Yesterday's big find*! Plus a few others

*I did not fall down the cliff this time, though the tide was higher than I expected. Any idea what this was from? A very unique color and the letters are not on the expected side

Informal education on mollusks?

So I'm not sure that I want to be a marine biologist as a career but I am super interested in learning more in depth about my local mollusk species (Central coast of California). Any suggestions on where I might find info or even what to look for in my own observations?

Difference between flat and red abalone

How can I tell the difference? I've collected a lot of abalone shells that have washed up on the beach, and I'm beginning to wonder if I actually have some flat abalones vs just all reds. Is there anything distinctive that the flat abalones have?

Quick question about ocean kayaking

I'd post in the basic questions thread but it doesn't seem like anyone's actually answering anything there.

I'm interested in getting a basic kayak for light ocean areas, in calm spots like in a small bay. I don't have much space but I saw that the Oru Lake seems to be relatively small and not too expensive. Would there be much issue taking it out in mostly calm waters in the ocean? I generally want to use it to get to small coves that aren't otherwise accessible from land. Pictured is one example.

Thanks!

Amphissa lineata, a rare undescribed species

I had found a few in the recent past, but yesterday found three more!

The first two photos are the A. lineata, the next three are the closest species, A. versicolor and a bonus at the end of a very pretty shard of a pinto abalone.

Is there a bachelor's degree in archival studies?

I'm interested in archiving and do a lot of hobby archiving on my own. I'm thinking of possibly going for an MLIS in the future, but I'm not sure I'll have many job options for archival work here. But I'd still like to study that if it's an option. Have you heard of a bachelor's in archiving or something similar?

If I'm lucky, I'll be working at a college library in some form.

Found near Piedras Blancas

Found this near the lighthouse stuck in the sand. Do you think it could be part of a shipwreck in the area, like the *Harlech Castle* or *Sierra Nevada*? I found a number of other metal pieces out there too, this is the only one I've kept (since I was collecting trash that day).
