Nice, enjoyable, but not mind-numbing niche-y movies for our movie nights

I'm trying to build a watchlist for movie nights with my partner. I'm a movie buff and am quite up to date with cult movies and highly rated independent, "artsy" titles and documentaries, and have my personal watchlist, but when it's time to watch a movie together we always waste an hour trying to find something that may be appealing to both. My partner is less into "film buff" titles and doesn't want to feel sad or anxious from seeing a movie in her free time, but she still appreciates a well-narrated story, credible characters and setting (she's a journalist and writer).

I'd like some recommendations for movies that are enjoyable and make you feel like you spent a nice, not-boring night, but that are also good quality and enriching, so that you don't feel like you wasted two hours watching something really shallow or totally predictable.

I think we already watched or at least know about more famous titles that won awards and were praised by the critique, so here I'm looking for titles that are a bit more niche – like, let's say, in recent years we really liked "Bugonia", "JoJo Rabbit" and "Don't Look Up", but I'm not looking for this kind of big titles here. I hope to discover something I haven't heard of or may have overlooked.

Some examples of movies we really enjoyed watching together and would fall in the category I'm trying to describe are, for reference:

- "Hit the Road" by Panah Panahi
- "The Holdovers" by Alexander Payne
- "Oh Boy" by Jan Hole Gerster
- "Are you there God? I'm Margaret" by Kelly Fremon Craig
- "Fremont" by Babak Jalali
- "Little Forest" by Hwang Seong-ru
- "Beasts of the Southern Wild" by Benh Zeitlin

We're open to any country as you see.

Thanks in advance!

Help with understanding careers

I just reinstalled TE4 after giving it a try last year for a few weeks. I'm having the same frustrations. When I play Beginner or the next level (now I forget the name) and pick a player in the first 100, I win every match 6-0 6-0. I'm now trying Pro level, max sub-level, with a #6 ranked player with every skill between 60 and 98 and I keep on losing 6-0 6-0 any qualifying match with players with half the skills. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I did the tutorials, I play tennis in real life and I think I have a good strategy and positioning, I'm trying everything, not using risky special shots when I'm not in a good position in time, I sometimes resist for long shots, but then the other player just starts placing fast shots on the line one side and then the other and I lose. I may get better in time but I can't see how this could improve and it's not normal to lose every match with a #6 player right?

I'm wondering if there's something on the career level I'm not getting.

For example I see the Experience level is only at 10-20. Does this affect the performance? Should I use Experience points to enhance my different skills or should I let the Experience bar get higher to get better results? Is the career mode meant for you to make the player grow, so even a #6 is not at their best at the start?

None of this is explained in the game and I feel quite lost.

Can someone explain to me what's the best way to go at the beginning without it being too easy like on Beginner and the next level where I was winning with zero struggle, but also not losing every match, and in general how Experience points work and how careers work?

Thank you!

Recommend me some really well-written, engaging quirky indie games please!

I like to alternate "bigger" games with indie ones because I love to discover all the different art styles and quirky ideas that so many creators have to offer. However, lately I've been disappointed by a few titles that were well reviewed on average. I'm going to list my favorite indie games so far, and some of those that I found underwhelming, hoping you can help me navigate titles better in the future.

Loved:

- A Short Hike. Super engaging dialogues, cute characters, nice message but not delivered in a cheesy way, wholesome setting, flawless gameplay even if simple.

- Night in the Woods. Unique design, relatable multi-layered character, great balance of humor and darker narrative.

- Mutazione. Loved the design, from the color palette to the punk art style, all in a vibrant tropical setting. Simple, short, but made me feel immersed in a world that has been masterfully crafted and now kind of exists some parallel reality in my mind.

- Wandersong. The character is just too cute, and the graphics and gameplay are lovely. It's maybe super simple but it's too endearing not to love it for me.

Liked, but maybe not loved:

- Slay the Princess. I appreciated the peculiar gameplay and story development, but didn't find it life-changing like many reviewers, I found it a bit repetitive after some time and I couldn't ignore some good dose of male gaze in the princess's artwork in many frames.

- Abzu. Found it relaxing and enjoyed the graphics, but I was glad it was that short because without dialogues and a real story I felt a bit disconnected from it.

