Silly tip I just figured out: benches to force paths!

It’s simple. When you plop a bench off a path, villagers will start moving to sit on it and start making their own path. It’s simple and a lot of times much easier than doing the thing where you paint forbidden area.

Probably most people already know about this, but wanted to share just in case!

Mod request: beaver free will!

I think this would add incredibly fun dynamics to the game: the idea is that you can’t ever yell beavers what to do. Instead, their decision making is driven by a single stat which I’m calling Purpose.

Purpose is a critical stat like hunger and thirst. It slowly gains whenever a beaver is actively working or using an entertainment building, drains whenever a beaver is not actually working (idle, commuting, unemployed), and remains unchanged during sleep.

At 80% purpose or less, beavers start taking penalties to their well being. At 30% purpose or less, beavers will choose to use entertainment buildings instead of working. At 0% purpose, beavers become contaminated.

Purpose is compared for every beaver between the start of the workday and the end of the workday. Beavers with less than 50% purpose and/or less purpose at the end of the workday than at the start will move to another empty job.

Migration cannot be managed by the player. Instead, beavers will automatically migrate to a different district if they find a district with an average purpose that is at least 20% higher than their own + a free bed

Newborn folktails will boost the purpose of every beaver in the household to 100%. Newborn Iron Teeth will boost the purpose of every beaver in the district by 5%

Certain consumables give small purpose boosts (books, coffee, for example)

Because of the way this is set up, the player will need to ensure beavers have a short commute, access to amenities near the workplace, and minimal idle time to ensure purpose remains high in the colony. It puts an entire spin on well-being bonuses and makes it more critical towards completing game objectives

I just want to thank this sub

I was scared of spiders my entire life. I couldn’t even be close to a small jumper. I was scared of going outside at night because I couldn’t see well whether spiders could be somewhere. I’d freak out even at photos of spiders in a book.

I also never looked for this subreddit, it sort of stumbled upon my feed for some reason and then decided to stay. Fast forward a couple of years and I have picked up several jumpers, relocated spiders up to a quarter in size, welcomed a female steatoda that now lives in my dining room window, seriously thought about getting a pet tarantula, and just today I finally succeeded in a months long search to find a black widow in the wild - instead of fear I felt only excitement.

I have this sub, and only this sub, to thank for this. Enjoy this mediocre photo of a black widow as evidence of my successes.

Today was supposed to be a good day…

Preface: nothing bad actually happened - I was just thoroughly humbled by a spectacularly chaotic diaper change that ended up taking over an hour, multiple diapers, and a full bath.

I woke up unusually well-rested. Last night, the baby slept peacefully for several hours. He only woke up once to eat, ate quickly and went back to sleep with no fuss. I rejoiced in the wave of energy that flooded my body after being able to enjoy 7 hours of mostly uninterrupted sleep for the first time since he was born. I checked the calendar and smiled to myself before reminding my wife that our baby has just turned 2 weeks old. We settled down in the nursery so I could give him his morning bottle while wife pumped. All was peaceful, and Life was good.

But then the feeding session ended, and the terror began…

It started with the all-too-familiar blue line on the front of the diaper. I set the baby up on the changing table and confirmed that the diaper was free of po as we op. So I grabbed only one wipe, a decision I will regret for the rest of my life.

As I got started, I was surprised to find poop in what 30 seconds ago had been a clean diaper. Not just any poop, too; it was that sticky green one. The one that spreads like gangrene and always finds a way into every wrinkle of the baby’s skin and is a pain to wipe off. Woefully unprepared, I tried to make the best of my one wipe, and against all odds, I was successful. I proudly removed the dirty diaper and placed a clean one under him.

And then, I saw it, the scrotum turned pale. His eyes crossed. His body tensed. A blob of indiscernible sludge blasted out of my firstborn’s butthole like lava exiting an active volcano. I struggled to contain it within the diaper, with only a small amount of success. Every time I thought I had it under control, a new wave of poop would erupt. Then, just when I was most caught up on his behind, he started spitting up.

