Aspects of high level tournament play that I had not considered until watching some 2021 & 2022 GSL matches

After watching several 2021 and 2022 GSL matches, I noticed that several players had ice packs/cold packs in there hands between matches. This would be in reaction to pain/swelling/discomfort and/or to prevent pain/swelling/discomfort. High AMP sustained over long gaming/practice sessions and over periods of time can lead to RSIs. A little googling reveals that some high level players have suffered with swelling, CTS, pain, and in at least 1 case surgery was needed to repair the damage sustained.

In addition to pain/swelling/discomfort, players could suffer from fatigue in their hands/wrists/forearms/shoulders. Anyone who has engaged in calisthenics (ex: doing push-ups) has experience the point at which they've reached their limit and must stop and rest, even if only for a few minutes. It is quite possible that players in the various tournaments have run into that sort of wall mid-game. Instead of pausing or stopping the game, players might slow down their AMP which could cost them the match, or resign the match. There are several instances across many matches where a player seems to be in a disadvantageous but survivable position, and resigns the match.

Knowing the taxing nature of competitive RTS play at high levels, it would have been wise for Blizzard to design the game to be a bit less micro intensive. Instead of going for a less micro intensive design, Blizzard devs and management, designed the game around and promoted Archon mode for SC-2. IMO, this was intended to increase sales of the game so that players engage in Archon Mode competitions.

Share your favorite Replays/VODs/Youtubes of herO and other high level Protoss players

I've made criticisms of herO's gameplay and decision making that can be IMO questionable despite him being quite skilled. Since folks have showered praise upon herO, please share links to some replays, VODs, and Youtubes of herO and other high level Protoss players. If you can add a quick one-liner with your submission that includes:

  1. which SC-2 game era (WoL, HotS, LotV)
  2. why it is one of your favorite matches

If one doesn't know the game era, then leave it out. Item #2 is more important to include with your link so, that we all can know what to look for.

Please forgive me I confused herO ( https://liquipedia.net/starcraft2/HerO_(Kim_Joon_Ho) ) with HerO ( https://liquipedia.net/starcraft2/HerO ). I thought that the it was just Song Hyeon-deok, based on the name, instead of 2 different Korean players. Lastly, if anyone links to games with Song Hyeon-deok, please indicate that it is Song Hyeon-deok instead of Kim Joon-ho.

Finally Her0 did something I consider to be big brain

I just started watching this video cast by Winter ==> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6zHayGg7Zg

At time point 3:50, Her0 sends shades to toward Clem's main base. At the last second he splits the shades and sends 1 shade to stand right in the middle of a cluster of Terran troops. The 1 shade in the middle of the troops completes the transfer, which causes the siege tank to blow up the shade, the Marines, and the low HP Cyclone. A few seconds later Her0 throws shades at Clem's main and this time they get in and start attack the SCVs. This short exchange caused Clem to completely wall off his natural with Supply Depots. Causing Terrans to kill their own troops by siege tank fire isn't new. Its the manner of the harass that lead up to the point of killing the cluster of units that caused Clem to react with a complete wall off. This is manipulating one's opponent. Her0 got a few toes into the Sun Tzu territory. I still think his Protoss drunken boxing technique needs more work.

Looking for guides/YT Videos for migrating from Virtualbox on Linux to QEMU-KVM

I have some Virtualbox VMs (guest OSes). I want to migrate to QEMU-KVM on Linux. I'm looking for guides/YT videos for:

  • migrating my existing *.vdi based VMs to QEMU-KVM
  • virt-manager
  • distro specific info (ex: setting up on EndeavourOS or raw Arch, OpenSUSE, Fedora, Debian Testing, Void-Linux, Linux Mint, etc)... Arch has a massive list of qemu packages
  • how to setup and optimize new VMs
  • how to do stuff via the command line and through virt-manager
  • do's and don'ts, and general advice/guidance

I'm on Linux Mint right now, but I will be installing on other distros (testing/experimentation).

Thanks.

Moving from ext4 to Btrfs, how to calc. Btrfs partition sizes?

