I'm honestly exhausted and depressed from job searching. If anyone knows of openings, I'd be incredibly grateful

Hey everyone,

I hate to sound too desperate, but I'm at the point where I could really use some help.

I'm projected to finish my M.S. in Data Science next week and have over five years of healthcare experience as a pharmacy technician. I've been working hard to transition into data analytics by building projects with SQL, Tableau, Python, R, and Excel, refining my resume, networking on LinkedIn, and applying to what feels like hundreds of jobs.

I also have what I believe is a solid portfolio of healthcare analytics projects that showcases my SQL, Tableau, Python, Excel, and data visualization skills, so I genuinely feel like I've put in the work to prepare myself. Despite that, I'm still struggling to get my foot in the door.

To be honest, one of the hardest parts isn't even the applications anymore. It's going home every day and having my family constantly ask why I still haven't found a job. I know they're worried about me and want me to succeed, but after spending hours tailoring resumes, applying, networking, and preparing for interviews, it's mentally draining to feel like I'm constantly being reminded that I haven't made it yet.

I'm primarily interested in Research Data Analyst, Healthcare Data Analyst, Business Intelligence Analyst, Clinical Data Analyst, Population Health Analyst, Quality Improvement Analyst, Reporting Analyst, and healthcare IT roles. I've also started looking into Epic Analyst, Epic Applications Analyst, and Epic Reporting Analyst positions because I believe my healthcare background would translate well, even though I don't have direct Epic experience yet.

If anyone here works in healthcare, healthcare IT, health insurance, life sciences, biotech, pharmaceuticals, or another industry that hires data analysts, I'd be incredibly grateful for the opportunity to connect. If you know of any openings that align with my background, I'd love the chance to chat. And if, after getting to know me and reviewing my experience, you'd feel comfortable referring me, it would truly mean the world to me. I also live in Sacramento, California and open to remote roles as well.

I'm happy to share my resume, portfolio, GitHub, and LinkedIn with anyone who's interested.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I know everyone is busy, but I'm determined to keep going. I truly appreciate any advice, conversations, referrals, or leads.

Looking for advice from Epic Analysts: Is my background enough?

Hi everyone! I'm interested in pursuing an Epic Analyst role at Sutter Health and would love to hear from current or former Epic Analysts.

I'd appreciate hearing about:
What module you support (Willow, Ambulatory, Cogito, etc.)

What your day-to-day work looks like

What skills have been most valuable in your role

What you enjoy most (and least) about the job

Any advice for someone trying to break into an Epic Analyst position

For context, I have a bachelor's degree in Biology, I'm finishing my Master's in Data Science next week, have 5 years of pharmacy technician experience, and have built a data analytics portfolio. I'm hoping to combine my healthcare background with data and technology.

If you'd rather not share publicly, feel free to DM me. I’d really appreciate the opportunity to learn more about your experience. Thanks in advance!

Transitioning into healthcare analytics/data roles — would appreciate any insights

Hi everyone,

I’m actively transitioning from healthcare into data/healthcare analytics roles and trying to get a realistic understanding of what actually makes candidates successful in this space.

I have 5 years of experience as a pharmacy technician in retail and long-term care, where I worked closely with medication workflows, operations, and healthcare systems. I’ve also been building a portfolio using SQL, Tableau, R, and Excel, focused on healthcare and public health datasets.

Right now, I’m applying to roles in:

  • State/public health agencies in California
  • Healthcare systems like Sutter and Kaiser
  • Entry/mid-level healthcare analytics positions

Despite this, I’ve been running into repeated rejections at the application stage, so I’m trying to figure out what’s not translating on paper.

I’d really value honest input on:

  • What actually separates candidates who get interviews from those who don’t
  • Whether portfolio work is enough, or if I’m missing something critical
  • How people with non-traditional backgrounds successfully break into healthcare analytics

If anyone has gone through a similar transition or works in this space, I’d genuinely appreciate hearing how you navigated it.

(Feel free to message me directly if that’s easier.)

Interested in Public Health Analytics and Research Careers – Would Love Your Insights

Hi everyone,

I’m currently exploring career opportunities in public health, healthcare analytics, health informatics, and research-related roles, and I wanted to hear from people working in these fields.

I have a background as a pharmacy technician and I’m finishing my Master’s in Data Science, so I’m interested in roles that combine healthcare and data. I’d love to learn more about how people got started in public health careers, what their day-to-day work looks like, and what skills or experiences have been most valuable for career growth.

For those working in public health agencies, healthcare organizations, or health research, what advice would you give to someone trying to break into the field? Are there particular roles, certifications, or experiences that helped you get your foot in the door?

