Seattle Center

I have an event at the Seattle Center in late October. I’ve stayed in a few locations in Seattle, but don’t have a favorite. Would love some recommendations that are good value. I don’t want the cheapest room, but also doesn’t need to be the Ritz. I am entertaining the idea of taking Light Rail / Monorail combo to skip the parking fun and games. (Titanium with some free nights and NUAs to spend if worth it. )

B Traven new Penguin editions - which English version?

Penguin is republishing B. Traven’s novels which seems to be a project of Timothy Heyman who married one of Traven’s stepdaughters and is managing the estate. Does anyone know which of the English versions of Treasure of the Sierra Madre or The Deathship are being published? I assume these are the “American” versions written by Traven and published by Knopf and not the UK versions which were translated from the German first editions. (I haven’t seen mention of a translator.)

Bookplate 1920s or later

This bookplate was in an older book I recently acquired. Would love to know who the artist was and the usual image searches have not been helpful.

Mailing books from Germany to USA

Does anyone have regular experience with shipping books from Germany to USA in 2026? They shouldn’t be subject to tariffs, but the bookseller I’m in discussions with refuses to ship to USA.

(My instinct is to have the books shipped somewhere else in Germany and then to USA)

B Traven

A few new acquisitions. I find B Traven quite a fascinating character. Anyone else collect him?

Any luck with Bibliopolis “wants”?

The Bibliopolis platform seems fairly ubiquitous at least for American booksellers. I have a few questions about the “leave a want” feature.

Has anyone had much luck with sellers getting back to them after finding something on their shelf or acquiring a new title? I have signed up for 25+ shops so far and only one reached out with questions seeking clarification.

I also wonder why Bibliopolis doesn’t have a feature where I as a buyer could share my wants with all 400? bookstores using the platform. If many rare booksellers have only 1/3 of their inventory online it seems like there might be some opportunity to make the market more efficient.

Discount stickers?

Would you keep or remove this sticker from a dust jacket? To me it feels like an extension of the p-rice on dust jacket and the opposite of p-rice clipping. (And adds a little irony to the story of a book, once ignored and now collected.)

(I’m also amused that I can’t spell out the word p-r-i-c-e in this sub without getting scolded by the algorithm)

Dust Jackets (Interwar Period)

It’s my understanding that dust jackets became common in the 1920s. If you are looking at titles published between 1920-40 or so, do you assume that they were sold with a jacket? Is there a year you personally use as a cutoff date? Did customs differ much between the U.S., Continental Europe, Mexico ? Do your favorite bibliographies mention if works were sold with a dust jacket?

I have some titles that I wonder if I should be waiting for a copy with a DJ or if I should purchase it without because none was ever created.

Rare Book Hub: tactical use

For collectors with smaller budgets or small time sellers who aren’t quite dealers, RBH monthly or annual membership doesn’t make sense.

Does anyone have a smart way to use RBH intermittently to save money? For example: purchasing a 10 day membership 2-3 x per year. Or have you found a way to search libraries/ institutions near you to log in for free?

Or on a similar note, what annual collection budget does it make sense to subscribe annually? $6000? $10,000?

Ken Sanders “Collecting B Traven”

Does anyone have a digital copy (PDF) of this article from 1994 in Firsts Magazine?

(I checked with Ken Sanders Rare Books and they did not have a copy.)

Education for a beginning collector

I would love your tips and advice for beginners who would like to become more knowledgeable about rare books and collecting.

It seems like a big leap between reading ABCs for Book Collecting, lurking in this sub, watching Tom Ayling videos etc and the next step of attending Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar or Rare Book School.

How do I progress from beginner to advanced beginner?

What books or periodicals do you recommend?

Great podcasts or video series worth exploring?
