middleeasteye.netIsrael strikes Beirut’s southern suburbs days after ceasefire agreement
BEIRUT — Israel struck the southern Beirut suburbs on Sunday just days after a ceasefire agreement in Washington went into effect.
The strikes come after the Lebanese and Israeli governments in Washington renewed a ceasefire agreement in ongoing talks that Beirut hopes will bring an end to the war across the country. There was no immediate word of casualties.
Israel had already struck the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital twice since the first agreement between Lebanon and Israel went into effect on April 17. Strikes over southern Lebanon continue daily, meanwhile, and Hezbollah fighters and Israeli troops have also clashed.
Hasan Piker’s Ban Is Just the Tip of the Iceberg
On Monday, the British government revoked the travel visas of leftist streamers Hasan Piker and Cenk Uygur, who had planned to speak at SXSW London and at other venues around the country.
Both Piker and Uygur were told that their presence was “not conducive to the public good.” It is widely assumed that they were targeted for their vocal criticism of Israel and support for Palestine.
Britain’s Israel lobby had campaigned for this exact outcome. Last week, a group of MPs and concerned citizens called on Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood to ban Piker in particular, claiming he is an antisemite who would pose a threat to the UK’s Jewish community still reeling from recent attacks in northwest London.
But it’s clear from the lobby’s convenient omission of Piker’s 2025 speech at the Oxford Union condemning antisemitism and the conflation of Zionism and Judaism that this travel ban has nothing to do with the safety of the Jewish community. Rather, this act of cowardly capitulation is part of the Labour government’s rapidly accelerating crackdown on expression that is critical of Israel and supportive of Palestine—an effort that is both facilitating the UK’s ongoing complicity in the genocide in Gaza and destroying the country’s own institutions from the inside out.
Voormalig ICC-aanklager: Israël intimideerde me, Nederland deed niets
Indonesia’s foreign minister didn’t defend the flotilla detainees. He defended Israel’s language
Following a meeting with Commission I of Parliament in Jakarta on May 20, Foreign Minister Sugiono insisted that the detention of Indonesian citizens aboard the Sumud flotilla should not be described as “kidnapping” or “hostage-taking.”
>“This is not a case of kidnapping or hostage-taking,” Sugiono said. “This is a case of a humanitarian aid ship being intercepted because Israel prohibits any ship from entering the area.”
Nine Indonesians — four journalists and five activists — were detained by Israel.
And yet the Indonesian government’s first instinct was not outrage, not legal protest, not an uncompromising defense of its citizens, but the policing of language considered too harsh toward Israel. It was disgraceful.
99% of Jewish-American Organizations Are Zionist
For a rough estimate of how dominant Zionism is among Jewish organizations, I carried out an analysis of the Wikipedia category page for ‘Jewish organizations based in the United States.’ As of April 2026, the page lists approximately 487 organizations in this category and its sub-categories. It should be noted that not every organization is explicitly marked as pro-Israel on Wikipedia, so a deeper analysis required reviewing each one individually.
Out of the 487 organizations investigated, 458 had sufficient publicly available information to determine their stance on Zionism/Israel. Of those 458, 454 organizations (99%) can be classified as Zionist. This includes Liberal Zionist organizations that may make token references to Palestinians or two-state solutions; even excluding those, the proportion remains at approximately 90% of all organizations with clear stances. To put it another way: only 4 organizations out of 458 with sufficient information could be classified as non-Zionist or critical of Israel.
The remaining 29 organizations had no stated stance, insufficient information available, or no discernible relationship to pro-Israel groups. Including organizations with unknown stances, the minimum proportion of Zionist organizations among all 487 is 93% (454/487).