Found underwhelming:

- The First Tree. I just couldn't stand the story with the voiceover and just found it boring despite it having a deep and sensitive topic. The gameplay was so buggy, I felt like I've been robbed of my money even if it was just a few euros. Its average reviews have now dropped on Steam, but I got tricked by them back when I got it.

- Before Your Eyes. Again, similar problem, the story wants to be deep and touching but I just found it incredibly boring. The gameplay could have been interesting, but blinking doesn't actually affect the story flow much as the scenes seem to be created to be cut after a few seconds anyway. I really liked the art style though.

Already own, haven't played yet:

- Wide Ocean Big Jacket. I really like the artwork and the title, I hope it's not going to be a "oh no!" moment like the last 2 titles mentioned above.

- Toem. I actually started this and found it cute and relaxing but I felt a bit stupid, I couldn't find all the things I had to look for, I forgot what the scout guy asked me to photograph and he doesn't repeat it, and being a kind of game I wanted to play to relax and decompress I didn't feel like looking up things online. I may pick it up again though.

- Untitled Goose Game. Read so many great things about it, I hope it will stand the hype.

As you can see I probably like an original, handmade-looking design, endearing characters, and a story that has some nice introspective levels but not a cheesy delivery. I love funny dialogues, witty word choices, sarcasm and in general games that clearly stem from a very creative and unique mind. I'm open to all genres and outside of this specific area of "quirky, arty, small indie games" this post is about, just as a reference, other longer/more narrative games that I really loved are Disco Elysium, The Last of Us, Okami, We Love Katamari.

Thank you for any rec! :)

Is Derek better/worse than After Life?

Hi everyone, I'm an avid TV series fan but somehow I had never gotten into Gervais' work until recently, despite having watched some sketches and several interviews and having the gist of his style and personality.

I just finished watching After Life and I quite liked Season 1, despite some flaws (mainly the caricatural side characters and the unrealistic situations and dialogues) but grew to really dislike Season 2 and 3. I was actually appalled by the low level of writing. Everything was so repetitive and the issues with the side characters grew more and more and it was almost uncomfortable to watch – not for the sarcasm, the dark humor, or the cringe situations, but for the bad writing. Of the dialogues, of the characters, of the main character's arc.

I've had Derek in my backlog for years and now I'm not sure if I should give it a try or are these things typical of all of Gervais' work? Will Derek disappoint me just as much?

Am I missing something or is he overhyped? I find him quite brilliant in his interviews, I share many of his values, and in general I really enjoy British dark humor and find the slang endearing (I'm Italian so it's not my native language), but I could barely believe After Life was a show written by a mature and supposedly experienced writer and that it's from recent years. It felt so old and... I don't know, just bad.

I'm sorry for all the fans, I don't mean to be negative on purpose and this is no meant to be rage bait of any kind, I'm just genuinely curious to understand if maybe I started from the worst of his work or if he is simply just not for me and I should consider myself done with his work.

BTW I haven't watched the Office UK yet, apart from the first 2 episodes.

GW binding + non-GW boot compatibility - Need to make sure the skis I just received just need to be regulated better

[EDIT: solved thanks to a commenter. It just needed A LOT more pressure the first time]

Hi everyone, I just bought my first pair of skis online - been skiing for 30 years but my first were gifted and second bought at a rental/second hand store and regulated there.

I'm not an expert re: boots and bindings for this reason, but I read everywhere that GW bindings are retro-compatible with non-GW boots so I thought I was all good buying GW bindings with my skis.

Got the skis+binding set on Sport Conrad where you can send the sole length measure and they'll regulate the binding accordingly.

I just received the skis and the boot doesn't fit in the binding as it is now. I want to make sure it's just a matter of regulating it a bit better and not a compatibility issue.

- Boots: Dalbello D5 105, bought in winter 2020/2021. No "GW" written anywhere so I suppose they're not. Sole length 308mm.

- Bindings: Salomon M11 GW (came with the S/Max 8 skis)

Im attaching some pictures where you can also see the numbers in the binding's regulation meter.

