I think Tencent is trying to simply the foreign visitor payment experience by launching this new TenpayGo app, and it definitely makes sense. Wechat is convoluted af and if a tourist just wants to pay, they have to jump through so many hoops to get there
The new app is cleaner in UI, simpler to use, and under 200 rmb is no fee. the ios version also supports apple pay inside the app, meaning instead of adding a credit card, you just use the apple pay button, then you will be able to pay the merchant via QR code.
Signup is easy, use gmail (otherwise you will get hit with the dreaded closed beta popup), get a 2FA code sent to gmail, put it in, and then activate apple pay or add in a new credit card. That's it, no need for any other verification.
