Luz and The Dud…

Just curious as I have only seen the series and not read the book. Did Luz really have two close calls in the space (my estimation) of about five minutes? Doesn’t get to Muck and Penkala’s (hope I have the spelling right) hole, and then—against all odds—a dud shell lands in the next foxhole he finds. Talk about luck being on your side…that scene has always stood out for me.

Also…does anyone know the statistical probability of that dud shell? My guess is that anyone who survives due to a dud shell is astronomically lucky.

Recording Time For GoPro Cameras

Hello. I hope I am in the right place. Please bear in mind I’m learning the subject matter, so be kind.

I want to do some vlogging and noticed some long form YouTubers are using GoPro cameras. Are GP cams a good option for recording for long periods of time? Or do they record in short increments? A recent dash cam I tried out recorded files in ten minute increments, and I’m hoping to avoid that.

I’m looking at a Hero 12 and am trying to find out the max recording times for various settings and SD cards. Any help would be greatly appreciated…thank you in advance!

Most Bizarre Examples of “Happy” Endings After Tragedy (Spoiler)

Prime example: Independence Day. World gets annihilated; many of the planet’s cities are destroyed….hundreds of millions dead;
and the president’s wife dies. Yet at the end, they are puffing on cigars, all smiles and the president’s daughter says “Happy Fourth of July, Daddy”, and so now it’s time to party!

Minimum Bortle For Milky Way?

Need to get out of my Bortle 8 to have a chance to image the MW. Tried to image from the B8 once with my S 30 Pro. Two words: No Chance.

I live about an hour from B5 and two from B4. Will either work?

Backup Cell Phone

I have two devices: an iPhone 16 which replaced my iPhone 12. I still have the 12 and it still works, but not for calls. I use it for photos, music, etc.

What would be the LEAST expensive way to reactivate that phone and assign a new number? By “way” I mean carriers, plans, monthly costs, etc. I’m currently with Verizon for my main phone.

Thank you in advance!

Title Card Background

What is up with OpenShot’s titles? Adding titles was easy, but in the latest edition, it has a checkerboard default which I can’t change. Sorry if this has been addressed. Haven’t used OS in a while, so this has been a surprise.

Any suggestions?

Good Dash Cam for long form recording?

Non-expert here. Want to record video for longer rides. Is there a recommended cam that will just create a start to finish file? Or are all cams on a loop ( just got one that loops each ten minutes: Rove R2-4k Dual)

Again, non-expert, so thanks in advance.

ABC Radio News…

Been a little under a month since CBS Radio News signed off. Since it’s the only game in town, (at least for terrestrial where I live) been listening to ABC Radio TOH news. No disrespect here—it’s a very good operation and I’m glad it’s available (Cheri Preston, for example, is a great anchor)—but still think CBS Radio was the class of network radio news.

Its absence is noticeable.

Dust Mote Issue

Just took delivery of my S 30 Pro…and am disappointed. Right out of the box, there appears to be a dust mote (I’ve seen enough to have a pretty good idea that’s it) appearing on all of the images so far. Been trying to post an image but Reddit is preventing me from doing so (getting a message about setting a required flair…been trying but still can’t upload).

Yes, I could process them out, but that shouldn’t have to be done. Hoping it’s not on the sensor…I wish to avoid having to return.

Any advice is appreciated, and apologies for lack of a pic. I’ve posted images before, but can’t right now.

Another Flip To ABC

This is from Sirius/XM’s POTUS Channel. Flipped from CBS to ABC at 6 ET.

Per another thread…the number of stations taking the final CBS casts must be at a bare minimum.

How Fast Would An Indycar Safely Go Without Restrictions at IMS?

No rules, no restrictions. Just build a car and try to go as fast as you can. What would the top speed be to be able to safely turn a lap at IMS?

Don’t Get Seestar Critics

Hope this thread doesn’t get tossed by the mods. Not trying to be controversial, just looking for insights. Also, if the topic has been over discussed already, I apologize.

Personally, I have an S 50 and think it’s great (I’m also waiting on an S 30 Pro). I’ve seen numerous YouTubers (Trevor Jones, Cuiv, etc) review Seestars (and Dwarfs) and they all have welcomed the arrival of the smartscopes.

So here goes: I was on another AP sub and encountered quite a bit of antagonism toward the Seestar and smartscopes in general. Lots of “it’s not real AP” or “it’s only real if you do the work”, etc. My question is: what drives this sentiment?

Personally, I find little difference between the Seestar and when I use my traditional rigs. With both I set up, choose a target, polar align and then run the plan, one with the Seestar app and one with the ASIAir app. I fact, I think my dedicated astrocam may have the same sensor as the S 50, so isn’t this basically two different methods of doing the same thing: imaging the night sky?

All opinions are welcome and I thank you in advance.

CBS Radio News Replacements?

Just curious…have many CBS Radio News affiliates publicly announced what they are going to do after May 22? Been perusing online and the closest I could find was a story about two weeks ago stating some of the major market stations were still in the decision making process.

Right now it seems the only way to find out is to wait until the first hour after the final CBS newscast airs next week.
