Hollow-Heart condition and Selecting a Watermelon for Sweetness 🍉
Let's discuss watermelon selection!
I'm in no way an expert in picking a watermelon, but there are a few methods I've read that are truer than others.
Sunspot - Check for the white, bleached patch on the belly.
Sound - There should be a hollow sound when you knock with your knuckles (hardest for me to differentiate).
Weight - Watermelon should be relatively heavy for its size meaning lots of sugary flesh.
Misc - (May not be true, but people swear by): Dry stem, widely spaced bands, South pole (opposite of stem) small diameter.
I picked a watermelon with an irregular shape like the picture above. **Would y'all advise not to pick a watermelon with this shape?** Or it doesn't matter?
The watermelon had the hollow heart condition. It passed the sunspot, weight, and maybe the sound tests but it's shape was irregular. I feel the shape was a sign it would be hollow heart because it had 3 lobes which is probably indicative of the 3 segments of the hollow heart.
Was the shape a dead giveaway? Stay away?
What's your expert methods to determine a good watermelon? 🍉
(Pictures are not mine but looks like the watermelon)
