Daggerheart Environment Tier 1+ Story Seeds - Divine Feast

Art by me! Another Daggerheart environment and story seeds for you, folks! Hope you like em!

Text Version:

Divine Feast

Tier 1 Daggerheart Environment

Tier 1 Exploration
A rich feast table set for giants.

Impulses: gluttonous consumption, polite reflection.

___
Difficulty: 11
Potential Adversaries: Giant Rat, Guards (Bladed, Archer, Head)
____

FEATURES

Made Much Larger - Passive:  PCs need to make Agility Rolls to make significant elevation changes, as there are no stairs or handholds intended for people their size; any motion requiring an Agility Roll normally performed here suffers disadvantage unless the environment is used creatively.

How do the PCs get on the table in the first place?  How sturdy is the food underfoot?

Sea of Rats - Action: Spend a Fear.  Unleash four times as many Giant Rats as there are PCs; they descend to eat everything on offer, PCs included.  This summons the Hand.

How are the Giant Rats moving around, and could the party travel via the same means?  What finally set them off?

The Hand - Reaction: A giant figure, incomprehensible in nature, is sitting eating.  Whenever a creature disturbs the food or a PC Rolls with Fear while out of hiding, the hand descends—dealing 1d10+2 damage to all within Very Close of the source of the disturbance.

Who, or what, is this giant?  Do the PCs know?  Do they want to?  Can they?

Story Seeds

Hall of the Mountain King
A giant who dwells within a tall mountain is known to hoard lavish wealth from across the lands—surely he wouldn’t notice a little going missing?  A trip looking for a treasure vault turns to a lunge to the larder as they navigate this too-large landscape, however, and finally they find themselves on a giant’s table set for a feast.

Are the PCs here to rob the giant?  Confront him?  Get something specific that they or a contact has a right to?

Cruel Shade of Size
The party has offended, wittingly or otherwise, a goddess of vindictive justice.  Passing under an awning’s shade at a crooked angle, they find themselves suddenly much shrunk.  Through happenstance, they quickly find themselves on a table set for dinner.  They need to figure out how to appease the goddess, regain their former size, and avoid getting squished or eaten by rats—all at once!

Who is this deity?  What did the party do to offend her?  What can be done to break her curse if she can’t be convinced to do so herself?  What could make amends for their transgression?

How I draw my maps

Just wanted to share how I draw my maps! This is a Procreate timelapse. I started the sketch in photoshop, which is why you don't see the sketch being drawn. I use Photoshop for the sketch because it has a better grid, and Lazy Nazumi makes it easier to draw straight lines and circles (though there aren't really any straight lines or circles in this map heh).

Dragon Quarters - Mega Dungeon Part 6 [25x25]

I've been working on my Mega Dungeon set since the end of last year, and I plan to continue adding tiles to this set for the unforeseeable future. Lately, I've been dedicating time to more boss-like rooms with more space that would allow for a larger battle. This is tile #6, and I have 5 more in the series.

Daggerheart Environment Tier 1+ Story Seeds - Teal-Heart Inn

Art by me!

Text version:

Teal-Heart Inn

Tier 1 Daggerheart Environment

Tier 1 Social
A pleasant roadside inn that offers a warm bed and a dark corner to sleep and scheme.

Impulses: Bring people together for opportunity, shelter the wary.

___
Difficulty: 10
Potential Adversaries: Merchant, Petty Noble, Mercenaries (Harrier, Sellsword, Spellblade, Weaponmaster)
____

FEATURES

Libations & Luxuriations - Passive: A PC can choose to take a load off and have a good time.  They can choose one of the following to do, and then clear a Stress:

  • Spend 1 coin to have a nice drink at the bar.
  • Rest on the chaise lounge by the fire.
  • Gossip with merchants and mercenaries.

What trouble do they get into relaxing?

High Stakes Game - Passive: A PC can partake in a high-stakes game of chance with a Presence or Instinct Roll.  They must put up 1 bag full of gold or a magic item to play; they earn 1d4 bags of gold on a success (2d4 if critical), and lose that 1 bag of gold or item on a failure—as well as marking 1 Stress.

What happens if the PC’s not really good for it and loses?  Who might they meet at this table?  What game are they playing?

For a Few Handfuls More - Passive: A PC may approach some of the loitering mercenaries in the tavern (as per Potential Adversaries) and make a Presence roll to hire them on as a temporary Companion.  On a critical success, it costs 1 handful of gold; on a success, 2; and on a failure with Hope, 3. They won’t take the job on a failure with Fear.

What does this mercenary know?  Why have they washed up here seeking employment?

“It’s Them!” - Action: Spend a Fear to have a group of Mercs move in on the party—someone has paid them to ensure the party doesn’t check out tonight.

Who hired the mercenaries?  Do they have the right group?  Are they open to counter-offers?

Story Seeds

See a Man About a Bag
Infamous swindler Rupert Two-Tones has a magic bag, and your employers need it back.  He’s at the Teal-Heart under an alias, and if you don’t grab him tonight, he’ll be gone.

What’s in the bag?  What IS the bag?

Shady Recruiter
The armies of darkness have more hired muscle than normal—you hear they’re recruiting mercs at the Teal Heart.

Will the party pose as mercs?  Is the recruiter in the open or concealed?

Daggerheart Environment Tier 2+ Story Seeds - Blade Root Sanctum

Art by me!

Hi everyone! I am back with another environment and 2 story seeds!

Blade Root Sanctum

Tier 2 Daggerheart Environment

Tier 2 Event
A verdant sanctum of deep green flora and ancient stones.

Impulses: Purify the land with death, bind together the faithful in bloodshed.

