UCLA vs BU vs USC vs CMU vs Georgia Tech for MS Bioinformatics

I have done a lot of research but I would still like some opinions or things I should know or consider.

Should I prioritise these uni based on ranking?

My goal is to work in industry but I definitely don’t want a program with no depth or research like NEU. Yet I dont want to get into a “cash cow“ master’s program either.

Are Indians really not getting jobs in the US? Do I pursue my masters there?

I want to know the current job situation in the US especially for indians. I have heard and read a lot that people have to come back to india because they couldn’t find a job within 90 days of finishing their master’s.

my_qualifications - tier 1 IIT graduate from a core field with interest in pursuing higher education abroad.

I am not a phd guy and I just want to pursue a master’s in this field because I like it but I don’t see myself committing to a phd yet. I also want to earn atleast some good money after my masters because I will be spending 1-1.5 Cr and would want some return on investment for atleast 3-4 years before I come back to India. I know the current economy is bad so I dont really want to end up in a situation where I cannot find a job and have to come back to india after such a heavy debt because I dont want to waste my parents’ money.

Should I pursue master’s in the US or keep working in corporate and climb up the corporate ladder. Anyone studying abroad can reply? I am really in a dilemma

Masters or placement?

I will be graduating from a tier 1 IIT in a core field. I really like this field and would like to specialise in it but there is no point in doing masters from india if I already did my bachelor’s here. And there is no scope when it comes to my branch or even if there is then the pay scale is embarrassingly low and this is why most of the graduates opt for non core jobs which pay decent/good to iitians.

If I go for masters abroad then I will have to work there or atleast find work for 3-4 years before coming back to India because I dont see my future in the US despite it’s great education. I would never truly belong in a foreign country and certainly you can’t live forever there even if you have a job so ultimately you have to return to India at some point. The problem is that if I specialise then I would have to look for jobs in this field which I already said are paying very low. If they pay 15-20lpa even after a masters from the US then I should go for college placements which will pay the same 15-20lpa.

But the problem is that I dont really like corporate and wont enjoy working in a field I dont like. But the plus point is that I can climb up the career ladder but I still feel like without a masters at some point you will reach career stagnation. I am also worried about layoff stress since I will be working in a field I didn’t specialise in although this is the case with most iitians in the IT sector because unfortunately our jee rank decided our branch. I dont want to get into the IIM race yet or anytime soon.

I am really confused and need some advice.

My core issues are -

I don’t want to build a lonely life abroad but I still want to earn good money and live a comfortable life in India and don’t have to make a job my whole life.

Losing interest or feelings all of a sudden.

I had some serious feelings ( or so I would like to think) for this guy for over an year and we are not even friends. It was some sort of hyper fixation over a few bare minimum acts of kindness or gentleness and maybe I made them out to be way important or thoughtful than they were. Anyways so I always wanted to get rid of those feelings cause it felt very stupid and I never confessed but somehow he got the idea and I know he is interested. But I would have never confessed as I am a huge avoidant. I cant digest the idea of confessing etc and getting into a relationship cause I know I will regret it immediately and you can’t back off in a week after getting into a relationship. It’s not even about being interested in other people. It’s just that I would feel caged and stressed and so not like myself in a relationship. I consider myself the most fun in friendships and always feel like the reasons I find men attractive for are way too deep than what men find attractive in a woman. Maybe this is the reason I have never dated despite getting many chances. So anyways what I was trying to say is that this particular guy who I was so hung up on unnecessarily and then on a random day I felt I don’t like him anymore and it’s been way too long to still like him and I dont feel butterflies anymore when I think about him. This is so embarrassing to admit given I am in my early 20s and not a teenager.

