[In progress] [10k] [YA/ contemporary fantasy] title not decided

Hi! I’m looking for beta readers for the first six chapters of a YA fantasy novel I’m currently working on.

The story follows Raina Crawford, a fifteen-year-old girl who discovers that the occult rituals she’s been trying from the internet may actually work. After her father’s death, she moves from New York to rural Oregon to live with his old friends and their daughter, Ivy. Not long after arriving, Raina learns that her parents belonged to a hidden magical society—and that she may be a witch herself.

What I’m most interested in is honest reader reaction: whether the characters feel engaging and believable, whether the pacing works, whether the magical world feels interesting, and most importantly, whether you’d genuinely want to keep reading etc

If you’re interested, feel free to comment or DM me. I can send the chapters.

Would it cause any issues for future publishing if I post the first few chapters on ao3?

I’ve only ever written fanfiction, and I’m a novice writer trying to write my first original fantasy story now. I’ve outlined the main plot and finished about two chapters. But I’ve realized I have a problem: I’m a bit lazy, so if I don't upload a chapter somewhere right after writing it, I lose the drive to write.

Would it cause any issues for future publishing if I post the first few chapters on AO3?

Plus, if it causes any issues, then can you tell me your way how to keep writing without losing motivation?

Any girl names with an edgy teen vibe?

Nothing too unique or trying too hard to be cool, just common names you see around. Like the ones where there are about three girls with that name in every grade.

How does Cerus sound like?

Is this name too odd for a typical side character? The female lead's ordinary looking friend (female) is hiding a secret, and I was thinking of making her name an anagram for 'curse.' Does that sound too blatantly suspicious? ( I'm not native English user)

I need tips for writing chaotic villain character

Chaotic villains usually have a playful, unpredictable, and non-serious personality, even when they're doing terrible things. Their humor and chaotic energy seem to be a huge part of what makes them memorable. If I create a chaotic villain who speaks seriously all the time instead of constantly joking around, would that take away from the unique charm people usually associate with this type of character?

Originally, I have tried making my villain more playful, (because I love Bill cipher and Joker) but later changed my plan to mother- like villain. She's a chaotic villain who appears to be a gentle and caring mother or older sister. She is polite, patient, and comforting on the surface, but she is also capable of committing horrifying acts with light compassion.

I want her to feel unpredictable and unsettling rather than loud or eccentric.

Because of that, I'm having trouble figuring out whether a consistently serious or gentle character could still be perceived as a chaotic villain, or if readers would find that kind of villain attractive.

I'd really appreciate any tips on writing this kind of character without making her feel forced, overly edgy, or inconsistent. If you know of any books, movies, TV shows, or games with similar villains, I'd love some recommendations as well.

I'm worried my fantasy YA novel comes across as a Harry Potter knockoff.

I'm planning to write a slow-burn YA novel about an 11-year-old female lead attending an all-girls witch academy.

I'm worried that although there are unique elements (the school system and atmosphere and worldbuilding are different, and it mainly focuses on romance and friendship between female students), I'm worried people will instantly think it's a Harry Potter rip-off as soon as they see '11 years old' and 'magic school'. Should I change her age or the setting to something other than a school, like village or something??

Plus, I've tried outlining a pure all-girls school setting(focusing completely on female friendships, jealousy, and sapphic romance) versus having a neighboring boys' school(where they can become friends with and date the guys as well, but final route will be female.) or co-ed class with few guys and many girls, but I'm still torn

+Adding a note since many people misunderstood: The characters were originally 11 years old and were meant to develop a lesbian romance as they grew older. However, thanks to comments and advice, I have decided to change their starting age to 14.

Does Eric and Erik sounds different?

Since I'm from a non-English speaking country, I'm not really sure—do 'Eric' and 'Erik' sound different or carry different vibes? Is 'Erik' a bit more unique? If not, how common are those names? (Because I have to imagine myself dating Erik😭😭 So I have to go on details.) Gemini says 'Erik' is a Northern European name, so it sounds strong and Viking-like—is that actually true?

Looking for a beta reader

Hi! I'm looking for a beta reader for my Erik/Raoul POTO fanfic.

