Basilisk worth it!

Basilisk worth it!

Curious what other 11th exp you guys have had with it.

Maybe not a top pick but for just 115 points I think the basilisk is worth it for what it does. The -2" to move characteristic and charges came in clutch for me twice today. It's fairly easy to get it into a position to draw a bead on enemy units for a regular BS shot but even with indirect you just need to score one hit for the effect to go off. That special ability is easily a 2cp stratagem and I would say worth it's points in a lot of instances.

I also tried a manticore. Whereas I think the ability is decent it's pretty pricey. I could see holding it back but keeping LOS on your objectives for direct fire when the time comes. Reducing enemy OC will help with Take and Hold a bit. It's a bummer though that it can't zero out OC.

The Hearts Penitent

I'm painting a Mesoamerican-themed custom chapter. I'm almost finished so I thought I should start nailing down the lore. Let me know if it sounds good or if there are any areas I should flesh out.

\------

The Hearts Penitent are a grim and secretive chapter of Adeptus Astartes whose fortress-monastery is located on the jungle world of Tlaxcal. Clad in distinctive teal and crimson armor, their heraldry depicts a bleeding heart held aloft in a sacrificial gesture—a symbol of their fanatical devotion and determination. Created during one of the Imperium’s obscure foundings, their origins are rumored to be deliberately concealed or simply unknown.

The chapter itself neither confirms nor denies such speculation. To the Hearts Penitent, geneseed matters less than their unending sacrifices to the Emperor and the ancestral bloodlines of their homeworld. Though there is much about the Hearts Penitent that would place them under imperial scrutiny, the chapter’s effectiveness has granted them relatively laissez faire treatment from the Imperium.

Tlaxcal is a jungle world of colossal rainforests, volcanic highlands, and ancient ruins older than Imperial records. Vast stepped pyramids rise above choking jungle canopies, built by ancient civilizations whose glyphs still adorn the armor and weapons of the chapter. The Tlaxcal system is populated by a confederacy of independent city-states. The ruling warrior castes sponsor and wage ritualized wars beneath the gaze of twin suns. From these conflicts, the Hearts Penitent draw new aspirants.

Recruitment is brutal even by Astartes standards. Victors from the sacred combat are taken to the fortress-monastery known as the Temple of the Last Dawn, where they undergo the Rite of the Burning Heart. Aspirants are required to fast for seven days while ascending the monastery’s immense basalt causeways. Many perish from hunger, heat, or wounds they had sustained from the previous ritual combat. Those who survive the ordeal are implanted with gene-seed and indoctrinated into the chapter’s creed: Only through sacrifice may humanity prove worthy of survival.

The Hearts Penitent maintain practices considered unsettling by other Imperial forces. Before battle, Chaplains known as Tlamacazqui carve ritual scars into their brothers’ armor and flesh. These wounds are believed to “open the heart” to the Emperor’s judgment. Veteran Space Marines often wear helmets stylized according to the city-state from which they originated.

The Hearts Penitent view battle as an extended sacrificial ritual wherein they make offerings to the Emperor with the blood of their enemies. Prisoners are rarely taken, as doing so would be viewed as denying the Emperor his due. In combat, the chapter makes use of terror tactics with various types of assault weaponry that has been heavily augmented with materials from the planet’s volcanic features. Infiltration units skirt the edges of the battlefield, sowing confusion and performing disruption operations. Heavily armored Gravis Marines march steadily on to the sound of their ancestral war drums beating in their internal vox systems. Librarians—known within the chapter as Seers of Ash—occupy an uneasy role. Psychic ability is viewed as both sacred and cursed, and many Seers ritualistically blind themselves after experiencing apocalyptic visions of the Last Dawn.

The Hearts Penitent possess an unusually high resistance to pain and psychological corruption. Apothecaries have documented strange reactions within the Chapter’s gene-seed: accelerated scar tissue growth, heightened adrenal response, and episodes of violent religious fervor. Whether these traits originate from their progenitor lineage or centuries of conditioning remains unknown.

During the Gothic War, the Hearts Penitent exterminated over four billion Imperial citizens after declaring one of the system's shrine worlds spiritually compromised by hidden heresy. Though later investigations found evidence of Chaos corruption among the ruling clergy, the sheer scale of slaughter horrified nearby sectors. Since then, the Chapter has carried a reputation for merciless absolutism.

This reputation only deepened during the opening years of the Cicatrix Maledictum (the Great Rift). Cut off from Terra and surrounded by daemonic incursions, the Hearts Penitent enacted what they called the Rite of Flame, sacrificing entire populations to deny worlds to the servants of Chaos. Some Imperial commanders condemned the acts as monstrous; others quietly admitted the strategy saved subsectors from annihilation.

The chapter has now joined the conflict on Armageddon. They leave burning ruins, silent battlefields, and mountains of dead in their wake. To the faithful, they are angels of judgment. To all others, they are a grim reminder: there will be sacrifice.
