FTTP connection without Router (Unifi UDR7)

Hi all, I'm currently on FTTC, and connect using a Draytek ADSL modem connected to the BT wall socket, into which I plug my Ubiquiti DR7 - which does the PPPoE connection/auth itself, so I don't have to use the broadband-provider-supplied router at all.

We have full fibre coming in the next few months, and I wanted to find out how it works for that - can I just plug the DR7 into the fibre wall socket and configure some auth and it'll all just work? Or will I need to use the broadband provider's router to do the connection?

Question on Fibre upgrade / switch process

Hoping somebody can give me some guidance (and piece of mind) regarding our impending switchover to fibre later this year.

We've had OpenReach in our village and they are planning the build out of the fibre infra to finally get us upgraded, with a view to connection being available towards the end of the year.

Does anyone know if it's possible to have an overlap between the existing internet service on our copper line, and the new fibre connection?

Reasons:

  • We probably want to keep our Landline, and since our current provider PlusNet don’t support VOIP/Landlines on Fibre with their equipment, we’ll likely have to switch to EE
  • I work from home, so having any period where I’m disconnected is likely to cause a significant problem

So I’m wondering if we’ll be able to:

  1. Get the fibre installed and up and running via EE
  2. Get our landline moved over to the new EE service
  3. Only at that point discontinue our existing broadband service with Plusnet

Is that possible? Anyone got any experience? I'm hoping that because the two systems are completely technically and physically distinct, it should be possible to have the old copper-based broadband continue for a week or two after the fibre is up and running, to give me a fallback in case of any issues.

If it’s going to be a straight switchover, then I might have to do something like rent a Starlink for 2-3 weeks to ensure we have a connection so I can continue to work until everything is up and running on the Fibre - because I don't trust OpenReach/EE/PlusNet not to screw it up and leave me without internet for a week.

I got burned when we moved into our current property - our connection was supposed to be enabled on completion day, but it actually took PlusNet 2 weeks to get us connected. Our village is a mobile blackspot, so there's no option of using 4G etc to connect, so the only practical option would be to rent Starlink - but obviously that would be a last resort.

Also, should I consider switching to EE now - i.e., move to SOGEA and get set up with a EE with a digital landline now, and then just flip to Fibre when it's available? Or is that going to cause unnecessary complications?

Any anecdotes, experience or insight that others can give on this would be appreciated.

Octopus API questions - missing data

Hoping there might be some smart techie people who can answer these two questions:

Missing Product in products endpoint

A lot of people who've been switched to the INTELLI-FIX-12M-26-03-23 tariff recently. However, when I hit the API to get the list of products ( https://api.octopus.energy/v1/products/ ) that tariff isn't included. Anyone know why that might be?

Account Details Show the Wrong Tariff

I've got at least one user using my app who is on theINTELLI-FIX-12M-26-03-23but when I call
https://api.octopus.energy/v1/accounts/{accountNumber} , the agreements object that's returned doesn't include that tariff in the agreement. Instead it's returning IOG-SMB-VAR-24-10-29 as the tariff code, but that's definitely not correct as that product no longer exists.

Anyone working with the API (or anyone from Octopus's tech dept) have any clue what's going on?

Display your BirdNet-Go detections on your Wordpress site - securely

https://preview.redd.it/7ztjxy9mrybh1.png?width=2304&format=png&auto=webp&s=e962eaa46ffc8c8a828a9426206a9a8ffce7c7a6

Slightly inspired by the amazing AvianFriends project, I decided it would be nice to share a list of birds detected in my garden on my village website which is built in Wordpress.

I didn't want to expose my local BirdNet-Go instance to the internet, so really needed a push method to provide semi-realtime updates of what birds are in the village, securely. So I wrote a little tool to query the BirdNet-Go API, and update a Wordpress post with the bird list, including uploading thumbnails for any new detections. I run the script every 15 minutes on my server, so the page is updated frequently with new detections through the day.

If you're interested in doing something similar, I open-sourced the tool here:

Birdnet-go permission errors

Hi, installed Birdnet-go on my synology NAS using docker, and so far it's working well. I'm using RTSP streams from 4 reolink cameras in my garden.

However, after running for about 6 hours I'm getting error notifications:

- api reported: failed to initialize secure filesystem: open /home/birdnet/.config/birdnet-go/hls: permission denied

- system-resource error in securefs: open /home/birdnet/.config/birdnet-go/hls: permission denied

I've tried googling but can't find anything obvious. The app continues to run, and is detecting birds just fine, so I'm not sure whether these errors are critical or not, or what the implications are for them.

Possibly related (or possibly not...) I can no longer listen to live audio through Birdnet-go. This worked when I first installed, but after a few hours doesn't work any more - I just get an error. I've tried restarting the container, but the error persists.

Any ideas? I can post my Docker-compose if it helps, but it's basically identical to the sample one on the Birdnet-go github page.

Edit: I got to the bottom of this - it was a bad path in my volume mapping and BirdNet config.

96Mhz mic suggestions for bat detection - wireless, wifi, streaming?

