music is weird... (psychiatric explorations)

As most of y'all probably know Psychiatric Explorations of the Fetus with Needles came out in 1995, and I became a Flaming Lips fan in 1999 or so, so I’ve been hearing it for over 25 years. It’s on one of my favorite albums, so I’ve heard it a thousand times.

But whenever I’d try to play it, or my old band would try to cover it, I could never figure out the timing of the intro. I thought it was just kind of like they were randomly floating around and knew to come in off of some cue or something. But then I was watching some old live version of it, and I immediately realized I had been hearing the intro “wrong” this whole time

What I thought was the 1 is not the 1 at all. It’s the “and” of 4. And two things happened: 1) the timing of the intro makes perfect sense now, and 2) no matter what I do, I cannot hear it the way I used to. Like, once I realized how it actually counted, I can’t go back. Even though it’s the exact same audio, obviously, it sounds completely different....

The latest shuffling of the board... really digging it!

Covers a lot of ground but can also get weird. The newest ones are the Duellist and the BeeBeeDee. The Duellist took me a little time to get dialed in because of all the different options, including the dip switches on the side, but it sounds great. And the BeeBeeDee sounds amazing and is much easier to wrap my head around than other offerings from Beetronics. Thoughts?

Mid-90s McCarty pickup rings stock?

I recently got this guitar and I love it, but I'm wondering if these are the stock pick up rings? Most dual bucker guitars I've seen like this have the thinner neck ring, but on this one both neck and bridge are the same thickness. Normal? Thanks!

Recommendations / experiences with good amp repair in South Austin?

Thanks to everyone for the guitar repair advice last week - I got it sorted! Now a couple amps are giving me trouble. I'm disabled and can't drive so I'm looking for a spot that's not too far from South Austin (South Congress / Stassney area) to keep Uber costs down. I'm familiar with South Austin Music but want to explore other options too! These are tube amps (a Carr Telstar and a Savage Macht 12).

Cheers!

SOTB: Single-button simplicity!

Put this together to be a good all-around board for playing live or at jams. A lot of my pedals have two buttons, but sometimes when I'm playing live I find it hard to step on the correct one. For this one I wanted to make them all pretty easy to hit. So I forced myself to stick to single button pedals and even put the Mooer button toppers on them for larger targets. When you're a klutz like me you can take all the help you can get....

Which Paul McCartney album do you think is overrated?

I've always seen Tug of War being regarded as one of Paul's greatest solo albums, but I've never really agreed with that view. To me, it's a somewhat overrated record.

There are some absolutely fantastic songs on it, such as "Here Today", "Ebony and Ivory", and the title track "Tug of War". However, the rest of the album, while not bad by any means, feels rather forgettable to me.

I made a little site to make searching GC's used inventory easier...

I have always liked searching GC's used section for cool items and deals, but found the interface clunky. I built this tool for my own use, but thought others may find it useful. I have shared it around and gotten some good feedback on it. It's free to use, no ads, and I don't collect or sell your data. I don't make money off the site, though at some point I may explore using affiliate links or something.

You can use it as a guest or create an account to save / watch items, save searches, set favorite stores, etc. Check it out! Feedback welcome (though before you ask, I don't currently have the ability to set up e-mail / text alerts for new gear matching your want list...)

Here it is: GC Gear Tracker

Note: this thing has dramatically increased my pedal intake so use with caution... it can be dangerous to your financial well-being.

Best place in Austin for fretwork that isn't Straight Frets?

I got a guitar that needs a good fret level. The guitar isn't worth the cost of the Plek from Straight Frets and a good old fashioned human leveling should do just fine. What do?

Anyone ever figure out who the fuck this guy was?

He's in a bunch of pictures with the Beatles, was he one of the guys' brothers or something?

I made a tool to search GC used inventory more efficiently

Mods - please remove if not allowed...

I search the GC used section pretty much every day but was frustrated with its limitations and how generally out-of-date the design feels. So I made my own little web tool for searching. Originally I made it just for myself but after sharing it with a few friends and getting positive feedback I decided to flesh it out and let others use it.

Here it is: GC Gear Tracker!

A few notes:

  • I'm not making any money off it, at least not yet. I explored getting affiliate links or something added and might at some point, but nothing now. And definitely don't want to put ads or otherwise enshittify the experience.
  • If you make an account or log in with Google, your saved searches / want list / etc. will transfer from device to device, but you can also just use it as a guest.
  • I welcome suggestions for improvements or bug fixes, but since I know it will be the first suggestion: I don't have the ability to set up e-mail or text alerts (at least not yet).

Enjoy!
