Anything I should know about these cuff links?

Hi, I have a set of cuff links that belonged to my great grandfather. He lived in Sydney, Australia between 1900 and 1970 (approx.). I don't have any history of him travelling abroad so assume they would have been purchased in Australia.

I'm going to get these repurposed into rings. I never wear cuff links and want them to be something I do use. Will keep the oval as the ring face and use the other material for the band.

Before doing that I'd like to know a bit more about the cuff links themselves. Make sure I'm not destroying something super rare or valuable or whatever. I don't think I am but better to be safe than sorry!

Australian cuff links from early 20th century

Hi, I have a set of cuff links that belonged to my great grandfather. He lived in Sydney, Australia between 1900 and 1970 (approx.). I don't have any history of him travelling abroad so assume they would have been purchased in Australia.

I am wondering if you can tell me anything about the material and manufacturer of these? I'm about to get them repurposed into rings and would like to make sure that there's nothing I should be aware of being doing that.

Analog Japan [Pentax 17, Kodak Gold 200]

Yes I’m another recently returned Japan tourist. A new, big fan of the Pentax 17 as a travel camera. Still getting used to the zone focus and light capabilities.

Any constructive feedback welcome!

Tokyo vintage clothes shopping?

Wondering if anyone can give me insights into vintage clothes shopping in Tokyo? Im currently in Japan and have plans to go vintage shopping in Tokyo. But I’m currently in Kanazawa and the stores here are insanely expensive. Im talking 150,000 yen/$150 AUD for a t-shirt expensive.

I accept you pay more for curation at a vintage store rather than a thrift store. But these prices are crazy. Its now made me reconsider if I should go vintage shopping in Tokyo or just change my plans to go and do something else. I had planned to go to Shimokitazawa but now I’m thinking that’ll be a trap and I’ll just hate it because I can’t genuinely shop.

Does anyone have any advice on this? Are there cheaper places to go?

Upgrade chances - MEL to NRT

Hi all, I’m flying QF79 Melbourne to Narita on Monday (15/6). I’m Platinum travelling solo and put in a classic upgrade request at time of booking. Booked in Economy Saver. Can anyone advise my likelihood of getting the upgrade? I’d think my chances are good but am prepping for the economy flight. I scored a bulk head seat on the side so will be best economy can be.

Edit: Got the upgrade!

Some pics from the first roll through the Pentax 17

Really pleased with how these turned out from a quick walk around the lake.

Film stock advice

Hey, I’ve just bought myself a Pentax 17. Its my toy to get back into film photography in a cheaper and fun way. I have low stakes and just want to take happy snaps and holiday photos. Keen to get advice on the best film to use for it for an upcoming trip to Japan. I’d like something that gives latitude and a prefer a golden image but am not set on anything in particular. Am I best off with Kodak gold or should I invest in Portra? Is there a different stock I should go for? Whats your experience with different stocks been like?

Advice on hotel location

Hi all,

I’m travelling to Kyoto in a couple of weeks to attend a conference and need to pick accommodation. The conference is at the International Convention Centre and I’ve decided to stay in the centre of the city and commute by subway to the conference each day rather than stay at the centre. This is because I would like to explore and do some activities at night around the conference.

I’d like advice on the best place to stay that’s on the Karasuma line and has decent night life surrounding, e.g. laneways, restaurants, shops open late.

I’m travelling alone so just need 1 bedroom and would prefer a gym or access to nice places to run.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Fukuoka or Kanazawa

Hi everyone,

I'm travelling to Japan for my second trip in June. I have done the key stops of the golden route and have 2-3 days spare that I'm trying to fill. I will be in Kyoto and am wondering if Fukuoka or Kanazawa would be a better option? The distance to Fukuoka doesn't worry me, so would be the bullet train down and then back to Tokyo. The alternative is I'll go to Tokyo and do day trips from there to different places, Mt Fuji etc.

I'm interested in vintage shopping, film photography, general vibes of Japan. Any advice would be appreciated.

Circular needles and beginner patterns

Hi all, I'm thinking about getting into knitting. I've been crocheting for a number of years and now want to try and knit a blanket and a jumper. I already have some yarn but need knitting needles. Any advice on a good, cheap entry level set of circular knitting needles?

Would also welcome any suggested patterns for easy introductions to both a striped log cabin blanket and a relaxed jumper. TIA!
