Freezer Tracker

Freezer Tracker

So we have a wonderful upright freezer in our garage. The idea is to utilize it not just for meat but also for freezer meals, easy reheatable lunches and Etc. I despise food waste probably more than anything so everything gets broken down into freezable servings to use again at a future date.

The problem however is I was losing track of what was in my freezer and I really didn't want to go buy something. I've tried digital apps before I've tried paper notebooks but it hit me the other day that a dry erase marker works great on my freezer so this is what I come up with.

I used a magnet that we already had, yarn already had, super glue already had, and only bought the dry erase markers which I needed anyways.

I tied one end of the yarn to the magnet super glued the other end to the cap of the marker so now I can just interchange markers out and got to sorting everything on the freezer.

So while not a complete no-, buy project it was very minimal and it will help future No buys and anti-consumption by making sure I use what I have and not letting things go to waste. Which is a huge win in my book.

What's your goals to further your anti-consumption journey in August?

It's the start of a new month and I'm doing my typical monthly plan and got to wondering what do you do plan to do over the next month to continue your anti-consumption living.

For me I'm doing a no-buy month. My main goal is to pay some extra towards bills, secondary goal is to use what I have on hand.

I'm allowing groceries (but limiting myself to half my normal budget and using my sticker pantry and freezer), one date lunch/dinner a week with hubby, gas and that's it. There's nothing else I really need.

Feeling defeated... Travel and Anticonsumption

We are once again 7 hours from home bc my fatjer-law is back in the hospital. I have no issue with coming down to see him, I lost my dad 6 years ago and I will come with my husband to see his dad every weekend of that's what he needs.

BUT

The amounts of consuming we are doing is really taking a toll on me on top of everything else. Maybe it's bc it's the only thing I feel like I should be able to control?

The amount of takeout were consuming is horrendous, there's nothing to do outside of shopping (and none of its "good" shopping) if we aren't sitting in the hospital. We're in a podunk country town in Louisiana were there is nothing to do but eat, go to Walmart or flea markets. So far I've kept us out of the shopping places but I don't know how much longer I can keep the family occupied.

Sorry... Just venting. Caught between a Rick and a hard place an am unvale to fix anything.

They are mad at me because I won't refill the feeder yet

Because of the lack of trees anywhere in the Horizon I tend to get a lot of red-winged blackbirds and common grackles so I limit them to one bird feeder full of feed a day plus their little buffet thing. If I didn't limit them I would go through way too much bird feed in just a week. However it's funny because when they are out they sit on the fence and squawk at me disapprovingly I can feel their judging eyes

How's your journey in anti-consumption going today?

I broke down and got lunch today while out doing deliveries. Normally I take my lunch with me but I didn't sleep well and I woke up late and didn't have time to get my lunch made before I ran out the door.

Went shopping... No over consumption today!

And only bought what was absolutely needed.

Roma tomates

Thai green Chili's

Chicken thighs

Plain yogurt

Avocados

Atta flour

Head and shoulder shampoo for the husband

Potassium supplements

Fruits

Milk

Sandwich meat

And instead of buying pre-made food at the local Indian Mart I hit up the library to check out a Indian Cookbook so I can make my own curry to go with my roti tonight.

I have such a habit of buying extra for "what ifs" or "I might cook" bc I love to cook but then rarely follow through.

And it's a double win bc of instead of looking on Pinterest for a questionable "authentic" recipe (my goal of lessing digital consumption) I supported my local library.

What are your anti-consumption struggles?

What area do you struggle the most in with your journey in anti-consumption living?

Is it buying certain items, going out to eat, or with frivolous spending on small items that add up. Do you struggle with a mental disorder that consumption feeds into dopamine rushes?

If you struggled with something in the past and are able to 'control the urges', what tips and advice can you give others?

Lowering Digital Consumption

I've been trying to lower my digital consumption which I think is just as important as lowering other types of consumption.

I swapped most digital books for being able to do physical ones. I did keep my audiobook app because I get it to the library and it comes in handy when I'm driving. I've gotten rid of all but two streaming services and really personally only use one the other one is for my husband and his football and I'm not touching that with a 10-ft pole lol

I limit myself on social media mainly I am here and that's really it. I have a Facebook but I'm not on it as much anymore because I found all I did on it was doom scroll.

But I'm looking for other ways to lower my digital footprint so to speak. I have moved all of my photos off of Google photos onto my actual hard drive and will be backing those up on the disc but I do not know how long term that's going to be because I won't the pictures to be accessible to the future and yeah that's a whole thing there. any suggestions on the photo end of it?

And then I think i might start migrating off of google. Has anyone else basically left the internet or drastically downsized their usage? If so any advice tips tricks Etc I would greatly appreciate

What does anit-consumption living look like to you?