I still crave a bond or relationship but I always feel like men don’t have depth or they just like the idea of women or look for a relationship to pass time. I have never felt like the guys who have claimed to have liked me, ever liked me in true essence. Mostly because I used to get approached after barely a conversation or even none. I am not saying that you can’t approach someone if you find them attractive but that shouldn’t be the only factor because it’s so superficial. So I always felt that even if I did get into a relationship with them then they would finally see how I really am and then they wouldn’t like me anymore cause they never liked me for me in the first place.

I can see so much intellectual depth when I talk to my female friends about relationships but it’s disgustingly shallow when I talk about it with my male friends. Guys seem to only care about having a pretty girlfriend. My worst fear is getting into a relationship with someone who doesn’t appreciate me or see me the way I see them. Men in movies or books seem to be so thoughtful.

Looks or personality?

I am never someone to like people solely based on looks. All the people I have ever liked was only because of how thoughtful or patient they were. I do get attracted to hot guys but when it comes to liking someone for a longer term or being genuinely flustered then it’s always due to a personality trait which so far I haven’t found in a guy who looks like my “type”.

I always end up liking men who are nowhere near my type. But I have never confessed or been in a relationship. Other than my avoidant tendencies there is another thing. I hate myself for thinking this but I feel like if I do get into a relationship with someone who is not my type then I might regret in the future or the fact that they are not my type would come up at least once in my mind after any fights and maybe I would start resenting them and myself even more for thinking that.

But I never seem to like the actual person behind the conventionally attractive guys. They are almost never able to see me truly or make me feel seen. So I can never agree to go on dates with such men.

This is kinda embarrassing to admit, given I’m in my 20s.

STUBBORN arm fat

I’m currently 51 kg at 157cm (F) and I have lost over 10-12 kgs but cannot seem to lose fat from my arms. Calorie deficit just makes my boobs even smaller rather than my arms thinner so I don’t want to go under a strict cut. Weight lifting was something I never tried so I have started doing it and it’s been some 20-25 days. My arms feel tighter definitely but not thinner. Do I need to do some OMAD diet to lose weight but even at my lowest 48 kgs my arms were the same. Another thing I observed was that I gained 1 kg since I started lifting which might indicate water retention or muscle development. The muscle is definitely there but under a layer of fat. How to lose that. I’m so frustrated.

MS Bioinformatics or MS Biostatistics

Which one should I choose if I want to land up a job after master’s. Some say bioinformatics has way more job openings than biostatistics while some say the market for bioinformatics is getting saturated and you would need a phd. I also heard you can get into other industries which require statistics if you have a biostatistics degree. I like the coursework of both although obviously statistics is heavy on maths.

Should I do masters in the US or take a corporate job?

My stats:
Tier 1 IIT biotech student

8 cgpa

Internship experience

With this I can get an on campus job of about 14-16 lpa ctc assured, if not more. But I dont want to be switching jobs every 3 years in order to get a salary hike. Honestly I find the corporate culture very unnecessarily competitive or even borderline toxic. Another thing is I dont want to be a B.Tech graduate forever. Being in India the only other option is mba and it is another rat race I dont want to get into plus I really dont find consulting, sales and stuff interesting to study it for 2 years.

Another option is going for masters in the US but given my cgpa there are only few decent unis I can get into but there is no scholarship for masters programmes in US. So there would be an expense of I think 80 lakhs to 1.2 Cr. I will be doing MS in Bioinformatics if I decide to apply. But I have recently gotten to know that this field is getting saturated and indian students are not getting jobs in the US and have to return back to india. Although I already plan to return in 5 years if I go abroad but returning jobless would be a major setback because of the hefty amount of money spent. Idk if companies in india would value a masters from US and give a job but bioinformatics jobs in india must be quite less or if they pay 14-16ctc then it's worse cause this much i would be getting anyhow if i sit in placements.

Basically my goal is to earn a comfortable 35-40 lpa without worrying about lay offs but I dont want to be working like a corporate slave all my life even in my late 30s or 40s. I want to enjoy my life. Bioinformatics is a field I could really enjoy but there are no fresher jobs in india cause this field requires a masters or phd. So the on campus placement would be in a non core field only. And being an IITian I dont want to downgrade myself and do a masters in india because there are no jobs in this area ( I dont think any IIT provides specialisation in this field).

