Basement smells worse AFTER treating old dog pee spot with a Bissel scrubber. Help!

A while back, our dog peed on the carpet in our basement. We didn't notice it immediately, so it sat for a while.

Once we realized what happened, we tackled it with Folex and our upright Bissell rug scrubber several times. The machine pulled up a ton of dirt and muck, and the carpet fibers themselves look clean. After that, we applied Nature's Miracle Urine Destroyer, which successfully knocked out a lot of the actual urine odor. We are currently re-treating one small stubborn spot where the pee smell is lingering.

However, we now have a much bigger problem: the entire basement smells heavily like "dog" and bad odor. It is way worse than it was before we started cleaning, and it isn't getting better.

Short of ripping up the carpet and padding entirely, what are my options to get rid of this widespread, heavy dog odor?

Input on Latex Mattress Factory + TPS Quadcoil Build?

Here’s the DIY latex hybrid plan I’m currently leaning toward. Would love feedback on the overall construction/firmness.

I am 160lbs and sleep in all positions, including stomach frequently. My wife is 100lbs and sleeps in all positions, frequently on her side. We seem to like a relatively firm supportive layer with a soft top layer, with the Avocado Green Pillowtop being some inspiration.

Top to bottom:

  • Woolroom Deluxe Washable Wool Mattress Protector
    • Mainly for a little extra wool directly under us for temperature regulation and feel
  • 12” Bamboo/Wool Zippered Mattress Cover — Arizona Premium Mattress
  • 2” Soft Natural Talalay — Latex Mattress Factory
    • 19 ILD
  • 2” Medium Organic Dunlop — Latex Mattress Factory
    • 28 ILD
    • GOLS-certified organic
    • Considering whether to keep this medium across the whole mattress or potentially split the firmness for my wife’s side
  • 8” Texas Pocket Springs QuadCoils
    • 15.5 gauge with firm sides
  • Bed frame
    • Planning to replace the current slats with more closely spaced 3/4” plywood slats for solid support

I’ve also considered adding upholstery padding as a zoning option for my side to get more back support if needed, inspired by another post.

I’m currently planning to get both latex layers from Latex Mattress Factory. They seem to offer the best prices, firmness we need, plus the option for organic. We have looked closely at APM as well, but I’m leaning toward LMF right now.

All in this puts me right under $1500 for a queen.

I‘d love to know any thoughts or suggestions before pulling the trigger.

Avocado sales?

We are likely going to by an Avocado mattress. Between the Green firm or medium with a plush 2in topper. I was wondering when there might be some sales coming up? Is there some predicatibilty to them?

Avocado-like DIY mattress? Turmerry?

We’re looking at getting a new mattress— and have been mostly set on getting an Avocado Green. Likely their current medium (which apparently used to be their firm?), probably with a topper. We like the mattress, the materials, the organic nature of it. But as I’ve researched before pulling the trigger, I’m seeing info that they’ve changed materials (including the coil) and quality is less than it used to be.

Additional research led me to find Turmerry’s DIY offering, and additional research brought me here.

I’m interesting in trying to build a bed that is similar to the Avocado Green in medium—with a little more supportive/firm coils and more of a pillowtop like feel than their standard mattress. The natural organic materials are a plus.

But I have no idea where to start. Turmerry seems interesting but I’m not finding a lot of info about them. And there seem to be many many other options.

My wife is about 100#, mostly a side sleeper but who wants to sleep on her back more. I’m 160# and sleep all ways. Most often fall alsleep on stomach or side but find my best sleep is often on a supportive mattress on my back. And I sleep hot.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Avocado Green Medium vs Firm with a topper?

My wife and I are leaning toward an Avocado Green mattress. We‘re in our late 30s, healthy, relatively lightweight and sleep in all positions.

We‘ve been getting sore backs from our old mattress which is a 12-14 year old hybrid bed from a box store.

We want something relatively firm and supportive.

We were able to try out a Medium and a Pillowtop at a local store, as well as the 2in plush topper.

Initial impression is that my wife loved the pillowtop and I thought was it was comfortable but worried about long term support. The medium without topper could work for sure but my wife missed the feel of the topper.

