Sarah Palmer’s retcon

Just finished watching Season 3 and this question has been in my mind since the Sarah/JUDY reveal.

In the original two seasons, Lynch told a story about inherited cycles of violence and abuse through the metaphor of Leland Palmer’s inheritance of an evil spirit. His own trauma manifests itself in violent and misogynist rampages culminating in the rape and murder of his own daughter and niece.

In The Return, it is retroactively revealed that Sarah Palmer and her possession by a feminine-coded ‘Mother’-type alien creature is the true ‘final boss’, if you will, and that BOB’s existence and behaviour is just one particular instance caused by this greater, more encompassing evil. Leland’s behaviour under the will of BOB is an effect of the Mother. The metaphor here is less clear.

What did David Lynch mean by this?
