How do you calibrate giving space to someone when they don't communicate it well?
I've been dealing with a fearful avoidant for a few years now - not dating. Just close friends. At the start of all this, I didn't know she was an avoidant. I just knew she distanced when things got close or if she felt wronged in some way (but she wouldn't talk about it directly).
She missed my birthday dinner because she was in a lot of pain. I asked her if I could come meet her for 10-15 minutes, but if she was in too much pain and/or not comfortable, it was completely okay. She said she would like to rest. I told her I understand and apologised for pushing. She asked me later if I was upset. I told her I was not upset. Just sad that I couldn't meet her. That the circumstances were bad but not the people involved. She sent the gifts via DoorDash - and it was missing a handwritten note that had become a tradition for our birthdays. I didn't ask her about it but it gave me a feeling that she was distancing.
Next day, I asked her how she was feeling and checked if she had food to eat. She said she was feeling a little better. But didn't respond to the food question. I called her to just speak to her - she didn't answer. She replied to my food question the next day. I thought she was really sick. So I let it be.
We've been texting daily for 3 years almost so it felt a little odd. But I had seen this pattern before where she would pull away for a few days so I didn't chase.
I took delivery of a new car that same week. and asked her if she wanted to see it. She said no - and "soon".
3 days later, I texted her: "I miss you - in a very human way". Because I did. She wasn't there for my birthday or the car delivery - which I thought were important days for me. She didn't reply. I called her twice over the weekend to check on her health - no answer. I was a little worried and texted her asking if everything was okay. She said she was okay and that she needed downtime.
Fair enough. I thought as much. I sent her a light meme 3 days later just to keep things light and expected no response.
The following weekend, a friend tells me she was on a trek. I felt hurt because her "downtime" now seemed to be a little personal. I texted her saying I can feel some distance between us and if we could speak on the phone for 30 minutes to catch up. She responded, "I am taking time and space off everything to prioritize my mental health. Will talk to you when I'm ready". I said okay and didn't push further
The very same night, a common friend asks me if I was at a bar screening with her. I said no. He said that he assumed I was at the bar screening she was at. At this point, I was pretty sure that the distance is definitely personal.
I felt disrespected because I was being lied to and considered ending the friendship. I spoke to a common friend for perspective. But they didn't know any more than I did. They just added that the friend was really sick a few weeks ago. But that was it. It was during this conversation that the common friend told me that this person was a fearful avoidant. They asked me if I wanted them to speak to the avoidant friend. I said no. And left them a text saying don't speak to them about any of this. It also worried me because she has a pattern of going quiet based on assumptions without clarifying things with me.
When I finally texted the friend saying this feels personal, she said you're not wrong to feel it is personal. And then blew up at me completely saying I was suffocating, obsessive and what not. None of this reflects how the relationship was for 3 years.
Even during New Year's, she sent me warm messages about how she has a lot of me. And it is a privilege to have me in her life. How she was grateful for me in 2025.
To me, all this felt like it came completely out of left field because we had never had such a conversation before. Turns out, the common friend had already spoken to her too. They had given her information like, he knew you were on the trek. But stripped of the context that I had shared - another friend had shared that with me. I did not go looking for that information since I am not active on Social Media. So it probably felt like surveillance.
She was unwilling to listen and didn't even hear what I had to say fully. And left the conversation abruptly. We aren't speaking now and I don't think we will.
After she communicated the need for space, I sent her 3 texts over 14 days. And just going completely quiet feels like self-erasure. And the communication she did provide made it appear like the distance was universal when it was very much personal.
At this point, I am wondering what could I have done differently?
Why do we stoop so low for validation?
A few days ago, someone posted a picture with a ridiculously small waist. And about how they went from 97kg to 72kg through diet and workout.
Oddly, they had another post on a different community - same pose, phone angle, etc. But with a shirt on. On closer inspection, you'll see the pattern on the door is distorted near the back. Telltale sign.
As expected, both AI generated images.
A lot of us struggle with body dysmorphia already. Do we really need such things to make it worse?

Someone posted this on Twitter. A massive hoarding blocking the entire footpath right outside the Congress office on Queen's Road.
