How firm should a base innerspring layer be?

I’m a side sleeper. My plan is:
Base layer: 8 inch simple innerspring medium or medium-firm
Transition layer: 5cm high density polyurethane foam
Top: plush down / down alternative topper (I like the pillow top feel)

Not looking for specific recommendations because I don’t live in the US or any other country where you can easily get a lot of the well known brands. My basic question is what is ideal for my base layer? Should I stick with firm or medium?

Need help finding a mattress protector for a shallow pocket mattress (6")

I have a 6" thick queen size trifold mattress I need a mattress protector for. I have searched high and low for something online and can't find anything for 6". 8" is the thinnest I can find. I worry about the fabric bunching up if it's not tight enough for a thin mattress like mine. What would y'all use?

6 months of hell mattress shopping, a few weeks of mattress modding (finished product)

A few months ago, the mattress hunt broke me and I went a bit mad asking for help.

Out of like 150 posts there was this one guy who recommended building my own mattress, but he kind of got drowned out in a sea of noise. Buy as time goes by and I'm looking and researching and dying inside, I just say fuck it. Fuck the entire mattress industry. I'll do it. I'll build my own mattress, and if I build a bad one, I can at least sleep well on my hatred for all the fuckers who made this so difficult.

After a ton of research, I was prepared to really get into the nitty gritty of it all. I ordered coils because I sleep hot and have always slept on hybrids anyway, so I was relatively certain I wanted them in the final build. I then ordered 3 inches of firm dunlop, 3 inches of medium dunlop, and an inch of firm dunlop. Why this specific combination? Literally no specific reason. The plan was to play around with it, get a feel for it, and then use that information to go forward. I could mix in different materials once I knew what the base bed felt like.

!!! I finished off the process by ordering a 15 inch deep mattress encasement. But I had a specific reason for wanting this goal. My frame is flush with a 15" mattress. I wouldn't allow myself to consider it when mattress shopping, but if I am building this thing, I could put hdf under the coils to fill whatever height I am missing. If you are doing this, maybe hold on off on this? !!!

Anyway, I unwrapped the coils and laid them on the floor. Then I unwrapped the latex and began trying various patterns. Soft on medium on firm. Firm on medium on soft. A layer below the coils. A layer left out. And here's the thing that I am almost certain I am in the minority in thinking: Beaides a few distinct variations... everything just kind of felt fine. Slightly different, yes. But fine. So that's what I used and this is what I did:

I added slats that were 2 inches apart
1" firm dunlop latex (44 ILD) SoL
8" quad coils (15.5 gage) Pocket Spring
3" medium dunlop latex (30 ILD) SoL
3" soft dunlop latex (20 ILD) SoL
15" DIY stretch cover from Pocket Spring Store
(I also DIYed a bedjet to go along with this)
[(I'm quite proud of the little jet engine looking motherfucker] (https://imgur.com/a/19onptq)
And done.

And there you go. Is it overkill? I dunno, but its comfy. Can I even feel the coils under all that latex? I dunno, but it's comfy. Surely the latex under the coils a waste? I dunno, but I had it on hand and it saves me fom returning it and having to buy the HDF. And its comfy.

This mattress cost just under 2k and I am happy. I am finally happy.

Cool foam options

I'm working on getting my comfort layers sorted out and I feel like the firmness is good but it seems like it's warmer than I would have expected. Does anyone have suggestions for foam alternatives that might be cooler?

On top of the springs I have 2" of 35 ILD foam topped with 1" of 12 ILD foam (both from foam factory). I don't have a cover yet, I just put a light blanket down on top of the foam for the purposes of testing the build.

Talay Latex layer over existing eurotop pocket coil mattress?

My eventual goal is to build a DIY mattress as I can afford it.

Is it a good idea to purchase 2" talay layer first to perhaps improve my current setup? That way, I can add coils and mid layer later whilst potentially using this setup in the interim.

I am male, 180, 6' . Never actually knowingly slept on a latex, but there is a certain bouncy supportive feel I have come across at a couple hotels and came away with the best sleep ever. Based on the description of talay latex (or perhaps talay above dunlop), I assume that must have be the missing link as nothing at big box stores has felt remotely similar.

Anyone try a latex topper over eurotop pocket coil and came away with a halfway decent sleep?

TPS/3 inch Latex hybrid King or queen?

  • Hey guys I have been doing too much research on mattress this past month lol. What are your options on these final drafts? I'm leaning more towards the Split king because it can be modified for partners and if it just isn't a good config I can make the two twin xls into day beds. * My main concern doing a split is having all the layers just fly all around the place especially the split latex
  • However for the queen I have a frame, sheets , ready to go, but if it does not work it kind of is and SOL situation. * My main concern is that I am 6ft plus so not two partner friendly.
  • I'm thinking of 13 or 14 inch depth for both options for a chance to improve the build.
  • Thank you guys for all your help getting this far.

Input on Latex Mattress Factory + TPS Quadcoil Build?

Here’s the DIY latex hybrid plan I’m currently leaning toward. Would love feedback on the overall construction/firmness.