It's a dark psychological story (think Killing Stalking-style in terms of tone, not plot). The main tags are guilt, religious imagery and symbolism, toxic relationships, slow burn, emotional whump and eventual happy ending.

(Content warning for suicide, murder, broken bones, captivity, body disposal and period-typical homophobia.)

The story follows Raoul, who has spent his entire life trying to atone for a terrible sin he committed as a child. On his way to see Christine as an adult,(he sees Christine as ticket back to his lost innocence) he meets Erik, mistakes him for the Devil, and begs him to kill him and punish him. The main focus of the story is how their relationship gradually changes over time.

My Raoul is very morally complex and heavily OOC—he's essentially an original character wearing Raoul's name. Erik starts out as a homophobic asshole, but eventually falls in love with him.

I've posted the first two chapters in ao3, but they've received around 20 hits and 0 kudos, so I'm wondering if something isn't working.

The plot is already planned out, so I'm not looking for help rewriting the story or changing the direction. I'm looking for someone who can give feedback on:

-whether the pacing within each chapter feels too slow or too rushed

-whether the English sounds natural (I'm not a native speaker)

-sentence flow

-subtle wording or phrasing.

If that sounds like something you'd enjoy, I'd really appreciate your help!( help me because I don't wanna abandon my fic🙏)

Is anyone interested in a bittersweet POTO fanfic?

I just finished a POTO fanfic, and I finally worked up the courage to share it.

It's about a young mermaid who makes a bargain with a witch, gains human legs, and eventually falls in love with Erik.

The story is based on Leroux's version of Erik (probably the only major canon divergence is that I made him younger), and it's much darker than a typical mermaid AU. It deals with themes of guilt, loneliness, devotion.

Content warnings for sexual assault (prior to meeting Erik), kidnapping, self-harm, suicide, and murder. It's definitely on the literary side and heavy angst with fluff.

I know OC-centric fics aren't everyone's thing, but I poured my heart into this one. Now that it's finally complete, I wanted to share it with people who might enjoy this sort of story.

If this sounds like your kind of fic, let me know in the comments!

Is the Leroux version of Raoul described as having blonde hair and brown eyes?

How do you translate your work from your native language to English?

I'm writing fanfic in my native language, Korean, and translating it into English using the free version of Gemini. I’m looking for a better way to do this. It’s frustrating not being able to tell if the translation is natural, and I also feel really uncomfortable with Gemini using my original writing to train its models.

Would ffn be better for long, slow-burn, literary fics than ao3?

I'm currently posting on ao3, but the fic I'm writing is a fairly slow burn, long and unfinished, with heavy themes and a gloomy, almost literary tone.

I haven't gotten any comments at all, and it's honestly making me sad. (After doing a little research, I found out that comments just aren't very common on A03. Since this is my first fanfic, I honestly had no idea.)

I put a lot of thought and effort into this story, and I really wanted to interact with readers. I don't expect a huge audience, but I do miss that feeling of talking to someone rather than just shouting into the void.

Would posting it on ffn work better for this kind of story? Has anyone had better luck there with long, slow-burn, more serious fics?

Would you read a Phantom fic about religious devotion and grief?

I've been working on a POTO OC fic and wanted to share the premise. I really poured my heart into this fic.

It's a psychological horror story about grief, obsession, and religious devotion.Erik's appearance is based on Leroux's version, while the character setting draws from both Leroux and the 2004 film.

The oc starts out loving Erik, but gradually begins viewing him as something closer to a savior than a man. It's heavy angst but don't worry, it will end with a happy ending!

Why didn't Erik try to escape the Gypsy camp?

Why did he stayed there for years? I think he was strong enough to escape. I didn't read Susan Kay's book. Can someone explain?

I wrote a fic

Hi everyone. I wrote this fanfiction because I just really wanted to see Leroux’s Erik find love and finally be happy.

It's an Erik x ofc story, but she isn't a Mary Sue. This is my very first work, so I'm a bit nervous, but I'd love it if you guys gave it a read. I poured my heart into writing this. It has a lot of angst, and both Erik and the main character go through a lot of suffering, but everyone will be happy in the end. I’m planning the final story to be around 30 chapters, and currently, 13 chapters have been updated.