___
Difficulty: 14
Potential Adversaries: Assassins (Apprentice, Poisoner, Master)
____

FEATURES

Homefield Advantage - Passive: These zealous assassins have trained in this temple and woven its stones with the magic in the roots and their blood for generations; reduce the PC’s Hope Die to a d10 here.  This effect ends when 50% (rounded down) of enemies are defeated, or they complete a Countdown Clock (6 parts).

How much of this advantage is magical, and how much mundane? Are the party gaining confidence, shattering the enemy’s zeal, unweaving illusions, or simply learning the land?  A mix of all?

Enter the Assassins - Action: A group of Assassins led by a Master Assassin with two Poisoners and twice as many Apprentices as there are PCs appear.

Are they here to remove the party swiftly, or was their presence here part of the group’s plans all along?

“We Knew You’d Do That” - Reaction: When a PC moves to a space no PC has entered before, spend 1 Fear to unleash a poisonous spike trap on them.  They must pass an Agility roll or suffer 1d10 damage that armor cannot defend against.

What sort of poison slicks these traps?  Do they have an identifiable, avoidable trigger mechanism?

Story Seeds

Daughters’ Requiem
They speak in hushed tones of the Daughters of the Blade Root. Once, this order of assassins struck fear in the hearts of every noble and warlord.  But they have retreated, grown insular. People scoffed at their religion.  But now bodies are dropping with the hallmarks of these professionals, and their former customers are coming to a very horrible realization—their killings are personal now.  And there’s no one to hold them back.

Have the Daughters killed someone close to the PCs?  Do they have the same enemies?  What is the ultimate goal of this killing spree?

The Last Apprentice
The assassin’s latest apprentice wants out—and only the party can help.

How’d they get recruited?  Who hired the party?  And what aren’t they telling them?

Daggerheart Environment Tier 1+ Story Seeds - Mechanist's Miasma

This is a steampunk-themed environment! A first for us! Hope you like it! Art by me.

Text Version:

Mechanist’s Miasma

Tier 1 Daggerheart Environment

Tier 1 Exploration
Brass and bronze cloaked in white, hot steam.

Impulses: Conceal, heat, create, obscure.

___
Difficulty: 11
Potential Adversaries: Construct
____

FEATURES

Terrible Miasma - Passive: Any time a character that needs to breathe or can be hurt by hot air moves through a misty part of the map or moves further than Very Near in a round, they must make an Agility roll against Difficulty (11).  On a failure, they mark 1 Stress.

Is it the heat, some poison, or a combination of both that makes the air here deadly?  What can the party do to overcome or nullify this danger?  How can this defense turn to a hazard, should they fail or succeed, with Fear?

Enter the Construct - Action: Spend a Fear to have the Construct emerge; it immediately detects motion as the sign of intruders.  And intruders are to be dealt with.

Is this machine malfunctioning, or doing exactly as it was told?  Does it want to capture or destroy the intruders?  Can it be reasoned with, or is it a simpler mind?  Can it be tricked?  Why does it still work after all this time?

Story Seeds

Limb of Last Resort
An individual dear to the party is in need of a rare replacement prosthetic, crafted by alchemy unknown in these lands, and they need it today.  It is said that the old Mechanist’s Lair holds both deadly miasma and wondrous objects.  Only the party can go in and out in time, with any hope of surviving, to bring this piece back to their friend before they expire.

Why was a place that once made tools to help turned over to the guardianship of a dangerous machine?  What happened to the person making the prosthetics?

Home is Where the Metal Heart Is
A Clank PC or Companion/significant NPC has learned that their mysterious creation happened at a place known as the Mechanist’s Lair.  The place is said to be cloaked in scalding, deathly airs and be the site of a great and miserable mystery... but you’d do anything to help them find their answers, wouldn’t you?

What were they created for?  How much do they already know, and how much of that are they willing to admit—to the party or themselves?  Were they truly created here?  Why has it become a place of danger rather than creation?

Text Version:

The Proving Pyre

Tier 1 Daggerheart Environment

Tier 1 Event
An arena wreathed in fire, awaiting combatants.

Impulses: Burn up, destroy, temper, heat up.

___
Difficulty: 11
Potential Adversaries: Minor Fire Elemental, Minor Chaos Elemental, Minor Demon
____

FEATURES

Fire Rises - Passive: Whenever a PC takes a hit within Very Close Range of an open fire pit, they must make an Agility roll—on failure, they suffer 4d8 direct physical damage.

Are there traps and triggers around the arena to bring out even more fire and remove what safe space remains?  Is the fire rising?

Enter the Flame - Action: Introduce a Minor Fire Elemental to the arena, which proceeds to attack the PCs.

How many of them are there?  Is this a battle to the death, or is the elemental being reformed?

Burst of Flame - Reaction: When a Minor Fire Elemental is destroyed, spend 1 Fear to force a Fire Rises roll on every PC as fire fans up and licks around the floor and walls.

What unseen hand moves the fire?  Is there a mechanical force blowing like a bellows below, or is the release of magic from the elemental’s destruction bringing the fire upwards?

Story Seeds

Captive Audience
The PCs found themselves on the trail of fiery mystery and intrigue—and then found themselves thrown down here.  Whatever magical conspiracy is behind this, they’re going to need to survive the Proving Pyre before they can solve it.

How does this place relate to the PCs’ backgrounds?  How were they captured, or were they led here instead?  What secrets does the Proving Pyre itself hold?

Summoning Gone Wrong
The PCs needed to summon an elemental to gain important knowledge—but this spot was necessary to bring the right one forth.  Now, things have gotten out of hand, and they’re going to need to douse their invitee’s fiery ambitions before they can have a chat with them.

How did they learn how to summon this elemental?  What does it know in particular that will help on their quest?  Did anyone else know this was going to lead to a fight?
