Hi everyone! I don’t know if you remember me posting a while ago about rescuing a mama cat and her four kittens. ❤️

The mama is Margot, and she still doesn’t come inside the house. She has been living in my backyard, but she never leaves the yard. And she has now found herself a best friend! So I officially have two girls living in my backyard who don’t leave the property, in addition to the other eight cats I feed outside.

The four kittens are doing really well. They have all been vaccinated and they are going to be spayed/neutered this week. The two gray kittens are still looking for their forever homes, while the two black kittens already have adopters — they’re just still with me for now.

I’m also going to have Margot spayed, and she has gained a little bit of weight, which makes me really happy because she was so thin when I first rescued her. I also need to spay Madalena, her best friend. These two girls have basically claimed my backyard as their home.

I’ve made a little safe space for them in my garage, with beds at different heights and places where they can climb and feel safe. There are also several beds around the yard, toys, food and water — basically everything I can provide to make the backyard a comfortable little cat paradise for them. ❤️

My plan is eventually to bring Margot and Madalena inside, but before I can do that, I need to get both of them tested for FIV/FeLV and spayed. I already have another rescued kitten, Pitico, going through the process of being introduced to my resident cat, Mia, and I still have the four kittens here as well, so it has been a lot to manage at once.

And unfortunately, today I ran out of cat food.

This has been really difficult financially. I’ve been trying to raise funds, but I’ve also been paying for a large part of everything myself — food, veterinary care, vaccines, medications, supplies, beds, etc. I made some mistakes with my own financial planning...

You know I already feed 10 colony cats every single day. Recently, I took in a mama cat, Margot, and her four babies because I couldn’t bear to leave them outside.

The babies have already cost me around €300 in vet bills.

And now Margot is suffering.

She has badly injured her mouth, and she is already frighteningly thin. Every time she tries to eat, it hurts. She is hungry, but she can barely eat. She can only manage soft pâté, and even that is difficult for her.

She needs food just to survive and regain the weight she has lost. She needs veterinary treatment for her mouth. And the bill is already another €200+.

And once she gets through this, she still needs to be spayed and vaccinated.

I feel absolutely helpless watching her struggle to eat when all I want is to make her feel better.

I took Margot and her babies in because they needed someone.

Now I need someone to help me help them.

I care for 10 cats in my backyard, and Margot was one of them. She was a very shy, feral cat who trusted me enough to come for food. Then she brought her kittens to me.

I couldn’t leave the babies outside, so I brought them inside. They’ve since been vaccinated, and I’m doing everything I can to socialize them and give them a chance at a safe life.

But Margot struggled terribly with being brought inside.

She was frightened, stressed and completely overwhelmed. Then she injured her mouth, and seeing her suffering absolutely crushed me.

The worst part was looking at her and thinking: “Did I make her life worse?”

I brought her inside because I wanted to protect her and her babies. But she didn’t know that. She couldn’t understand that I was trying to help. She just knew that her entire world had changed and that she was scared and hurting.

I’ve taken her to the vet and spent money on her care, on top of everything I’ve already spent on the kittens. Meanwhile, I’m still feeding and caring for the other 10 cats outside.

I don’t regret helping them. But I’d be lying if I said I haven’t questioned myself.

Maybe that’s the hardest part of rescue: sometimes you do what you believe is right, and then you have to watch an animal suffer while wondering if you made the wrong decision.

I just wish I could explain to Margot that I never meant to hurt her.

I only wanted her and her babies to be safe. ❤️

I wanted to give a little update on Margot and the kittens.

The babies have now all been vaccinated, which is a huge relief. They’re doing well and continuing to get more confident with people every day. ❤️

Unfortunately, things with Margot have been much more complicated. I eventually had to separate her from the kittens because she was becoming extremely stressed inside the house. She was having episodes where she became very agitated and aggressive, trying to get out and becoming difficult to handle.

During one of these episodes, she ended up hurting herself. The most likely explanation is that she injured her mouth possibly by biting or hitting it while desperately trying to escape. Afterwards, she vomited a small amount of pinkish blood, which was obviously very frightening. She needed to be seen by the vet and treated for the injury in her mouth.

And honestly, financially this has been really difficult. I was already spending money on the kittens' vet care, vaccinations and everything they needed, and then, almost immediately afterwards, I had an unexpected veterinary expense for Margot because of the injury.

On top of that, I already feed a colony of ten cats in my backyard. I’m trying to make sure they all have food and that the ones who still need it eventually get sterilized, while also taking care of Margot and the kittens.

I’m doing everything I can to help all of them, but it has become quite a financial burden. I definitely wasn't expecting to have so many veterinary expenses come up at once, especially while also feeding ten other cats. 😭

I’m still trying to figure out the best situation for Margot because keeping her indoors was clearly causing her a lot of stress, but I also want to make sure she and the babies are safe.

For now, the babies are doing well, Margot is being monitored, and I’m taking things one day at a time. ❤️

The vet bill for the four kittens today was €305.80. I’ve attached the actual invoice so everything is completely transparent.

They have to return in about three weeks for their second vaccine dose, which will be another significant expense. I also want to have all four kittens microchipped before they are adopted.

My goal is to find them loving homes, but I want them to go to their new families with everything properly taken care of: vaccines, parasite treatment, testing, microchip and paperwork.

And there is their mom. ❤️

I’m going to take their mother to the vet as well. She needs:

Veterinary examination

FIV/FeLV testing and other necessary tests

Vaccination

Spaying

Microchip and registration

I’m estimating around €300–€500 for the mother, depending on the tests she needs and the final cost of the surgery.

For the kittens, I’m also expecting approximately €120 for four microchips, plus around €128 for their next round of vaccines, based on the prices already charged by the clinic today.

So altogether, I’m expecting the veterinary costs for all four kittens + their mother to be around €850–€1,050.

Eu alimento uma pequena colónia de gatos que vive aqui na zona da minha casa e da casa da minha vizinha. Há algum tempo comecei a alimentar uma das gatinhas e, recentemente, ela apareceu com os quatro bebés.

Tentei contactar várias associações, a Câmara Municipal de Beja e outras entidades para tentar encontrar uma solução para os bebés, mas infelizmente ninguém tinha possibilidade de os acolher.

Entretanto, vi dois cães a aproximarem-se dos gatinhos e a mãe a tentar defendê-los. Fiquei com medo de que alguma coisa acontecesse, então decidi recolher os quatro bebés e colocá-los em segurança dentro de casa.

For those who may not know Frederico’s story, he was found in a very fragile condition. He was extremely thin, weak and seriously unwell. He was taken to the veterinarian, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia and needed treatment and medication to recover.

Frederico spent some time receiving veterinary care and, after completing his treatment, he was finally able to come home. He is now recovering safely inside the house, where I can keep a close eye on him, make sure he takes all his medication, eats properly and gets plenty of rest.

Thankfully, he is doing so much better now. 🥹🤎

He is gaining weight, looking healthier and slowly getting stronger every day. Seeing him improve after everything he went through has been incredibly emotional.

But we still have his veterinary bill to finish paying.
