Captain Diego - "Colombia needs us!"

As you may have heard there was a massive earthquake in Colombia last week. The epicenter was in the western half of the country, which has given us the Chará brothers, Dairon, Mosquera, Fory, Caicedo, Perlaza, Moreno, Arboleda... Basically, every Colombian player that the Timbers have ever had is from the affected area. Stuff on the ground is *dire* y'all...

Diego is calling us to action, so if you have a couple of bucks to spare, consider donating to:

These two are particularly good because they already had established networks and relationships among the affected communities (esp. many of the ones out in the middle of nowhere, where other NGOs never show up) and boots on the ground. They will still be there after all the other NGOs leave.

You can also donate directly to the Colombian Red Cross and support front line relief efforts.

A few dollars go a long way when the exchange rate is 3050-to-1!

Janssen presser Spanish language answers translated

Since they didn't translate them in the clip they posted on YouTube, here's Janssen's answer to the questions in Spanish at the end of Friday's presser.

Q: Hello. How are you? I hope that you've had a good welcome here at the training facility. I'd like to know, how do you see the internal competition with Venezuelan Kevin Kelsy, who has been having a great season scoring almost 10 goals? Do you think it makes sense to play with two strikers or to compete for a single spot?

A: Well, for me the most important thing is the team. If it's possible for me to help with anything, I'm here for it. Not only in games, but in training, we're gonna be giving it our best. I think that we can play together but if not one of the two of us will play and if it's him, I'm here to help and [something about the "other side also"... can't quite make it out].

Q: Welcome Janssen. I remember you from Monterrey. You really liked the city and people really loved you there. Why choose MLS? Given that you already had experience in Mexico, why not go back to Mexico and instead come here?

A: Because "I already did" Mexico... I don't know how to translate that. Yes, I experienced Mexico but now I want something different. I think that Portland is a new stage in my career and I want something different and I think MLS is better for me. But I also miss the people in Mexico because it was a perfect experience for me. I love the people and I love Rayados as well, but this is a different moment for me and I want to try something new.

Q: In less than Portland are going to face off with LAFC down in California. How do feel about facing your former teammate Heung-Min Son?

A: Yes, Sonny is a very good person. I was with him for 2 or 3 years and he's a great person. A player with a lot of quality. But it's these kinds of games that make me want to play in MLS. I want to play big matches against big players and "I cannot wait"... I can't wait.

Q: Many people think that MLS is a retirement league. You're 32, but what do you tell people, what do you tell the Portland fans? What are you bringing to the Timbers?

A: I'm bringing 100%. If I was only going to 99% to give, I wouldn't be playing. I'm here 100% and I'm not looking to retire. I definitely have at least two more years with a lot of energy and quality and I'm here to help all my teammates and to win something (and with a lot of goals and assists, I hope)

Chará on why the team is playing better

Since it wasn't translated to English...

During the post-game presser after the RSL match, Felipe Ramis of Conexión Deportiva asked Chará why the team seems to be playing so much better under Cassidy than under Neville. Here's what Diego had to say:

"Well, I think we've made a bigger emphasis on the basics. Going back and starting from a more organized base and build up our game from there. I think that the players that are in charge of creating feel more free and that's very important. We saw today that Da Costa played a good game. Him and Velde, I think that the freedom that they feel is a little different than what they felt at the beginning of the season."

Spanish language broadcast yesterday said that Cifuentes is very likely to bring Xavi Calm as one of his assistant coaches.

At around the 37th minute mark, the commentators on the Spanish language broadcast of the RSL match said that Cifuentes is very likely to bring his longtime assistant Xavi Calm with him to Portland. Calm has been his assistant dating back to his time at Rubí, Sant Adreu, and L'Hospitalet in the Spanish 3rd division and also at Hammarby in Sweden and QPR and Leicester City in the Championship.

More on Calm [here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xavi\_Calm).

PUI faculty members, what do you wish you had known about faculty jobs at PUIs when you were a grad student/postdoc? Research university faculty what would you like to know about PUI jobs when your students/postdocs ask you about them?

I'm organizing a career panel at a large national conference about jobs at primarily undergraduate/teaching focused institutions. I am interested in figuring out what grad students and postdocs coming from traditional research universities might want to/should know faculty positions and the job search process at PUIs. The emphasis is on STEM, but if you are in the Humanities or Social Sciences and have something that you think might apply to all PUI faculty, I'm definitely interested in hearing it. If you are a faculty member at a research university and have students that approach you about pursuing careers at PUIs, what information do you not have that you wish you had to give them?

In The Watchmen, Ozymandias says that Alexander The Great's "view of a united world was unprecedented". Did Alexander and the Macedonians actually have certain world views that were novel and also inspired Alexander's conquests?

Obviously novelty in antiquity especially when it comes to ideas is hard to pin down, but did the Macedonians have any specific world views that might have been different than what was the norm at the time that drove Alexander's drive for conquest or was it more "More land + subjects = Good" like conquerors dating back forever? I.e., were Alexander's campaigns (and Phillip's before him) actually driven by any particular higher philosophical ideas beyond straight up conquest/expansion/thirst for power/wealth?

Spanish language broadcast said that new coach announcement is coming next week.

Just got around to watching yesterday's match. Carlos Ramírez said a team source told him there is already somebody signed and the announcement is coming early next week. It was somewhere around the 6-7' mark.

So is Pipe not actually going anywhere?

There hasn't been a formal announcement of him being let go or signing anywhere and he was still doing ads for local car dealerships a week or two ago. Bunch of Timbers (and even former Timbers) responded to the ad but really only Finn responded to the cryptic message that suggested he was leaving from mid-May.

STEM Postdocs/Grad Students interested in careers at teaching-focused and/or primarily-undergraduate institutions, what questions do you have?

I'm organizing a panel of engineering/physics/applied math faculty from teaching focused and/or primarily-undergraduate institutions to talk about their experiences in front of an audience of postdocs and grad students. If you were in the audience, what would you like to learn about these career paths or what questions would you ask people on the panel if given the chance? (I'll try to answer your questions here as best as I am able given my experience teaching at several PUIs)

The FAA issued a month long ban on drone flights for "special security reasons" for downtown Portland. Last time this happened, there was an ICE surge. Anybody know that this is about?
