Walking every day has improved my discipline
I've lacked discipline my whole life, from procrastinating assignments past EXTENDED deadlines in K-12 to succumbing to excessive drinking and unhealthy eating in adulthood. I'd have a few days of being disciplined here and there before falling back into old ways, which never felt good. I'm pretty sure I have undiagnosed ADHD but oh well, I'm not much of a fan of being medicated for life.
For the past several months I've been out of work while taking care of a family member and recovering from an injury. My unhealthy, undisciplined lifestyle unsurprisingly led to weight gain. I will be turning 30 in December and decided that enough is enough, it's time to be a big boy (in the other sense of the word), so I started walking.
I've gone on many trails for the first time and I walk the local track with the goal of 10k steps a day, which isn't much to some but it's what I am able to do consistently, and that's what matters. Getting out of bed when I wanted to sleep in was hard, and still is at times, but the feeling of accomplishment and other good feelings that come from walking CONSISTENTLY has given me the motivation that I'd lacked for so long without relying on alcohol and other forms of instant gratification; it's too good not to do it. I realized that setting too many / unrealistic goals has only ever set myself up for failure and disappointment. If I can get 10k steps a day, I can achieve other things that I want. Little goals met really do compound and give you the fuel to accomplish more. I've since kicked the bottle and have been eating how God intended, for the longest time in my life. I feel great physically, emotionally, and mentally, like I've unlocked a new level, and I will only level up from here. I'm now training to run my first 5k, and that in itself is something I would've never imagined, coming from someone who could never run for more than a minute.
It takes discipline to budget your money, and that gives you the FREEDOM to spend it how you want without going broke. The same principle applies to every other area of life: discipline gives you the freedom to live on your own terms, rather than being controlled by the consequences of short-term indulgence.
Discipline = Freedom
"The curse of discipline is that every day looks the same. The curse of indiscipline is that every year does."
