‘Bernal,’ an upcoming feature film on the life and works of National Artist Ishmael Bernal, with a screenplay by Ricky Lee, is now in the works

Bernal is an upcoming feature film written by National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Ricky Lee, based on the life and body of work of National Artist and acclaimed filmmaker Ishmael Bernal.

One of the most influential directors in Philippine cinema, Bernal directed landmark films such as Himala, Manila by Night, Nunal sa Tubig, Relasyon, Ikaw Ay Akin, and many other classics that helped define the Second Golden Age of Philippine Cinema.

“Very excited ako na finally itong matagal ko nang binalak na material o script ay matutuloy na,” says National Artist Ricky Lee.

Blending biographical storytelling with magical realism and a fresh reinterpretation of the traditional biopic, Bernal brings together the people who shaped Bernal's film journey, from the actors he directed to the collaborators and family who surrounded him. The film features an impressive ensemble of stellar cast portraying some of the most iconic figures in Philippine cinema.

Three actors will portray the role of Ishmael Bernal's, with Jericho Rosales taking on one of the key portrayals.

The cast also includes Judy Ann Santos in the role of Nora Aunor and Elsa, the iconic character from Himala; Atom Araullo as Spanky Manikan and Orly from Himala; Iza Calzado as actress Rita Gomez; and John “Sweet” Lapus as Bernardo Bernardo.

The film will also feature portrayals of iconic artists from the Second Golden Age of Philippine Cinema, including Vilma Santos, Eddie Garcia, Alma Moreno, Lorna Tolentino, and many others who worked closely with Bernal. These roles will be brought to life by celebrated actors such as Chanda Romero, Lovi Poe, Shaina Magdayao, Agot Isidro, and more.

More than a biographical film, Bernal is being produced as a cinematic tribute, not only to Ishmael Bernal, but also to the film industry and to the National Artists who shaped its history. Alongside Bernal, the film honors icons and National Artists including Ricky Lee, Nora Aunor, and Marilou Diaz-Abaya, all of whom appear as characters in the story.

This project is being developed by Epicmedia and Ricky Lee’s Kahon Collective Inc., which continues to support the production of Ricky Lee's long-awaited film projects. Bernal, one of Ricky’s long-completed and most anticipated screenplays, now finally moves toward pre-production.

Aside from his upcoming films, Ricky Lee is also completing his newest book and scriptwriting manual, Trip to Quiapo 2, which is set to launch during Cinemalaya 2026 and the Manila International Book Fair 2026.

Alex Eala opens up about the athletes who inspired her, the Filipino pride and her message to the young dreamers

Alex Eala says she associates a lot of her childhood memories with Manny Pacquiao, ‘When he would have fights, it would really be like holidays in the Philippines. We would gather and we would watch his fights. People would call off work’

“You’ve spoken a lot about Rafa Nadal’s influence on you. But I’m curious about the Filipino athletes you maybe looked up to?”

Alex: “Of course the kind of national hero in sports in the Philippines is Manny Pacquiao. He is the kind of first global athletic figure from the Philippines who I can remember and associate a lot of my childhood memories with. When he would have fights, it would really be like holidays in the Philippines. We would gather and we would watch his fights. And it would be, like, people would call off work. It would really be event. He is someone super inspiring as an athlete.”

Alex: “In recent years, Hidilyn Diaz, who won the first Olympic gold medal for the Philippines is a huge inspiration. That moment was incredible. Of course Carlos Yulo in the most recent Olympics won two gold medals. Amazing. EJ Obiena is the pole vaulter. He’s a good friend of my family and he likes tennis. So yeah there are so many people. I feel like the Filipinos have such great work ethic. We are really hard workers. When it counts, we can show up.”

Alex Eala on what it means to her to inspire young girls and women in the Philippines, ‘I don’t want them to look at me & say, I want to be the next Alex Eala. I want them to look at me and say, Wow, I want to be the first me’

“You have the opportunity to be a role model for women and girls in the Philippines. What could that mean or what does that mean already?”

Alex: “It’s an honor to be able to pave the way for young girls. It would be the honor of my life to be able to inspire others. Inspiration is such a beautiful thing. But then again, I want to remind anybody that you can take inspiration from anywhere you want. Anywhere, anyone. If you want to be inspired and if you’re inspired by it, it will just come to you. I try to be as authentic as I can. I believe in being genuine and I believe in my values. This platform I have has really allowed me to self reflect. It allows me to become the best version of myself. Because I know a lot of people look up to me. But then again I think the main message here is that I don’t want them to look at me and say ‘I want to be the next Alex Eala.’ I want them to look at me and say ‘Wow. I want to be the first me. I want to make my own path.’”

