How are you guys managing TV channels on Smart TVs? Especially for parents who are used to a traditional set-top box
I recently replaced our old Mi TV with a Samsung QLED Smart TV.
Earlier, we were using an Airtel Digital TV SD set-top box. The old Mi TV supported the red/white/yellow RCA (AV) cables, so everything worked fine.
The problem is that the new Samsung QLED TV basically expects HDMI, while our old Airtel set-top box doesn't have HDMI.
I contacted Airtel and was told that I could replace the old box with an HD set-top box by paying some extra amount. However, the local Airtel vendor is refusing to do the box replacement and is asking me to take a new Airtel connection instead.
So I'm trying to understand what other people are doing in this situation.
A few questions:
- Can an existing Airtel Digital TV connection actually be upgraded from the old SD box to an HD box without taking a new connection? If yes, how did you get it done?
- With the HD box, do I need to change my existing channel subscription/package? Currently we pay around ₹300 for a Telugu channels package, which worked with our old setup.
- We also have access to digital/OTT channels through the Smart TV, but my parents find it difficult to navigate apps and find channels. They are very comfortable with the traditional setup-box experience — press a number on the remote and get the channel immediately.
- For those of you with parents at home + Smart TV, what setup are you using now?
- DTH + HD set-top box?
- Smart TV apps only?
- Airtel Xstream / JioFiber / Tata Play / other?
- Some combination of DTH + OTT?
- What would you recommend if the priority is simple channel navigation for parents, while also making use of the Smart TV?
I'd especially like to hear from people in Telangana/Andhra Pradesh who have Telugu channel packages and have gone through a similar transition.
Basically, I'm trying to figure out the simplest and most cost-effective way to get the old-school TV experience on the new Smart TV without unnecessarily taking a completely new connection.
