The Texas Alum Running Texas Tech Into the Ground

Today's NYT on the Orwellian leadership in Lubbock.

From the article: "Mr. Creighton, who is from Conroe, Texas, north of Houston, earned a bachelor’s degree in government from the University of Texas at Austin and a law degree from Oklahoma City University. He said his views on higher education were shaped, in part, by his own difficulties paying for college. "

Why was his tuition at Texas so expensive? It's an easy answer. In 1986 UT tripled tuition - increasing the price per unit to $12. There were protests on campus.

Even with that increase the state invested in undergraduate education, covering more than 75 percent of the cost. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s the state continued to replace state funds with tuition dollars - effectively taxing students to pay for state government.

Today the state covers about 10 percent of undergraduate education. GenX politicians got their education subsidized by taxpayers and now want future generations to "do it in their own, like I did." Except they didn't.

Instant Karma Seat Swap

SFO to SAN this morning. Guy comes on board with what appears to be his sister - a special needs adult. They are separated in the two middle seats of Row19.

The guy in 19 C offers (of his own accord) to trade his aisle for the brother's middle to allow the siblings to sit together.

The brother sits down in 19C and his sister is ecstatic, giving him a huge hug.

The FA comes by and and tells 19D she can sit in another row with an empty middle. Guy from 19C now has an empty seat next to him.

Good on the FA for noticing what was happening and making everyone more comfortable and kudos to 19C for being a good dude.

I'm not exactly sure what I was charged for this pour...

Walked into my local Elks Lodge and the bartender was excited to show me a new bottle - my wife had a Tito's and tonic and the bill was $17.

Field Trip To Redwood Empire

Went to the Redwood Empire distillery and tasting room last week.

It's located in a former naval ship yard on Mare Island, just east of San Francisco in Vallejo.

The distillery is part of a 100 year vision to restore the island and make it a destination spot. There's a long way to go, but it's well worth the visit.

We've been on a lot of tours and this one was one of the best. Our guide was well versed in the production and the product - we've had some tours (looking at you, Angel's Envy) where the guides only knew the script.

It's a $40 tour with tasting along the way. We had friends along on their first visit to a distillery and they were blown away.

I ended up buying 5 bottles to bring home, four that I can't get in my town and a wheater that is only available at the distillery.

Next time I'm in the area, I'm going back!

It was our turn to host the monthly dinner group...

13 adults and 3 kids left full and happy.

19 lbs brisket trimmed to about 13.5 lbs. RecTec 700 at 225 straight through for 16 hours, wrapped in paper at 6:30 AM (somewhere around 165).

Honestly, it wasn't the best we've done, but it was still really tasty. Bark was perfect and the point was delicious. The flat seemed more dry than normal, maybe because I got a little irrationally exuberant on the trimming.

I'll chop what's left for sandwiches.

Dirt clouds from catcher mitts...

This weekend I've noticed the explosion of dirt on every pitch that makes it to the catcher (except on field turf).

Catchers must be rubbing their gloves in the sand between pitches - is there a logic behind it or is it just the new cool thing to do?

Worth $185? Absolutely! (caveat inside)

Got a text from a friend at 7:20 PM: "I'm at Costco and they just put out about a dozen bottles of JD 10."

I couldn't get there by 8 PM, so I called my college aged son to ask him to make a run.

He doesn't drink and had already settled into his evening, but he was game to change back to regular clothes and run over.

Bottle was $79.99 plus tax. When I got home I gave him $100 for taking care of me when he really had other things he would enjoy doing more.

I'll pop it open this weekend and toast my kid who is a good student and a good person!

(PS - of course I live in California!)

We were at a favorite spot with good cocktails and an amazing collection of high end bottles that are very pricey.

The ER 12 was $30, but it was a decent pour.

Honestly, I prefer the 10 year. This had a definite "hot" quality which seemed odd for a 95 proof bourbon. It was tasty, but given the option I'd pass on this for anything above $50.

Cheers!

I have always thought ESPN could save a lot of money while making the games more interesting by having the home team play by play team on the audio.

Even when the Horns are away, I love hearing the opposing PxP team.