This is getting very confusing. What should I do?

Which university to apply in for MS Bioinformatics

https://preview.redd.it/3m6gs1772g5h1.png?width=566&format=png&auto=webp&s=ca039a5cd46121515c7763fea95d01dc09fbd52a

I have shortlisted these universities. Some don't have bioinformatics but computational biology and i know both are different but looking at the course structure it seems they are used interchangeably.

My interest is in gaining academic knowledge but not for research solely. Ultimately I want to get into industry with a job and work for 3-4 years till my work visa expires and I return to my country (India). I know the visa situation is very difficult and students are having difficulties in finding jobs that sponsor their visa.
Which university among these guarantees a good chance at a job directly after masters as I do need to work for a minimum of 2-3 years. I know northeastern's program has co-op but I have read that the program is mainly like an industrial training for a job and I dont want that. I do want some academic excellence and good labs or research projects during my studies.

Now am I eligible to apply in any of these universities since these only seem good after a lot of research. I dont want to get in a university for the sake of it.

I'm a -

Tier 1 IIT B.Tech student in Biotechnology

cgpa around 8

good grades in relevant courses

1 research project under a prof( related to bioinformatics)

1 project contribution in a company's project

I was going through linkedin and yocket and I saw students from very sub par colleges like vit, jpit, mit getting into these universities but they had a 8.5 to 9.5 cg but honestly the cgpa system in these tier 3 colleges is very lenient more like a scam compared to the tough grading system in IITs.

I‘m a pre-final year biotechnology student at one of the top 6 IITs with a cgpa of around 8.

Although I can get a decent placement at this in non core fields but suddenly the thought of moving abroad for masters is coming to my mind. My cgpa is not a crazy 9+ which guarantees my acceptance to top universities in US but by the time I apply ( a few months later) I’ll be having some wet lab and dry lab projects under professors and a data science internship.

Most universities ask for gpa in US so my gpa would be around 3.1-2.

What should I do?

- Take a decent placement in a non core field and keep on switching companies until I get a big package ( honestly I dread this idea of working in a corporate in India. It seems so toxic and bland)

I dont want to do an mba but I still want a higher degree and dont want to be stuck at B.Tech forever. I also don’t want to pursue higher studies after working in corporate for 2-3 years because it’ll suck the life out of me and I would have forgotten most of my core subjects.

I want an industrial job related to my field of study but in US ( or any other country but not like overhyped like Germany and Italy).

I would like to work after my masters as I am not aiming for a phd.

Which degree has a better job market for Indians in USA.

MS in Bioengineering

MS in Bioinformatics

I dont plan to stay in USA for more than 5-6 years ( 2 years for my masters and 3-4 years for a job)

Would it still be difficult to get a job as an indian in USA given the current market situation if I do get in a university.

- Also which universities should I target ( money is not an issue but I dont want a subpar university)

I’m a pre-final year biotechnology student at one of the top 7 IITs. By the time I’ll be applying for masters which is around August - december my cgpa would be 7.9-8 which converted to gpa is around 3.1-3.2.

I can get a decent placement at this but suddenly I want to move abroad for masters but everywhere I see UCSD , USC ,UCLA gpa cut offs are too high like 3.7-3.8.

Tbh idk how easy it is to get gpa in local private colleges as they grant cgpa like nothing. The most dumbest kid you know would be having a 9+ cgpa in private colleges but it is so difficult get a good cgpa in IITs because of the grading system.

I will be having bioinformatics project when I apply and also wet lab experience and a data science internship.

I am targeting industrial jobs after masters so I want to do masters in bioinformatics.

Money is not an issue for me but I still want a decent college in US and not some subpar university.

Is there any hope for me or should I just take a placement and be done.
