What to do about rain on cover for above ground pool

This is my husband and I’s first season with an above ground pool. We closed it a few days ago. We used a device in the middle to elevate the cover in hopes rain water would run off, but no matter how we adjust it it’s not working. My husband thinks there has to be a solution. I’ve told him just to pump it off the cover but he “doesn’t want to do that every single time it rains”. What do you all do to remedy this?

Food for our GSP who may have allergies

About a month ago we noticed our GSP had red, itchy paws. She was licking them a lot, they would get crusty etc. We’ve been giving her 10mg daily Claritin which seems to help. Now though we have noticed her belly seems red and itchy too. On her really itchy days I give her Benadryl too.

Now I’m leaning more towards maybe a food allergy. She’s 18 months.

How can you tell if it’s environmental or a food allergy?

If you have a dog with food allergies, what is the best food to give them? I’ve heard salmon based is better than chicken as chicken tends to be a frequent allergen.

Is there a canine equivalent of human Gas X?

You already know where I’m going with this. The last 7-10 days in this house have been a giant stink fest. I almost can’t take it anymore 😂 what can I give her? She’s likely grazing on all the grass and shit outside which I’m sure is the culprit but damn! Its rank. Anyone else?

Is feeling lonely in a marriage enough reason to leave?

I can’t believe I’m coming to the Internet about my marriage but I haven’t really told anyone about how I’ve been feeling.

I’ve (35F) been married to my husband (35M) since 2015. We have two kids, ages 6&8. He’s in the military. When we first married he was gone a couple days a month and that was pretty much it. As the years have progressed, the amount of travel has increased. His standard work week is the typical Monday to Friday gig, but as he has been promoted in rank he has traveled a lot more. He’ll be gone for 4 days at a time once a month, with a few overnights or 2 day gig here and there. This year, he’s been gone in April for a week, 22 days in May, and 20 days in August. On my end, I have managed working part time, managing the kids, the dogs, our home, and our 4 acres of property. When my husband is home, we are either busy with the kids, or I am working because I cannot when he’s gone. Often he’s asleep by 9-9:30pm, and I am awake and alone again. I know alot of this is just a season, the last few months I have been severely questioning this is how I want my marriage to be.

As of recent, my biggest complaint is how lonely I feel even though I am married. This last year has been especially hard because I made the hard decision to go low contact with both of parents after years of emotional turmoil on my end stemming from emotional abuse as a teen and young adult. Given this, I have felt very isolated and a level of loneliness I don’t think I ever envisioned or that anyone can understand unless they have been through it.

I feel disconnected from my husband. When he’s home, things are not bad. We don’t have a terrible marriage. But I feel like a true connection is lacking. In his more recent trips away, I find I do not miss him like I should. I miss him being around, but I don’t yearn for his return home the way you would think a wife would.

By jointing the military out of high school he has made a lot of sacrifices in his life. But, being married to him, so have I. I have sacrificed time and time again, time with him as his wife and the mother of his children. I have not been able to have a full time job (I work as needed as a nurse) because of his job and the kids. I have a masters degree I have not been able to use because I can’t. My husband is not a bad man. He doesn’t treat me poorly and takes care of us. So feeling this way has me feeling extremely guilty. I’m not sleeping, I’ve had panic attacks for a week, and I’ve been crying every single day.

Yesterday when he revealed to me upon being away from July 30-Aug 15, he will have to leave again Aug 31-Sept 4, I lost it. I did tell him how I am feeling. Just as I think he understands, he says things like “if I were you I would just be strong and deal with it”, “I’m not always travel this much” and “things should calm down”, or “maybe you can stay at home with the kids”. I’m trying to help him understand that I don’t need help at home. I need a more present spouse. He has told me he “isn’t sure if he wants to be married to someone who isn’t “all in”” and I do not fault him for that because I don’t think I would either.

I don’t want him to quit his job for me. He has been in the military for 18 years. This is his life. I can truthfully say that if I would have known this would have been my life or how much he traveled, I don’t think I would have married him. My kids are the only thing truly stopping me from leaving. I do not in any way want to disrupt their life. They are the sweetest, most innocent babies and would be devastated. I feel like a traveling husband isn’t a valid enough reason to want to divorce. It’s not like my life would look much different if I did. In fact, it would be harder. I don’t want to blow up my life over this but I also don’t want to look back in 10 years when he’s still in the military, and wish I would have done things differently.

I want to hear from women whose spouses or ex spouses traveled. Did you ever feel like this? What advice do you have?

Helping a friend out

I’m helping a friend out with this pool. It’s 4500gal chlorine pool. His water is that mildly blue color. I brought my Taylor test kit to his house yesterday to do basic stuff and got the following numbers:
FC 17
CC 0
pH 6.8
CYA 40

Usually I would say SLAM it but he has no CC in it. He’s rinsing his filter daily. I told him to run his pump 24/7 for awhile, brush and vacuum the pool. Any other suggestions. No visible spots of algae in the pool as of now.

I just wanna run away.

The last week or so has been really hard and I’m feeling like I could just run away and never come back.

I’m 35 and married to a military man who travels a decent amount for work. We’ve been married for 10 years and have two kids, ages 6&8. Our life isn’t terrible - I cannot complain. He’s good to me, is a great father, and provider. He always dives in to help when I need. Our sex life is mediocre. No dead bedroom but not mind blowing sex either. He often falls asleep around 9pm and I’m awake/alone until whatever time I fall asleep which is often late. I often feel very alone. The last year or so I just feel like there is something missing in my life but I can’t put my finger on it.