I rushed to clean the undigested formula off his face and the changing table before it got in this hair, but alas, I was unsuccessful. I decided to make some sacrifices and I tied his diaper back up so I could focus on the spit up clean up. Then, once done with that part, I chose to wait in case the baby’s bowels were getting ready to emit a third salvo.

For 10 minutes I waited, guilt-ridden about letting the heir to my kingdom stew in his own filth, and telling myself it was for the best. Finally, I was convinced it was over. He was relaxed. No strange sounds had come out of his posterior end for quite som time. So I got started with yet another ass clean-up and presented the third diaper. We were finally over the hump, or so I thought.

Right as the third diaper touched his lower back, he gave the order to launch the next phase of his chemical warfare: poison gas. The fart went on for almost 10 seconds, loud enough for my wife and both my dogs to stop what they were doing and stare at the baby in shock. I wondered myself how so much gas could be contained in such a small vessel, but I didn’t have much time to ponder as I was almost immediately gagging and gasping for breath.

Of course, the poison gas was just a distraction - something to keep me entertained right before the final attack, which came in the form of liquids simultaneously spewing out of the baby’s mouth and butt. Having only two hands, I had to clean the spit up first to ensure he was not at risk of choking on himself, which allowed the spawn of his colon to spread and cake his entire lower back in toxic sludge and forced me to have to raise his butt off the changing table for the final cleanup. And triggering the last trap. As soon as his body hit the right angle, the contents of his bladder gushed up his torso and down the sides of his neck, pooling right under his head. Naturally, he was thrashing and screaming bloody murder at this point, which means his entire head got drenched in urine, triggering an emergency bath protocol.

And of course, his cord hasn’t fallen off yet so a tub is out of the question; I had to sponge bathe him, which to him is the equivalent of being waterboarded.

He’s now peacefully sleeping in bed while I try to shake off the trauma of what just happened.

Life is still good though.

Mod fantasy: construction staging building

Here’s a huge QOL upgrade I’d like to see: it’s a versatile building that makes it easier to set up storage for large construction projects so your builders can get materials from close by without you having to place and set up a bunch of different storage buildings.

  1. It comes in small, medium, and large. Small has a size of 1x1 and a coverage area of 3x3. Medium is 2x2 and has a coverage of 4x4. Large is 3x3 and covers 5x5. Storage capacities are 10, 100 and 1000.

  2. It can hold any construction material. Small can only hold one material type at a time. Medium can hold 3, and large can hold 7.

  3. It automatically finds all construction sites within its coverage area and calculates the total cost for the construction. It then automatically sets itself to receive the material types that are needed the most.

  4. It is set by default to obtain resources from other storage buildings and prioritized by haulers. Once materials are dumped into the staging area, they fall off your inventory and can only be used for construction.

  5. It only accepts the amount of materials needed for construction and no more than that (meaning you can’t use it as a regular storage building). If for some reason construction concludes/is canceled and there are materials still in storage, it behaves as rubble and can be returned to inventory by builders.

  6. It disintegrates after a week if it remains empty and/or doesn’t have any construction sites in its coverage area.

  7. If there is a tubeway/zipline station inside its coverage area, all construction within 3x3 of the other stations in the network are also covered (meaning you can build a staging area at a tubeway station and use it to build the entire tubeway network)

Pre-labor-friendly things to feed my wife that won’t make her miserable?

5 days to due date.

Wife is not in labor yet but it could happen any time. She’s already dilating, mucus plug is gone, and practice contractions are in full swing since 2 weeks ago. The problem is she doesn’t want to eat anything because everything she eats makes her feel sick (thankfully no vomiting but she feels miserable after eating).

So, former pre-dads and lurker moms, what are your best suggestions for healthy and friendly foods to give my wife during this trying time?

