Headed back to Staunton this week - dinner recs?

Hey all! You were really helpful when I asked for a lunch spot a few weeks ago. We got Remedy Burger and my teenager was THRILLED. I'm planning another stop by there before the camp extravaganza ends in a few weeks. But now I need dinner recs! Early dinner, think 5pm start, for both Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. That means the Shack (closed for vacation) and Maude and the Bear (not open these days) are out, unfortunately. I've dug through this sub and my ideas so far are:

Zynodoa

Queen City

Chop House

For context, we like all kinds of cuisine. We enjoy both fine dining and holes in the wall with great bar food (I love a good wing and potato skin). We reside in Richmond VA so we have lots of food options at home.

Hit me up with your recs, and thank you!

How's your AC unit doing? As in how low are you able to go?

Let me first say, I know that I can't expect our HVAC to cool down the inside more than 20 degrees lower than it is on the outside. That being said - we had our unit replaced entirely with a larger unit back in 2021. It's not old. We have less than 1800 sq feet. And it's set on 78 both upstairs and downstairs and it's currently 80 upstairs. I asked my neighbor and their AC unit is older and they're able to get it down to 76 upstairs. So just wondering if it's me and my "newish" unit or what, lol.

Contractor License Lookup (for work to be done in Henrico)

Contractor license lookup

Hey all! I'm looking for a contractor to renovate a bathroom in RVA/Henrico. I've looked through the RVA sub and have gotten a lot of great recs so far and have started making calls.

I just want to make sure, though, that I'm doing things right as I search to make sure they are currently licensed and insured.

Is this the website?

https://www.dpor.virginia.gov/LicenseLookup

And an expiration date that is before I want the project completed is not what I want to see, right?

(I'm asking bc I looked up someone who's well regarded on the RVA subreddit and the expiration date is 2016 - hoping it's wrong info though!)

Recs for a quick lunch in Staunton tomorrow (Wednesday, 6/24)

Hey all! Dropping my kiddo off at Mary Baldwin tomorrow for a few weeks of camp and we'd like to grab lunch before I head back home. Any recs? For lunch, we like tacos, burgers, sandwiches, bbq...just has to be relatively quick.

Thanks!

Edit: thank you all! I shared every menu with him and he chose remedy burger, which was an absolute hit! We'll be up there for at least 3 more meals and You've all given us plenty of options, thank you so much! What a sweet town Staunton is.

SME turned trainer

Hey all. I'm looking for advice/help if anyone is willing to give it.

After 20 years in my field (university research administration), I moved into a training role. I'm having a blast and learning a lot and I'm lucky to know the subject matter very well. I've taught myself storyline and rise and do most of my work in those platforms.

But I'm missing the meat of "how do adults learn" and "what do instructional designers DO", if you know what I mean. Does anyone have any suggestions for free (to start) courses on those topics? Or good books? I tend to dive right into creating and can get pretty far bc of my decades of experience on the topics themselves but I feel like I'm not doing things right and I really want to learn more and be efficient and productive. I'd also love to learn more about incorporating AI since it doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon.

Fyi, I'm already following Tim Slade and many others on LinkedIn.

I'll take any help. I appreciate you reading this!

Does BEWL provide maintenance doses for people at/under 25 BMI?

Hi! Insurance has finally kicked us all off their coverage plan bc they're money hungry jerks. I don't want to stop the medicine and am looking into companies that will start someone off at a high dose of sema, under/around 24/25 BMI. TIA!

Recommendations/ideas for a college for my son

Hi! First post here. My son is a freshman in a public high school in Virginia. He's in the IB program. He's young and he's our only kid and I'm trying to get ahead of this game as best I can. He's pretty bright but he's not a genius and won't be valedictorian or anything. Can't really imagine him at an ivy but I think considering he's an A student and in IB, an easy college would feel, well, too easy. So I guess we are looking for moderately selective to somewhat selective?

He'd love to stay in Virginia but UVA and William and Mary are maybe a reach just bc they're so unbelievably competitive and honestly, expensive bc we won't qualify for need based aid. HHI is about $180k. This should help us with private schools, just not Virginia state institutions. University of Richmond is an option but I've heard/read that it's full of really snobby kids who love to party. I've heard the same about Washington and Lee.

He is very curious and honestly loves to learn. Super comfortable with adults and talks to them all the time, probably bc he's an only, so his teachers really like him. Super polite and kind. He runs track in the spring and does summer swim but isn't a huge athlete. Very into theatre - he's a great writer and actor and is super into the arts and music but he doesn't want to major in it. He would, however, love to go to a college that would allow him to still be involved in theatre, despite not majoring in it. He does a few clubs, and is president of his class. But he's not creating apps or running a small business lol and he probably never will be. He does plenty of community service bc it's required for IB.

I'm thinking bc he does well in small groups and always has, that a small lib arts college is best for him as opposed to a large R1. He's not at all interested in partying or Greek life - he knows the negatives of addiction as he's seen it in our family and he's truly just not interested in it at all. I support that fully due to family history and genetics.

I've been trolling the Internet for months and just need some new ideas/perspectives/thoughts. So, here I am. :)

Thanks in advance!

What are your GLP1 accessibility predictions (in the United States) for the next few years?

I'm asking for curiosity's sake but also a bit selfishly. I'm new to this sub, but not reddit or the use of GLP1s. I've been lucky enough to have Wegovy prescribed and covered by insurance for close to 2 years, and that is ending in June. Our employer has decided that it costs too much and all PAs will now have to be based on BMI of 35+ - I was only at 30 when I started and am down to 26. I will have zero chance of overturning the decision via appeal.

My story: I'm currently on the highest dose (2.4) and I take a shot every 10-13 days. I somehow have enough in the fridge to last me about a year and after being overweight/obese and dieting my entire life, I don't see much hope to be one of the very few people who can keep the weight off on my own. I'm 5'3 and have been as high as 276, but didn't start on wegovy at that weight - I lost a lot of weight on my own and did keep it off for 4 years (went from 237 to 167 back in 2020) but was never able to break out of the BMI overweight range despite tracking calories and exercising daily. I just have always gained easily and held onto weight easily - hence why I think I am a person who belongs on a GLP1. I also wasn't a super responder - I've only lost betwen 20-25 pounds on wegovy despite being on it for close to 2 years. So really, I'm just never going to be skinny.

So I am wondering today if I will even have a chance to purchase compounded in a year, or if maybe there will be no availability at all. I also wonder if we will have more, and hopefully affordable, options by then.

If you were me, would you buy the compound now while you could, and just store it? I'm totally new to compounding in general, but very open to it. Also open to switching to tirz if that's recommended. I've had no side effects on wegoy except some anhedonia - I've never been constipated and was really never neauseous after the first shot.

TIA for humoring me and chatting with me.