There are many levels and even many 'subsections' of anti-consumption living that come about as a result of changing habits in your daily life.

For our family our journey of anti-consumption started with me about 20 years ago with the idea of living like my Grandmother. Which was more slow living and being mindful but over the years it's progressed into a good mid-to upper ranage of anti-consumption. We cook most of our food from scratch, I refuse to buy 95% of pre-made foods. The next step is to start producing our own food, slowly at first then expanding as I get more comfortable/knowledgable.

When we buy for home decor (including furniture) we buy used or refurbished pieces. In fact second-hand buying was a huge step into anti-consumption. I figure if I'm going to consume it's better served to buy things that would otherwise end up in the trash.

I've also noticed as a by product of having this mentality over the last decade my drive to being, not zero-waste but like 70% less waste, has gone up significantly.

Now my youngest daughter (18) is pushing us to go even further and I love it. She's great at being that person who says, "but do you really" when any of the family talks about needing something new.

A new anti consumption living "sister" sub

I started a new sub /r/anticonsumptionliving that's more the small day to day ideas tips and wins of living an anti-consumption life. It's mainly for the posts that don't quiet for here or posts that get lost among the heavier (and much needed) discussions. There are a lot of great individual subs for plastic free living, frugal living, recycling and reducing and etc but nothing that like combines it all together. So I thought why not create a sub that let's just throw it all in one big category with the main focus being anti-consumption and spreading Awareness on ways to live this life in our day to day world.

And thanks to the mods here for letting me post about it 🙂

If youre interested just head on over. Between house chores and garden tours I'll be fiddling around with the sub today trying to get it up and going in a cohesive manner that makes sense.

Welcome to r/anticonsumptionliving - Read First then say hi! 👋

Hi all and welcome.

This sub for all things related to day to day anti-consumption living. My hope is this sub takes off and inspires us all to find new ways to lower our consumption in everyday life outside of avoiding certain companies, brands, or major life choices (like no flying). This community is inclusive and welcoming to every stage of anti-consumptionism, from those just starting the journey of becoming anti-consumptionest to the harden veterans of of anti-consumption living.

What this sub is not, is a place to rant/rave or start heavy discussions on the evils of companies, brands, products or AI and consumerism. That's best left in /r/anticonsumption I have nothing against those discussions but there's already a place for it and this sub isn't trying to be a second one. This is more for the post that don't quite fit there. 😊

What to Post:

*questions on how to reduce consumption in day to day living

*tips and ideas and how to reduce consumption

*goals for reducing your day to day consumption

*wins over consumption by reuisng, rethinking or just saying no to new purchases

*vents/rants on mindless over consumption

What not to post:

* political rants/vents or brand/product/company bashing

*brand/product solicitation or recs (including asking for recs)

*AI generated content unless it's specifically labeled as AI content and your commentary is human generated and relevant to anti-consumption

*no memes, inspirational quite type pics... This is to help cut down on bots

So welcome and enjoy!

The most exotic of birds...

The long ear furried brown bird 😋

Didn't know until today that they will snack on seeds spilled by the birds. I'm guessing the bugs and berries blend is a favorite

Being chastised for being "over excited"

Does anyone else deal with this? Getting excited and animated over something just to have a family member tell you youre annoying?

My young adult daughter just told me I was being too much and annoying bc I was excited and passionate about a movie I wnat to go see with my husband this weekend. (all in a car going to dinner) it's not the first time she's reacted this way.

My husband doesn't seem to mind me being me and I know it shouldn't bother me as much as it does that my kid reacted this way.

But I'm sitting here in a restaurant trying not to cry because even my own kid won't accept me the way I am.

Fellow Goths and Alt People

So I made a post about 7 months or so ago asking if there was interest in a goth/alternative fashion store. I was met with overwhelming positive responses which is wonderful. And I am in the process of making it happen my next step is finding a location.

Realistically I would prefer to be in Springdale downtown but I am finding it hard to find a location that isn't way out of budget (yes I have a realtor please don't message me about being my realtor)

So my question to you is if I can't find a location in Springdale would you be willing to travel to Centerton or Bentonville.

Once I find a location I should if everything goes right be open around October-December!

What are we doing instead of bubble baths or etc?

There is nothing I like more than to treat myself to a long hot bubble bath after an extremely long stressful week spent at my in-laws (or stressful week in general).

I recently used up the last of my bubble bath and haven't wanted to buy more because I'm trying to cut back on my plastic consumption. I do use epsom salt but I don't prefer it just because of the way it makes my skin feel.

So what are we doing to continue the anti-consumption anti-plastic lifestyle while still being able to have a fancy bath once a week?
