[Seiko SPB121] My first watch, so proud to own what was once a dream ⛰️⌚️

Hello, fellow watch enthusiasts!

As of now, I'm a proud owner of an absolute dream watch I’ve been eyeing for a long time: the classic green-and-gold Alpinist (SPB121).

To be completely honest, I feel beyond spoiled to have this piece of art as my first ever watch. I’ve been deep in the horological rabbit hole for a while now, specifically over mechanical movements and design choices, but I had never owned a proper watch of my own.

With my 18th birthday coming up, my parents originally planned to surprise me with a MoonSwatch. They know I hate surprises and prefer choosing my own gear, so my mom first pitched the idea to me. I immediately aborted mission. I don't know how you guys feel but the MoonSwatch is a cheap, plasticky, overpriced marketing gimmick and a hype toy. Instead, we hit the shops in town specifically scouting for the Alpinist. The moment I put it on my wrist, I knew I was done.

The reason the Alpinist ruins almost every other watch for me is that it refuses to play by standard corporate design rules. It doesn't look like a copy-paste vintage dive watch clone or a sterile, boring luxury circle. No matter what category you try to force it into, the absolute elegance and distinct design language stand completely alone for me, and many others as this watch seems to be a cult classic. Also the specs on top of each other are insane, especially the sapphire glass.

That dynamic sunburst green dial, the gold indices, and those cathedral hands make me unable to turn my head away from the watch for more than 5 minutes. I feel like I've completely bypassed the "entry-level taste trap." I didn't have to buy four generic budget watches to realize what real design integrity looks like and I'm really grateful for that. This watch made me realize more than ever why enthusiasts take watch collecting so seriously. It has a permanent spot in my collection, and I couldn't be prouder to wear it. Cheers to all my newly found alpinist brothers. ⛰️🍻

I created flags for my University based on it's Logo & Crest

Hey everyone. I got bored and wanted to channel my excitement for university into something creative. I thought that uni flags are not something that are talked about often enough in the world of flags. However, many unis around the world still decide to fly flags with their logos or other symbols on them, the vast majority of them being on white backgrounds. So I thought why not actually have flags for universities instead of simply flying icons?

A bit of coat of arms history in this paragraph: Loughborough is a top 10 UK university in the heart of England. It got it's coat of arms from the College that resides next to the uni, which features the St. George cross on a black shield, with 4 different symbols. The coat of arms was then changed completely when the uni adapted it (as seen in the second attached picture), turning the cross into the university color of purple, adding a thunderbolt symbol and a lamp of learning symbol in the center, and choosing to retain Offa's symbol for some reason. Both coat of arms' also feature a peacock on it. I don't know the exact reasoning and historical significance behind all the symbols, but I think they are supposed to represent the university's general motives in teaching, for example, the thunderbolt is said to represent the university's association with technology and innovation. So the other symbols must have similar meanings attached to them.

What I did was basically download .svg files of both the logo and the coat of arms and then take the individual symbols, edit them, and basically flatten the whole thing into a flag. I did some optical correction on both flags to ensure that the visual hierarchy had the exact same feeling as before. I wanted to especially retain the same look the original designs had since I was more intrigued by protecting the reputation attached to these symbols while simultaneously make them so that they feel like they were designed for flags. Obviously the way most crests are designed is very suitable for these purposes but for this one specifically I like how it just feels like looking at the same icon but it also feels like this was specifically designed to be a flag. I just imagine these being flown in football matches between unis to support the team.

If any of you have another uni seals or coat of arms that you like, this is a sign to go and turn them into flags so we don't get awkward white flags with logos stitched onto them. About time we declare war against all bad flag designs!

The flag of Australia if Scotland was a sovereign nation during the British Empire era

The scots within the British Empire had a major role in the colonization and development of Australia, with leaders of the time like lachlan macquarie being from scotland etc. So if the scots were an independent country that were doing their own thing the same time as Britain, maybe they would've gotten to Australia first and colonized it under Scotland and we would have a flag looking something like this. A 2 colored Australian flag is not a bad idea tbh.

Cope cope cope sahur ✌️🫩

social media doomerism at its finest. It's more sad for the people seeing posts like these and believing it to be some catastrophic tragedy for themselves. This is actual braindead propaganda.
