I thrifted this old cotton sheet (it’s amazing how thick and high quality it feels compared to modern sheets) for a couple bucks last year and buried it in my stash for the right moment. Fast forward to this summer when I booked a Disneyland trip for me and my (adultish) children, I knew it was time to make something ridiculous.
I looked at a bunch of bedsheet dress tutorials and drew inspiration from Selkie style puff dresses.
The pattern was self-drafted. I cut out 3 bodice pieces, stitched them together with the ties in back. I left a lot of slack so that I could pin it down the princess seams to fit my shape better. Then I sewed along the line I pinned and trimmed the excess once I was satisfied. I made a piece of bias tape and attached it to the bottom of the bodice.
The sleeves are giant rectangles with channels for elastic on the top and bottom.
The skirt started out as a literal separate skirt. Just a big rectangle with elastic sewn to the top. I thought about keeping it two pieces but decided that I definitely want a dress so I carefully pinned the bodice to the top of the skirt in a way that looked good while I was wearing the pieces, then sewed them together. Oh, I also removed the elastic from the part of the skirt that meets the middle of the bodice so it lays flat there. I’m not sure if that was the right decision or not but I think it looks okay. I’ll probably leave it next time. I had to redo the stitching a few times because it ended up looking wonky/crooked. It still kind of is.
I ended up hand stitching the outer few inches of bodice to the skirt because there was too much fabric for my sewing machine.
Then I just cut a bunch of strips, gathered them, then stitched them on for the bottom ruffle.
Or, talk me into the alternative.
Our kitchen currently has an ill-fitting range so food bits fall between the range and the counter. Because of this, he would like to go the drop in cook top route. Our kitchen is small so the only spot to place an oven would be directly below the cooktop... like a range. This really limits our appliance options and as DIYers, adds a lot of unnecessary complication and time to an already intimidatingly large remodel project.
Any advice or experience in this area?
