Two-month stay in Southampton: Winchester or Sholing?

Hi everyone! I’ll soon be doing a two-month research placement at the University of Southampton. Since I’ll only be there for a short period, I’m currently choosing between two rooms:

A) Winchester

  • 1st month: £650
  • 2nd month: £650
  • Deposit: £650 (but this may be reduced)
  • Transport: £117 (monthly Solent GO)
  • Average journey to campus: ~ 65 mins

B) Sholing

  • 1st month: £700
  • 2nd month: £700
  • Deposit: £350
  • Transport: £56 (monthly Bluestar SOU Region)
  • Average journey to campus: ~ 55 mins

To be honest, I prefer the house in Winchester, and I feel I’d probably get along better with the people there. In the Sholing house, the other tenants are a bit older, and I’m worried I might not fit in as well. On the other hand, the commute from Sholing (to Uni) would be slightly a little bit easier. Also, Southampton has more options for stores and things to do...

What do you guys think?

SOLENT GO: Great deal or am I missing something?

Hi, guys! A few days ago I posted about whether it was doable to live in Winchester while working/studying in Southampton. My biggest issue would be the cost, not so much the time spent on travelling between the two cities. Firstly, I thought I would need to pay for both Bluestar and Stagecoach subscriptions, but a friend of mine told me about the Solent GO. With this, I would be able to travel as many times as I want within the two cities and between them. However, it sounds too good to be true. Is this a really great deal, or am I missing something? Because the monthly subscription of Solent GO goes for 117 pounds, while Bluestar + Stagecoach would reach almost 200 pounds. Thanks!

Living in Winchester while working/studying in Southampton?

Does anyone here live in Winchester and work/study in Southampton? Could you tell me if it's a reasonable routine?

I'll be doing a two-month internship at the University of Southampton. Because of the short period I'll be staying, I haven't been able to find any room rentals in the city (aside from the unsanitary ones and the ones that tried to scam me). However, I found a great option in Winchester. I'm considering going ahead with a rental agreement there, since the rent is significantly lower than what's charged in Southampton.

One important detail: I won't need to go to the university every day — maybe once or twice a week. I also know there's a monthly Bluestar bus pass that lets you ride as many times as you want, right?

What do you all think about this situation?

Vocês receberam aditivo da FAPESP?

Oi, pessoal!

How do you guys organize your Todoist setup?

Hi, guys! I'm kind of new to Todoist, and for the past few months, I was trying some different setups, but none of them worked for me. So, I decided to start my own 'system,' but I have zero experience with to-do apps. So, I was hoping to get some inspirations. Then: How do you guys organize your Todoist setup? Regarding projects, tags, filters and flags. Thanks!

Thoughts on Carl Pullein's Time Sector System

Hi, guys. I'm struggling to keeping up with my to-do list. I don't think it's a matter of time, but of method and organization. Then I realized I never tried Pullein's Time Sector System. However, since it's so... unconventional (If I can use that word), I would like to ask If anyone has adopted it and what are your thoughts on it. Thanks!

Qual currículo conta mais para a FAPESP?

Oi, pessoal! Vocês saberiam me dizer?

Inverter Banco Scott com Rosca na polia?

Fala, pessoal!

Push:

4/14-12-10-10 Rosca com halteres no banco inclinado;

4/14-12-10-10 Banco Scott;

Upper:

4/14-12-10-10 Rosca direta na polia;

Valeu!

Looking for short-term accommodation in Southampton (Sept–Oct) – any advice?

Hi everyone!

I'm a Brazilian Master's student, and I'll be visiting the University of Southampton as a research intern from 1 September to 31 October. I'm really looking forward to spending a couple of months in the UK, but I'm currently trying to sort out accommodation.

I'm looking for a room (ideally in a shared house/flat) for those two months, preferably somewhere with good transport links to the university. My budget is around £750.

I've already had a look at SpareRoom but didn't find much for now—don't know If it's too soon to be searching for that. So I was wondering if there are any other websites, letting agencies, Facebook groups, or platforms that are worth checking out for short-term rentals.

I'd also really appreciate any advice about the renting process in the UK. For example:

  • Are there any agencies that are particularly good (or ones I should avoid)?
  • Is it common for landlords to accept tenants staying for only two months?
  • Are there any scams or red flags I should watch out for?
  • Anything else you think would be useful for someone renting in the UK for the first time!

A bit about me: I'm 24, tidy, quiet, non-smoker, and I'll mostly be spending my time at the university or working on my research. I'm very respectful of shared spaces and always clean up after myself. I'm not planning on hosting parties or anything like that—I just need a comfortable place to stay—well, sleep and eat—while I'm there.

Any recommendations or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Best!

Enfim, nada me surpreende nesse mundinho acadêmico dos infernos.

Best browser for academic work?

Hi, everyone, how's it going? I'm looking for recommendations on the best browser for academic work. Basically, I deal with a lot of tabs, including google documents, PDFs, journals, e-mails, writing, and things that I need to read/check later. I'm currently using Chrome. I don't have any issues with RAM or performance, but the high number of open tabs got me lost every time. I tried Zen browser a few months ago, but the performance was terrible and the RAM eating was way worse than Chrome — I know, don't ask me. So what would you suggest for me? Thanks!

Fala, galera, tudo bem?

Harding (Nature's font) alternative

Hi guys! I'm looking for an alternative for Nature's Harding. I've been reading a lot of their papers and really like how their typeface looks - and feel. I didn't find a way to download it to use to type my notes on Obsidian. I already saw I post about Harding's alternative, but didn't like them. So, does anyone knows an alternative - or even a way to download it? Thanks!

How do you organize your reading list and literature notes?

Hey everyone! I started my PhD three months ago in Arts Studies, and I've been having a hard time keeping up with all the reading. One thing I'm really missing is a good way to keep track of what I've already read and what I still need (or want) to read.

During my master's, I used Obsidian to take notes because I convinced myself that the linking feature would be a game changer. In the end, though, I barely used it. Last year they introduced the database feature, but I find it kind of awkward and clunky to use. I also (tried to) used Obsidian to track my readings, but I felt so lost.

So I wanted to ask: how do you take reading notes? And how do you organize your reading list? I've seen some people use Excel for their literature notes (which seems to work better for STEM, but I'm in the humanities), while others keep all their notes in a single Word document.

Anyway, what do you recommend? Specially regarding literature notes. Thanks!!