I am 160lbs and sleep in all positions, including stomach frequently. My wife is 100lbs and sleeps in all positions, frequently on her side. We seem to like a relatively firm supportive layer with a soft top layer, with the Avocado Green Pillowtop being some inspiration.

Top to bottom:

  • Woolroom Deluxe Washable Wool Mattress Protector
    • Mainly for a little extra wool directly under us for temperature regulation and feel
  • 12” Bamboo/Wool Zippered Mattress Cover — Arizona Premium Mattress
  • 2” Soft Natural Talalay — Latex Mattress Factory
    • 19 ILD
  • 2” Medium Organic Dunlop — Latex Mattress Factory
    • 28 ILD
    • GOLS-certified organic
    • Considering whether to keep this medium across the whole mattress or potentially split the firmness for my wife’s side
  • 8” Texas Pocket Springs QuadCoils
    • 15.5 gauge with firm sides
  • Bed frame
    • Planning to replace the current slats with more closely spaced 3/4” plywood slats for solid support

I’ve also considered adding upholstery padding as a zoning option for my side to get more back support if needed, inspired by another post.

I’m currently planning to get both latex layers from Latex Mattress Factory. They seem to offer the best prices, firmness we need, plus the option for organic. We have looked closely at APM as well, but I’m leaning toward LMF right now.

All in this puts me right under $1500 for a queen.

I‘d love to know any thoughts or suggestions before pulling the trigger.

Update on latex, wool toppers

I am a senior female light 56kg mostly side-sleeper with chronic insomnia and multiple health issues. I needed to improve the comfort of my Sealy Posturpedic Hotel flattop mattress as I was experiencing increasing pressure-point pain after weakening bone and muscle-loss.

I spent several weeks shop-testing various toppers, mattresses and combinations and have eventually found something that is very comfortable so I wanted to provide an update.

I settled on a 2” D65 Dunlop latex topper plus a lovely wool topper both enclosed in 100% cotton covers. I tried two 2” (4” total) latex which was far too soft and caused hammocking and my hips to sink too much creating more pain. So I tested just the one 2” and found that better. I also tried adding a 1” D75 latex layer underneath and that felt better still.

But then I decided to try something to give my hips just a little more cushioning. I cut a piece of latex to fit just under my hips to my knees and placed that underneath the 2” latex and then the wool topper. This gives me more support where I need it and allows my shoulders to be slightly lower for less pressure.

Having trialled it now for several weeks, I can say it has transformed my comfort level significantly.

I learned a lot during this research and trial period and wanted to express my thanks to everyone for your posts and advice. I highly recommend that you actually go to test in shops often and for as long as possible.

I really thought the plushest and thickest latex would be best but that was not the case for me. I think thinner layers are better and not plush or supersoft as you lose a lot of cushioning if you sink too much. I know plush/soft are mostly recommended for lightweight side-sleepers but it didn’t work out that way in my case. If a topper is too plush it may sink a little too much so it actually ends up feeling too firm from bottoming-out.

And the 1.5” wool topper adds a cool cloud-like comfort layer that I absolutely love. I also have 100% percale sheets. I have 2 great wool pillows and have made 2 latex low-profile latex pillows. I rotate and fluff my toppers every month. I also have a full length body pillow that also adds a great deal of comfort and helps with pressure pain too.

I have to say that I love laying in my bed now. It hasn’t miraculously cured my chronic health issues, but it has provided a much-needed level of comfort.

I really disliked all the memory foam toppers. However, I did find that the serene ILD22 foam toppers were very comfortable in combination with latex but decided the latex and wool was the better option for me.

As for Talalay, I found the soft talalay far tooo soft and preferred the 2“ or 3” MEDIUM Talalay which was more expensive than the Dunlop.

As for mattresses, I also found the mediums much more comfortable than the soft/plush. Next year, when I move I will replace my mattress with a med/firm hybrid flattop but will keep my toppers for comfort layers.

I wish everyone finds a solution that works well for your particular needs.

DIY Buy or Goodbye? Quadcoil minis on top of Quadcoils solely and in pain

Hey there all!

My partner (M) and I (F) are trying the DIY mattress build right now. We are both overweight, 30+ BMI 5'6. He carries his weight in his belly while mine is distributed. Our current configuration is (plus a small quilt cover) from bottom to top:

  1. 14.75 Quadcoil TPC
  2. 3" Quadcoil minis

With this configuration, my partner suffers from no support in his lower back - he's got a bubbly badonkadonk whereas I am more like chaps (ass-less). In this configuration, I can sleep on my back and my sides but I tend to wake up with stiff neck or regular neck pain regardless of my pillow set up; I am thinking possibly due to my body sinking but my upper chest/neck/head not (I have a smaller sized head).

We recently tried removing the Quadcoil minis. My partner still complained of no support in his lower back, and I woke up in excrutiating pain in my shoulder due to sleeping on my side on top of such firm coils.

