Is piracy dead in 9.0?

Retuning player from pre-Diplomacy.

Piracy used to be my jam. Genuinely the mechanic that kept me going for hundreds of hours. But, now it seems dead in the space-water.

Fly-bys nerfed to bits: It was fun, but cheesy, so sure.

Boarding parties take super heavy casualties now: ok, I guess. Marines are not cheap and spending hours restocking or wasting a large ship to sit at a Vig dock and act as a marine teleporter is weak ass mechanics, but sure, piracy should have a cost... in addition to all the other costs, I guess.

More than anything else, however, I guess help buoys are gone? No matter what system I'm in, the minute I attack someone, my rep tanks -- and instantly. So, there's no "safe" system to conduct piracy in? What the hell's the point of pirate systems now?

Also, "marauder" and "raider" type fleets that seek you out to pirate you used to be fair game, no rep loss if you hunted them. But now there is? Even when they actively shoot first after trying to steal your cargo, shooting back nets a rep loss with their faction.

So, if you're not targeting pirate factions, you lose? Why? Pretending being a pirate means everyone hates you is dog water. There are tons of pirate factions in the game and they are not actively hunted into the ground by the NPC factions. But if the player does it, it's unforgivable and too easy?

Generally happy with a lot of the changes I'm seeing, but X4 was my space pirate simulator and now it feels like I either have to play factorio in space or try to fight everyone on the map.

Is there a new mechanic to counter any of this? I haven't explored the diplomacy content yet, but maybe that helps balance the insane rep loss of taking out a single large ship (-10 in some cases is just nuts).

[TOMT]Song: pop folk duet where woman ends up in ambulance

It's a super popular song from the 20teens I think. The man and woman are half singing half talking almost. The song is about the journey from them becoming friends to professing their love.

I think the woman falls off a roof or does something in a garden and has to be hauled off in an ambulance. The song ends with her giggling and saying she loves the man.

I've heard it a thousand times, but I can't for the life of me think of the name of the band or song. It's Pop-y enough that I'm sure I would hear it in a corporate whole foods grocery store or something.

Just discovered you can score fishing vessels as naval loot

I've got a couple hundred hours in War Sails and I just discovered this. Bannerlord may not be perfect, but the fact it continues to surprise me after all these years is one of the things I love about this game.

Does anyone know of any other unique boats you can only acquire through battle?

Questions about Warsails perk interactions land vs sea

The new mariner perks seem likely to only work in sea battles, but what about the old perks on the sea?

If I put a companion in charge of a boat, do their captain perks apply to all the units on that boat?

Some sea perks apply on land, specifically governor perks, do any others?

Where do my non-assigned companions go in sea battles? I see them get kills, so they are presumably on a boat, but what determines which boat they go on?

Can I put all my companions in one boat (aside from taking just one boat)?

Is there a way to assign a companion to the ballista?

For boat captains, do boatswain and shipmaster have any bearing on how they drive the boat? As in, will they be more effective when given the skirmish command if they have higher boatswain or shipmaster skill? Will they be more likely to use a ship's ram?

Any good info dumps or youtubers with hyper focused details about Warsails mechanics?

Faction not doing anything during wars?

Playing 1.4

First time as vassal for Battania, so I'm not sure if this is a Battania thing or a 1.4 thing, but it feels like a 1.4 thing.

Most of the time, I'm the only one making armies, taking land and defending. The friendly AI doesn't even add troops to their garrisons. On occasion, Caladog will make a small army and assault someone sieging one of our holdings, but his armies are so small he fails every time. In five years of vassalage and at least 10 or so wars, I've seen two other Battanian nobles create armies. They don't take anything and they rarely defend anything.

It feels like I'm all alone out here.

My last playthrough was 1.1 or 1.2. I was an Aserai vassal and they made armies like no one's business. In fact, it was a bit of the opposite, with them making so many armies that it was difficult to recruit nobles to yours without breaking up one of theirs.

Is this part of the new version or just another thing Battania struggles with?

Edit to add: Also, Battania refuses to raid enemy villages?? Every war they have zero raids, while the enemy faction has literal dozens.