We weren’t able to try a Firm but are considering buying a firm with a two inch topper, thinking it is best of both worlds—firm support but the plush feel for side sleeping.

The other option is the medium and buy the topper separately so that we can remove if we want as we get older and want something firmer or replace when it starts to wear out.

Or option 3 is just go with the standard medium.

Appreciate any insight! It’s my understanding that Avocado recently made changes to their line so we’re trying to make the most informed choice. It is a big purchase and we hope to have it last many years.

Timing Questions for first time Tenacity and Fall Seeding in 7a

Hi! I’m getting ready for my second fall seeding attempt. I’m in North Central WV in Zone 7a

Last year I did a pretty massive manual overhaul of my yard for the first time. Manually pulled a ton of crab grass—like half my yard. It ending up being almost a total restoration in those areas. Then I used the Groundskeeper rake, manually aerated and used a garden weasel. Planted Twin Cities Blue Resilience.

Overall it went decently well.

Then put down some preemergent that seems to mostly be working. And I’ve put down two applications for milorganite.

But I have not done any other weed control. I’m generally ok with some dandelions and clover in the yard and generally hesitant to use a ton of chemicals. However, I have a boat load of clover now. Way more than I want. So I’m planning to use some tenacity/meso before overseeding again at the end of the summer. I don’t need to get rid over every last weed, just a lot of it.

When should I try to first apply the tenacity? I was thinking very soon. Give it a couple weeks to work and then start getting ready to overseed in early September (rake, aerate and garden weasel again).

Should I also apply it when I seed? Do I need a surfactant now or when overseeding?

Is there anything else I should know that I may be overlooking?

Distraction Free Communication Device for ten year old

We are a pretty tech limited family. But it’s about time to consider a communication device for our 10 year old.

I’m looking for something that has no distractions whatsoever but can allow call and text, preferably with some GPS. Spotify could be useful too, though we don’t really need either. But no games, no internet, etc.

One option I’ve considered is just a Tracphone flip phone. A smart phone is definitely off limits

But watches may be an option. Contenders are Garmin Jr and Fitbit — but I think they have games that you can’t disable. Can anyone confirm?

An Apple Watch set up as a standalone device with the family control options is attractive because we are in the Apple ecosystem and there’s a little less “weird” stigma attached. But I don‘t know how good the set up for kids actually is.

And then there are Gabb and Cosmo devices designed for this kind of thing. Would love real world input on those.

Out of the Box Rust on Speed Queen Washer

I just had a new Speed Queen dropped off. after opening the box and opening the lid, I see some rust dripping into the tub. A bit ironic since we’re getting this new washer because our old one was getting rust on clothes. I‘m assuming this isn’t normal, is it?

Member’s Mark vs Monument Grill?

I’m looking to replace a 12 year old Charbroil grill we bought for like $200 from Lowe‘s. I’ve nursed it along with a few replacement parts, and was gifted some GrillGrates that brought some life back to it, but it’s officially done.

I’m been comparing a Monument (specifically the Monument 24367 Stainless steel 4 -Burner Liquid Propane Gas Grill 2 -Side Burner, that’s on Amazon for under $500 right now) with a Member’s Mark Pro Series Member’s Mark Pro Series 4-Burner (# 990450861) for $599.

I’ve been planning to get the Monument for a couple years now—but the build quality on the Member’s Mark seems excellent, even comparable to a Weber (that is out of price range for us).

I am mostly just grilling for our family, nothing crazy. I’d appreciate some input from the community here!

Speed Queen TC5 vs Maytag MVWP586GW

Our family of 5 is getting ready to replace an old Maytag washer. We inherited it from my grandparents 15 years ago. It's still running well but it's getting rust stain on clothes and can't figure out where it's coming from.

We're comparing the two washers in the title. The Maytag is attractive because the reviews I've seen are good and it's about $500 cheaper than the speed queen.

Hey everyone!

We desperately need to get into a dentist for or family — young kids, plus adults. We have been going to WVU, but got handed over to new hygeniest instead of the dental students we knew, and aren't a fan. Our kids were at Mace, which was amazing, but they don't take our insurance and it got to be unaffordable. We tried TLC for the kids and felt like they pushed a lot of stuff.

Any recommendations?