I think it could make a great dynamic change for the game, mainly because it would actually make districts make sense but also because it would introduce a very interesting layer of complexity. Maybe I'm talking crazy but I think this would make the game insanely good. I have no idea how the game files are set up, so no clue whether this is possible without a major rewrite of the whole game, but here are my ramblings if anyone wants to read them:

  1. The max well-being is increased to the total of unique well-being stats between both factions. Well-being bonuses are adjusted accordingly.

  2. To win the game you need to build and launch both wonders

  3. Beavers can migrate to a district of a different faction. A beaver is local if it lives in a district of its own faction, and foreign if it lives in a district of the other faction.

  4. You can build foreign buildings in a district, but they can only be built by foreign beavers. Builder posts can be set to only employ local/foreign beavers. Science is faction-specific.

  5. Beavers cannot work unique buildings of the other faction, and they cannot use the other faction's accelerated transports. Production buildings cannot be worked by a beaver that is not of the faction of the item being produced. (Note: Beavers can farm, gather, and cut from any resource regardless of faction, but keep in mind that farmhouses are faction-unique buildings)

  6. Foreign beavers gain 5% homesickness per day and local beavers lose 20% homesickness per day. When a foreign beaver consumes a unique good from its faction, homesickness stops increasing for 6 hours. A beaver loses half its well-being at 50% homesickness and refuses to work at 100% homesickness. The only cure is to send it back home (which can be automated via migration rules)

  7. Housing buildings and breeding pods cannot be connected to a district of the opposite faction. (Note: This means that foreign beavers cannot reproduce). Beavers can sleep in any lodging regardless of faction.

  8. You pick your initial faction at game start. The next district center you build is automatically of the other faction and automatically spawns the same number of beavers that you started the game with. After that, you are free to choose the faction for any new district.

  9. If all beavers of one faction die, it is game over. Big Note: FT beavers can maintain breeding pods, so if all your IT die, you might still have a chance to turn it around.

  10. (This one is harder because it needs new buildings and materials so I'm calling it a bonus): Each faction has a unique construction material that is highly expensive: Folktails have bricks (made in Kilns, cost is 1 dirt, 1 extract, 5 log, consumes 800 power) and Iron Teeth have Alloy Blocks (Made in Foundries, cost is 1 metal block, 1 extract, 5 log, consumes 800 power). Monument costs are updated so that they need to be built with these unique materials. Tier 2 & 3 monuments use unique materials from their respective factions, but tier 4 monuments (wonders) use unique materials from both factions. This means that both factions need to be nearing endgame for you to be even thinking of building monuments.

I’ve come to learn that I’m able to lie down in specific positions where if I don’t move at all, I won’t fall asleep no matter what. I can leverage this position with a timer to get a good 20-30 minutes of deep rest without actually ever falling asleep.

The positions that do this for me are basically lying down face up with my legs completely straight or crossed at the ankle, hands together and resting on my stomach, and head tilted slightly up. I can also do it sitting on a chair with my head rested back and my hands on my knees. I’ll assume the position, set the timer, do some slow breath work and then just close my eyes. Time flies pretty quickly and then the timer goes off and I’m rested and ready to keep going.

While I’m doing this, I will notice my muscles getting heavier and my mind sinking into this sort of deep pondering trance-like state, but I’m very noticeably still conscious and able to control my thoughts. The thing I find fascinating is that I’ve never been able to fall asleep like this. I’ve tried hundreds of times to go to sleep at night in this position and 100% of the time I’ll remain conscious until I get so frustrated/bored after 30-60 minutes that I end up switching to a position I can fall asleep in.

And since I keep learning that basically everything that defines me is almost certainly yet another ADHD symptom, I’m here to ask the greater population. Any of you have this too?

Also, if you’ve never tried this, I suggest you do. It feels like an instant rest hack for me. If you struggle with it at first you can grab some headphones and play a Yoga Nidra video by Ally Boothroyd of the duration that best meets your schedule
