Rats & Mice (the most common rodents) have many depictions in the last century throughout pop culture and entertainment.
Part of the reason these rodent characters were created was based on our growing understanding of their brain/genes being similar to ours, as well as their depth of emotion. The once stereotyped “shadowy filth” rat became an exciting pursuit for animators and sketchers to transform the creature into a heroic symbol, updating their simple instincts into a world full of adventure.
Few characters still lean into their assumptive nature, Ratigan being an example, but others like Mickey Mouse & Remy have not only separated the rodent from the persona, but their iconic image is presently adored by the people.
One of our superpowers as humans, is creating an imaginative reality that feels so real to our emotion it changes people’s perceptions and perspectives within their life.