Unfortunately I have no way to reach a physical ski store or resort anytime soon to have them checked so I hope you can help me understand at least if the bindings should indeed be compatible and it's just a matter of regulating them (I will follow a video tutorial or have someone at a store fix them later in the year) or if I need to return the skis to the online store, which I would need to know right away.

I'm attaching some pictures that I hope can help.

Thank you so much in advance!

I started Not for Broadcast and it's a masterpiece of unique gameplay + British humor

Any fans of Not for Broadcast here? I remember finding out about this game on Reddit but I don't remember if it was here or on another sub. I started it yesterday and it's blowing my mind!

The gameplay is so unique – you are the director of a news channel and need to choose what to air from 4 screens, also jumping from a speaker to the other, while juggling increasing challenges to ensure the audience keeps on watching. All of this happens in a hot political context and you need to make private and personal choices linked to a new totalitarian party and this affects what happens next (I'm still in the first days of the game so I'm not sure about what awaits me).

The thing that I'm loving so much and hadn't read about is that it's full of comedy bits in full British humor mode. Interviews, live reports and ads get increasingly silly and surreal. After a work day, you can access a room where you can replay everything that went on air plus the bits where hosts and guests talked off-air and you missed while focusing on the main audio and it's hilarious. It's like watching a whole comedy mockumentary show within the game.

If any of this sounds appealing to you I really recommend getting it! There are 5 levels of difficulty so you can also choose to enjoy the story without too much stress while you're on air. I'm trying the normal level right now ("Broadcast") and I'm loving the challenge.

▲ 1 r/AMA

I'm a subtitle translator and worked on titles published on all the main streaming platforms. AMA

I worked for more than a decade in translation and mostly in subtitle translation. I published subtitles across Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Paramount+, and also worked for some theatre and DVD releases. I'm also a proofreader/editor.

I'm Italian and work in the English to Italian language pair, so mostly US content, but also third-language content that is translated via English (lots of K-dramas!).

My CD collection! 41F, Italy

I recently found this beautiful subreddit and thought I'd share my CD collection too!

I'm 41 and started collecting CDs when I was 14. They are around 800 in total. I also have some vinyls from my favorite artists, but not too many, since I prefer the practicality of CDs.

There are a few non-originals in there, from the time when we would exchange copies of discs with friends. I think around 25% are non-originals and 75% originals - some bought new back in the day, many from second-hand stores at music markets in Italy or during my trips in the UK and the US.

It's mostly indie-folk-rock, with lots of female songwriters and some indie bands. My taste hasn't changed much over these 30 years.

The first 5 pics are the single different shelves. I keep them in alphabetical order (by last name or band name) and in chronological order within the same artist, just to find them easily. I weirdly have different criteria for ordering CDs, books, and movies. For books, I have them by language/country (Russian+German shelf, British+Irish shelf, American shelf, etc), while I keep DVDs by chronological order. How do you organize your collections?

The bottom shelf of pic #5 is unofficial live bootlegs from my favorite artists, mostly exchanged through the artists' fan message boards back when they were a thing.

Pic #6 has mix CDs made by friends in the 00's on the top shelf, and on the bottom shelf is a part of the CD collection from my uncle, that I kept when he passed away two years ago. I also have his old Sony CD player, connected to my late dad's analog Harmon amplifier and Lenko turntable from the 60s <3.

Pic #7 is a memory of my rough drawings copying the artwork of the original CDs, did any of you do this too?

From #8 on, a few of my autographed CDs from live shows.

I own a collection of about 450 CDs built over the past 20ish years. For various reasons, mainly being temporarily based at my partner's flat where I didn't bring all of my stuff, I stopped buying music for a few years. I also live in Italy where it's not so common to find very good second hand deals.

While spending a few days in London, I took advantage of some great e-bay stores (mainly music magpie and world of books) and filled some gaps in my favorite artists' collection.

Some even came mint and sealed even if sold as "good condition".

One of these is Waxahatchee's record "Cerulean Salt", that is unexpectedly a limited edition also including their first CD "American Weekend".

The other one that brought me particular joy unsealing is Beach House's "Teen Dream", one of my all time faves, with its case and booklet full of colorful graphics and handwritten lyrics.

I missed this feeling <3 Can't wait to be back home and add them to my shelf - in rigorous alphabetical (by artist) + chronological order :))