We are trying again tonight to sleep on just the 14.75 TPC but I am curious if anyone has some insight into this problem or a possible solution. Some questions I have:

  1. Will adding a latex layer on top of the quadcoil minis help provide support for my partners lower back or alleviate my neck woes?
  2. Should there be a layer between the coils to add more rigidity? If you have a similar configuration, I'd love to hear about it!
  3. If you spoke to someone to help sort out your DIY build, who did you reach out? Thinking of calling some stores for assistance if we feel we need to buy a topper

Thank you for reading and your replies, in advance!

Fine-tuning comfort layer for side sleeping

I've been working on this bed now for awhile. I finally got the back pain fixed, and I am able to sleep heavy enough to dream again. But I wake up with sore arms so I think I need to soften the comfort layer more to allow my arms to sink some when I am side sleeping. Anybody have suggestions on what materials I could try?

Current build:

1" HyPURGel 15 ILD

2" 4lb ViscoPLUS Memory Foam 14 ILD

2" HD Medium F1828 28 ILD

8" TPS 15.5 QuadCoil Springs

1" 1830 HD Poly Foam on adjustable base

SleepyCat Ultima Natural Latex vs Hybrid Latex: these are literally for 2 different sleepers

I was comparing SleepyCat Ultima Natural Latex and Hybrid Latex thinking Ultima is basically the more premium version.

It is not.

These are genuinely for 2 completely different types of sleepers.

Ultima Natural Latex is medium-soft. It has a 1.5 inch certified natural latex layer on top, more cushioning, proper bounce and the cooling-focused cover.

This makes more sense for someone who sleeps on their side, changes positions a lot, sleeps hot or just hates getting stuck inside memory foam.

Hybrid Latex is properly firm. It has latex foam + AirGen memory foam over the firm 5-zone support layer. You stay more on top of it instead of sinking inside.

This makes much more sense for back/stomach sleepers, people coming from coir/cotton mattresses, or anyone who bought a soft mattress and now regrets it.

Honestly SleepyCat has done a good job making both products actually different instead of selling the same mattress with a few fancy layer names.

The only confusing part is the naming. People keep comparing them like one is better.

It is more like:

Ultima = comfort, cooling, pressure relief
Hybrid = firmness, support, less sink

Please don't write only "very comfortable" if you use either one 😭

Mention your weight, sleeping position, previous mattress and whatever you use AC. Otherwise mattress reviews are honestly useless.

First time DIY all latex, need some advice.

Hello community! Just learned about DIY mattresses and it seems amazing, but it is quite in depth so I'm hoping to get some help from the experts!

I am 5'8 and 160lbs, probably 50/50 back/side sleeper

Partner is 5'0 130lbs 70% back, 25% stomach, 5% side

Looking to build a King bed

We tested some beds from a company called Pranasleep that used Talalay and it was amazing, it was also almost $4k minimum. I was thinking 3" Talalay 14-19 ILD, 3" Talalay or Dunlop 28 ILD, and 3" Dunlop 34 ILD. This is all guesswork because I don't actually know the feeling of these ILDs but we are smaller people so I figured lower ILD?

also, people are saying you can make these mattresses so cheap but when I go to build one on Latex Mattress Factory it's nearly $1700 or so, which I'm fine paying that price for a mattress that should last a long time and is piecemeal repairable, but it seems like some people are building these way cheaper so I wonder if I'm missing something.

Any help is appreciated!

DIY Mattress Build - Does This Look Right?

Hey! I am looking to get a nice mattress but I don't want to spend 2-3k on getting a high end one. I really liked some of top-of-line tempurpedic and the firm purple ones (forgot the exact model though). I am 170lb, 5'11, and I sleep primarily on my side. I've done a bunch of research (aka with chat gpt and othe reddit threads) and I've created a build I think I can use to get close to the hugging/kinetic sand feeling that tempurpedic gives. I've never built a mattress before so I'd appreciate any help/guidance! Here is my build:

  • 3" 5-lb ViscoMAX - dense, slow pressure relief
  • 2" Poly Foam - softer transition
  • 2" HD36-HQ - firmer transition
  • 5" LUX-HQ - very firm support core

This is all from Foam Factory and I included a screenshot of the exact products I intend to buy. Any help is greatly appreciated! :)

Any suggestions for first time DIY build?

Im a 6'2" 180-190 back and side sleeper, and my partner is a 140 5'8" side sleeper. A big motivation of mine is maximizing breathability.

I'm planning on ordering the TPS kit in queen size:

15.5 8 inch coils

3 inch quad minis

2 inch soft sol latex

14 inch tps premium cover

Any suggestions or tips? I'm wondering if it will be too soft or if I should select a different cover size. Thanks in advance!

Sleep On Latex Dunlop Process

I'm looking to add 2" of Talalay latex to my mattress, but $275 is a lot.

2" of Sleep on Latex soft is $169. It's a lot more palatable, but I have a box of samples from SleepEZ and I don't like the feel of their soft Dunlop at ALL. I like soft talalay.

But I've heard SOL does something special with their Dunlop process that makes it feel more like talalay? Can anyone tell me what that feels like? More like talalay or dunlop? If I hate SleepEZs soft Dunlop will I still like SOL?