Hi all, I've been a keen Merlin fan for a few years, but my wife has always wondered if we could set up some kind of always-on solution, and somehow I only stumbled across BirdNet this week. So today I installed Birdnet-Go in docker on my Synology NAS, connected it to the 4 reolink cams in the garden, and boom - within about 15 mins I've got exactly what I want. Amazing! 2 hours later it's captured 21 species.... 😄

Thanks to the dev - it's much appreciated.

So, next steps.... I've installed the bat models, but unfortunately the webcam mics aren't up to the task, so I'm wondering if somebody can recommend a mic that is. What I'd really like is:

  • A mic with 96hz that can pick up bats
  • Water/weather proof (although if necessary I have places I can position it that would stay dry)
  • Can connect via wifi and present a stream that BirdNet-Go can use, so I don't need to hardwire it
  • For bonus points, either rechargeable battery with a decent life, or ideally solar-powered.

If the battery/solar options aren't easy (or cheap) then I can stick it on a USB cable if necessary.

I'm not looking to build/solder one - I'd just like something I can order online and set up quickly without any faff. Any suggestions? I'm in the SE of the UK if it makes a difference.

Blazor wasm component to display/browse server logs?

Hi all, I've written a pretty basic log viewer in an existing app, but wondered if anyone has a nice component or library to do this.

I'm using Serilog rolling log files on the server (it's a hosted Blazor wasm app), and would like a component that allows me to easily view, browse, and search for logs in the rolling logfiles, via the Blazor UI.

Anything good out there that does this already? I've not been able to find anything so far, but maybe my google-fu is letting me down.

Edit: doesn't seem like there's anything good out there, so I knocked up one of my own.

Some visitors to our wildlife pond

We moved into our house about 3.5 years ago. The existing pond was a huge big concrete koi pond built by the previous-but-one owner, but it was completely full with vegetation, and had steep sides and was completely unfriendly for wildlife. So we demolished that and rebuilt the pond to be larger, have only native plants, a nice beach area for wildlife to use, and we added a bog filter and stream. The garden is - as you'll see - quite wild and left to be mostly meadow (although we do have a formal vegetable garden too).

The pond's been a real success - the pond is really starting to settle in and we have a plethora of frogs, newts (including Great Crested), many species of dragonflies and damselflies. Lots of dead wood around the margins has helped, creating really good perches for anything that flies.

The birds absolutely love the pond and in the evenings often come down and visit to wash and preen - this video shows a very busy session with wagtails, starlings and various other small birds.

We also had our first deer in the garden in the last week or so - slightly mixed feelings about that with the veggie garden!! But lovely to see it munching on the buttercups. The deer makes an appearance at about 3'45".

We're in Surrey, in the SE of the UK.

Made breakfast for my 84yo neighbour

My next door neighbour mentioned that she hadn't had a cooked breakfast for years, so I invited her and her friend round for a fryup. Yum.

When do events turn up via the HA API?

So I got an email today about my first event that's happening tomorrow (20:30 - 21:30, export).

However, the event isn't showing up in the API - so it's not appearing in my HA sensor either.

Is there some sort of lag between the email notification and the event appearing in HA? Does the event only appear in the sensor within 24 hours of its scheduled time, or something else?

Just trying to figure out what to expect.

Sample events?

Hi all, I'm just getting up to speed on Axle energy, and adding support to it for the app I built to control my Solis inverter (you can try it here if you have Solis).

I only signed up today and haven't had any events yet, so as I build the logic to react to events and have my app discharge in response to them, I'd like some test data. Can anyone give me a screenshot or list (perhaps from HomeAssistant?) of events they've received in the past?

Mainly I want to see what the times are - do they always fall into the same half-hour slots that Octopus uses, or can they span longer times and start/end at any arbitrary time.

Thanks!

▲ 0 r/waze

Hi all, I started using Waze a couple of weeks ago, but cannot get the sound to work *at all*. It's driving me crazy.

Phone: Galaxy S24 using a magnetic wireless charger dash mount

Car: 2012 Audi A6 Allroad

I've tried *everything* I can think of.

- Connected to the car Bluetooth

- Not connected

- Connected as hands free

- Connected as carphone (which uses remote SIM mode but isn't so great because that leaves Waze with no Internet connection)

- "Play sound to phone speaker" on and off

- All 3 audio settings

- Phone notification and system volume up full

I've never heard a peep out of Waze. No audible alerts for roadworks, during navigation, or for speed limits.

Any clues as to how to fix? It's doing my nut in. 😁

Triple tattie excellence as always. Chips slightly underdone but I know everyone loses their mind at chips on a fry in this sub, so that's probably moot.

Now planning my sleep coma for the rest of the day.

Been getting Skyhook failures when I search in Sonarr for the last 3-4 days. Not seeing loads of "skyhook is down" posts, so presuming it's localised (or just me).

Any suggestions to debug/diagnose/fix? It was working fine until the middle of last week. I'm running 4.0.17.2952 if it makes any difference.

Anyone got any recommendations for any Magsafe-compatible cases (ideally black) for an S24. This isn't for an ultra or a plus. The only ones I can really find are the JETech ones on Amazon, and they appear to have the magsafe ring in the wrong place, so the phone doesn't charge.

Alternatively, are there any S25 Magsafe cases that would fit the S24?

Thanks!

EDIT: Found a solution which works - see my comment below.