Alex Eala on why the Filipino community is so supportive, ‘I think we’re just really proud of where we come from. We’re a community that uplifts each other’

“This is about the Filipino fan culture… we see some Filipino fans really outweigh fans from any other nationality by quite a lot. Is there something about Filipino culture that means this is sort of exacerbated? I think it’s beyond tennis. It’s in music, boxing, it’s in all fields.”

Alex: “I think we’re just really proud of where we come from. We have a really strong sense of community. You can see it when someone does well. We’re a community that uplifts each other. We’re quite positive people. When positive things happen to other Filipinos around the world we kind of share the enjoyment and share in the happiness. That’s how I see it.”

Kris Aquino proudly shares that Bimby gave ₱20K for his Kuya Josh’s clothes and still went to work despite feeling unwell

“He had an upset tummy but never showed his coworkers,” kuwento ni Kris kay Dindo.

“He gave me ₱20K for my GCash so I could buy clothes for his Kuya from Manfinity Plus Size (from those unaware that’s a brand from SHEIN for larger men),” ayon kay Kris.

“Sobrang responsible, he knows I want to remodel our home in Alto (our compound in Tarlac) and get him and his Kuya a larger SUV.”

“That’s our family of 3, we love each other and share expenses when we have a larger goal.”

Olivia Rodrigo wears her "Pambansang Pinsan" title with honor and pride as she embraces Pinoy fans

Filipino-American singer Olivia Rodrigo is currently promoting her third studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, and says seeing fans embrace the project has been "such an honor" after spending years carefully creating it.

Rodrigo shared that the album gave her more creative control than ever before, adding that as she has grown older, she has become more confident in her artistic vision. Compared to her previous albums, SOUR and GUTS, she believes pretty sad reflects greater emotional maturity and introspection.

She also looked back fondly on her 2024 Manila benefit concert, where tickets were sold at a low price and all proceeds were donated to charity. Rodrigo called it one of her favorite shows, describing the Filipino audience as one of the most beautiful and welcoming crowds she has ever performed for.

“pretty sad’” was released last June 12, the same day as the Philippine Independence Day celebration, and Rodrigo said she has always been and will continue to be proud to be a Filipino.

“I am so proud to be Filipino,” she said. “Everyone in the Philippines is just so warm, and so encouraging, and so loving. I just take their love with me everywhere I go.”

And for the first time, she reacted to the title given to her by her Filipino fans as the “pambansang pinsan” (national cousin) for her deep appreciation and love for the Filipino culture.

“I love it. I love it so much. I'll take it. That’s amazing. Wow. I wear that with honor and pride. That's amazing,” she said.

‘you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love’ is already out and available for streaming and download on all digital platforms.

REYNANG INA! Kris Bernal and Chariz Solomon named as ambassadresses of Mrs. Universe Philippines 2026

The two Sparkle stars were recognized during the event held June 28, at The Tent City Manila Hotel for representing the pageant's advocacy of empowering married women and mothers who continue to pursue their passions while balancing family life.

Bernal, who welcomed her first child, daughter Hailee Lucca, with husband Perry Choi in August 2023, has frequently shared how motherhood has transformed her perspective while continuing to juggle acting, business and family responsibilities.

Solomon, meanwhile, is a mother of three boys and has often spoken about raising her children alongside her career in show business. Following the ceremony, the actress-comedian reflected on the recognition in a heartfelt Instagram post, thanking the pageant organization, her Sparkle family, colleagues, loved ones and glam team.

"It was a night of beauty, love, appreciation, and a 24-inch waistline. It was literally breathtaking, everyone," Solomon wrote.

She said the recognition was especially meaningful because it was made possible by her family.

"Once again, I want to thank the Mrs. Universe organization for this recognition. And of course, I wouldn't truly be qualified for this if not for my children and their father. I love you, family!" she said as translated to English.

Solomon also shared a message of encouragement for fellow mothers, saying that becoming a mother should never mean giving up on one's dreams.

"Thank You, God, for creating a platform that recognizes mothers. Your dreams do not end when you become a mother. Are there fewer opportunities? Yes—but the most extraordinary ones are handpicked for you. Mabuhay ang mga INA! (Long live all mothers)" she wrote.

The pageant also crowned Fatima Figueroa Alvarez of Pampanga as Mrs. Universe Philippines 2026.

Habang noong Mayo 13 nang tuluyang tumakas si Dela Rosa matapos magkaroon ng tensyon sa pagitan ng National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) at tauhan ng Office of Sergeant-At-Arms (OSAA).