He works full time, I’m a contingent ER nurse who works 3 days a week. I like my job but don’t love it, I can’t really picture myself doing anything else and the flexibility is key right now. We’ve been working hard to pay off some debt but I feel like we can’t get ahead. I’ve been low contact with my Mom by choice for the last year after coming to terms with some emotional abuse, parentification, and narcissistic behavior. It’s been a lot harder than I thought. I thought I would get more relief than I have, instead I circle around with guilt and healing. Unless you’ve been through something similar, I find it hard for others including my spouse to truly understand the impact it’s has on my life.

The last few days I haven’t slept, I’ve had headaches, and I have a constant state of nausea. My period came a week early. I’m not sleeping. I would never leave my kids because I could never ever abandon them but I just want to either run away, or crawl into a hole and never come out. Is this just “a season of life” I’m in? Has anyone ever felt this way? I love my husband and my kids but sometimes I just could just run away.

Can your GSP swim?

We head to northern MI every summer, and over the holiday weekend we realized our GSP is not a strong swimmer. She loves to play in the water but she spends a lot of energy trying to swim almost upright. I wonder if getting her a life jacket would help her learn how to doggie paddle and swim with more ease. Can your GSP swim? Was it natural for them? She’s 16 months and weights about 50lb.

How important are birthday party decorations to your kids?

Hi all!

I am throwing my daughter a Wicked themed 8th birthday pool party. I am generally a big birthday gal and enjoy making my kids (or anyone for that matter) feel special on their birthday. Sometimes I find myself pouring myself into parties a little too much and going overboard with decorations and such. This year funds are a little tighter, so I may need to cut back on decorations. For example, I normally do a balloon arch of some kind, but am eliminating that $300 expense. I did consider doing my own, but even then I would be almost $100 for the arch support, balloon pump, and balloons. I can get 2 dozen balloons for $25, so I was considering just doing normal bunches throughout the deck and pool area. In your experience, do your kids or the attendees notice a difference when there is minimal vs more extravagant decorations?

I know this seems awfully petty to some, but to me it’s always been my favorite part about planning my kids birthdays and I’m struggling with feeling like it will be inadequate in that sense.

Calling all sweets lovers

Hello all!
I will be beginning a calorie deficit right after the 4th holiday. I am not new to counting macros, tracking food, etc so I am well prepared in that aspect but I am a total sweets lover. This is where I struggle with cuts, and I would like to find a way to keep some dessert in my rotations.

What are your favorite calorie deficit desserts?

Ready to roll!☀️

I wanted to extend a thank you to many Redditors of this sub who have provided me with endless amounts of information on pool ownership and management. I have spent countless hours scrolling on here learning as much as possible about pools and the like. My husband is active duty military, and with significant travel I didn’t want to be the clueless wife when it came to the pool 😂 At this rate I probably know more than my husband regarding the pool but that’s ok! Just wrapped up the deck modification and our pool project is officially complete.

New pool owners: get to know this sub, and well. You won’t regret it. And to those who contribute their knowledge - thank you!

Gonna put some info below in case anyone is curious, I know I sure was whenever I saw pics.

- Pool itself was ordered from poolfactory.com where we built our own kit, and had pool professionally installed including leveling
- Pool is 100% resin, oval 12x20’x54”, saltwater, 6300gal
- Pump is a Aquapro 1.5HP variable speed cartridge filter
- SWG is Hayward Aqua Trol
- Hubs and I made a custom reel mount for our solar cover, which has helped a lot to heat the water and mitigate heat loss overnight
- We use troublefreepool.com’s TFP-100 salt kit for testing/balancing water chemistry
- Not pictured: gate at base of deck stairs and doorwall alarm for the kiddos

Prep for kid’s pool party

Hi all! First time pool owner/operator with a saltwater AGP. My soon to be 8yo daughter is having a pool party with about 8 girls in mid July. I’m wondering what, if anything, I should plan to do BEFORE or AFTER the party for water chemistry. I’m sure there will be some peeing in the pool 🫣

I did my weekly test yesterday and basic chem is currently at: FC 12, CYA 60, pH 7.8, TA 110, salt 3400

At what age did you notice your sausage dog slowing down or aging?

The title basically says it all. Our girl turned 9 and we’ve noticed if she runs around a lot or chases my kids in yard for a day, she’s pretty slow the following day. All the dog does is sleep. She has her yearly vet visit next month when I plan to ask for some blood work as I’ve noticed some possible signs of diabetes.

Just curious as to others experiences!

What temperature is your UNHEATED pool right now?

Just curious! This is our first summer with our saltwater ABP. We live in Michigan, and the water is currently 75 degrees. Where do you live and what temp is your water sitting at?

How much does your GSP sleep?

Our 14 month old GSP has been sleeping ALOT the last 4 days. I’m talking 8pm-7am then most of the day with small periods of play. A little less interested in outside time and toys, still eating/drinking/toileting normal. We did have a busy Mother’s Day weekend where she barely napped during the day so I wonder if she’s catching up. Was just curious how much your pup sleeps that is close in age.

Prepping for inspection

We had a 12x20’ oval all resin saltwater pool professionally installed and will be scheduling the inspection for next week. The electrical was all done, inspected, and passed.

The pool itself is 54” tall, so no barrier is needed. The ladder is an A frame with lockable stairs and is also removable. The pool is against our deck, about 15” away. We do plan to do deck modifications at a later time. To prep for that we had a gate installed for the deck stairs that meets code standard (48” from grade, opens away from pool” etc) but that was also just because I have young kids too.

Is there anything major I need to do to prepare and PASS the inspection the first time? Given then permit itself was almost $500, I do not want to pay for multiple inspections and give the township any more of my money. 😂

Should I take down the overhead deck lights? I’m not sure if they will make me take those down or not.