The job market has been pretty challenging lately, so I’m also hoping to connect with others in the field, learn from your experiences, and build relationships with people who share similar interests.

I’d really appreciate any insights or advice. Thanks!

Analyst II Roles

Hey Everyone,

Thank you for all the really helpful advice on my previous post. I wanted to ask another question as I’m getting closer to finishing school.

I’ll be graduating with my MS in Data Science this summer, and I also have about 5 years of experience working as a pharmacy tech in healthcare and I have been practicing my skills in SQL, R, Excel, Tableau and Python and already have a solid portfolio.

Recently I’ve been looking at Analyst II since these are the most common roles available and focusing on DHCS, CDPH, and other health-focused state agencies around Sacramento, and I was wondering how realistic it is for someone with my background to land an Analyst II role directly as someone new to state. Or do most people usually start at Analyst I first even with a master’s degree?

I’d also be interested in hearing:

  • what skills you use the most day-to-day
  • whether healthcare/pharmacy experience and having an advanced degree is actually helpful
  • and if external applicants ever get hired straight into Analyst II roles

Just trying to learn more about the career path from people already working in the Analyst II classification. Appreciate any insight!

Breaking into Data Analytics from Healthcare (Pharmacy Tech + MS Data Science)

Hey everyone,

I wanted to put myself out there and connect with people working in analytics, healthcare, biotech, or related fields.

A little about me:

I have a Bachelor's in Biology, I'm currently working on my Master's in Data Science, and I've spent the last 5 years working as a pharmacy technician. Through that experience, I've worked with healthcare data, insurance issues, medication workflows, compliance requirements, and a lot of problem-solving in fast-paced environments.
I'm now looking to transition into a Data Analyst role and would love to learn from people already in the field. I'm based in Sacramento, but I'm open to opportunities throughout California and remote roles as well. I have also created a decent portfolio showcasing my skills in Tableau, Excel, SQL, and R with healthcare datasets.

I'm especially interested in healthcare, public health, biotech, pharmacy, and business analytics. Companies and organizations that interest me include CDPH, DHCS, UC Davis Health, Sutter Health, Kaiser Permanente, Blue Shield of California, Genentech, Gilead, Amgen, Illumina, and similar healthcare or biotech organizations.

Right now, I'm continuing to build my skills in SQL, Python, statistics, and data visualization while completing my degree.

If anyone has advice on:

- Breaking into analytics from healthcare
- Sacramento-area opportunities
- Healthcare or biotech analytics roles
- Skills/projects that helped you land your first analyst job
- Companies that are hiring

I'd love to hear your experience.

Also, I'm happy to share my resume if anyone wants to take a look or provide feedback. And if you're currently working at a company that's hiring (or know a hiring manager who might be open to referrals), I'd be extremely grateful for any connections or introductions.

Thanks in advance!

Breaking into Healthcare Data Analytics

Hey everyone,

I’m currently trying to break into healthcare data analytics and wanted to put myself out there to connect with people already working in the field. I recently graduated and I’m currently finishing up my Master’s in Data Science. I also have 5 years of experience working as a pharmacy tech, so a lot of my background has been in healthcare operations, along with skills in SQL, Excel, reporting, and data analysis.

Lately I’ve been applying to analyst roles at places like Molina Healthcare, Kaiser Permanente, Sutter Health, Centene, and also California state Research Data Analyst positions.

Job searching has honestly been pretty tough lately, so I’m hoping to network a bit, learn from people already in the industry, and hear about how others got their foot in the door. If anyone has advice, insights about their company or team, or is open to connecting, I’d really appreciate it.

And if your company happens to be hiring entry-level or junior analysts, I’d definitely be interested in learning more. Appreciate any guidance or referrals people are willing to share.

Thanks!

Hello everyone,

I am actively applying for roles with the state, primarily Research Data Analyst I and Analyst I roles with DHCS, CDPH, and Covered California. I have a bachelors degree in biology and currently finishing up a masters in data science this summer and have 5 years of experience in healthcare as a pharmacy tech. I have already built a solid portfolio with the data tools I learned from my masters program utilizing real-world healthcare datasets showcasing my skills in SQL, Tableau and Excel. Does anyone know if I have a solid shot in landing an interview based on my background? Also provide me any helpful advice and insights to get my foot through the door?

After taking the Research Data Analyst I and the Analyst I examination, I am ranked number 3. Can anyone clarify if it is only ranks 1 or 2 that are top priority or is it that all top three ranks are reachable regardless of exam score and the hiring team will heavily look at the application package, resume and the SOQ?

Thank you guys in advance!