Hello everyone,

I'm considering a move from Linux Mint to another distro and will be moving several of my partitions from ext4 to Btrfs. I'm currently on Linux Mint and I'm using ext4 with Timeshift in rsync mode to do snapshots of my root filesystem. To get an understanding of the cumulative size/load of the files that have changed and/or deleted , I ran "sudo rsync -anH --stats --delete" against the last 2 weekly snapshots and I got the following:

> Number of files: 1,029,373 (reg: 717,289, dir: 78,492, link: 233,590, special: 2) > Number of created files: 6,566 (reg: 6,538, dir: 26, link: 2) > Number of deleted files: 6,704 (reg: 6,676, dir: 26, link: 2) > Number of regular files transferred: 6,717 > Total file size: 20,767,701,488 bytes > Total transferred file size: 1,108,555,278 bytes > Literal data: 0 bytes > Matched data: 0 bytes > File list size: 9,567,203 > File list generation time: 0.001 seconds > File list transfer time: 0.000 seconds > Total bytes sent: 34,268,345 > Total bytes received: 1,145,881 >
> sent 34,268,345 bytes received 1,145,881 bytes 3,372,783.43 bytes/sec > total size is 20,767,701,488 speedup is 586.42 (DRY RUN)

I believe the cumulative size of the files that changed and/or deleted is in this value in "Total transferred file size: 1,108,555,278 bytes". Is this correct?

I'm thinking for the root filesystem, I only need to keep the last 5 weekly snapshots, and the last 10 on-demand snapshots. Would this make sense or should I change those values? I have not been making snapshots of my home folder so I have no idea of the size in changes there, especially with the hidden dot folders.

Please help me understand this

Game #1. I'm at the 9:50 time point. It looks like Hero isn't even trying to win. Its like he is goofing around chasing after lings 1 at a time, and doing some B.S. harass that does nothing. His worker count and supply count isn't building quickly. To me its like he is playing to loose the game by goofing around.

I get applying some pressure but the stalker juggling for near zero benefit, while not really developing his bases, army, upgrades? The only buildings he's destroy were 2 creep tumors I think so far. Meanwhile the zerg army is growing and growing. Please help me understand this.

How? Outlook PST to B-Bird on Linux with maildir, 3x Pop accts, profile outside of user home folder

Hello everyone. I'm looking for guidance on finishing off my migration from Win-10, MS Office Outlook to Linux with BetterBird. In Win-10/MS Outlook, what I have is:

  • 3x POP Accounts (separate outlook profiles)
  • A PST file for each POP Account
  • A separate PST file with just my Outlook Contacts
  • All of my POP Accounts use/share the contacts from my Outlook Contacts PST file
  • All sticky notes have already been exported to text files (about 35 of them no need to import them into Betterbird)
  • No calendar or tasks data
  • 3x additional PST files with messages from old accounts (reference materials only)

The 3 Pop accounts are:

  • ISP-Main (mail for my ISP acct must be maintained)
  • Main-Biz (no jokes or memes)
  • Job-Hunter (for job hunting)
  • ISP-Main has about 100 messages in the inbox, 20 in the sent items
  • Job-Hunter has about 400 messages in the inbox, 175 in the sent items
  • Main-Biz has about 3,000 messages in the inbox, 300 in the sent items
  • Main-Biz has 4 sub-folders under the Inbox, and each folder has 100-200 messages
  • I have about 150 contacts
  • Nothing in drafts in any of the 3 email accounts

What I want to do in BetterBird on Linux is:

  • Install Betterbird on EndeavourOS (Arch Linux derivative distro).
  • Setup 4x POP Accounts with separate mail boxes (I keep mail from each account separate so I don't need any sort of unified inbox/inbox view).
  • 3 of the POP accounts match the above email accounts.
  • The 4th POP account will be a dummy account.
  • The messages in the 3x additional reference material PSTs will migrate to sub-folders within the dummy account.
  • The dummy account won't send/receive mail.
  • Store everything under a folder of my choice outside of my Linux user home folder.
  • Convert each email PST to maildir format.
  • Use maildir format and folder structures for each POP account within Betterbird, which I believe stores email messages in separate *.eml files.
  • Replicate the 4 sub-folders within Main-Biz.
  • Convert the contacts in my Outlook Contacts PST to vcard.
  • Use and share my vcard contacts between the POP accounts.
  • Any new contacts are stored as vcards with the other vcards to maintain a single contacts storage that is used/shared between my email accounts
  • Complete separation between POP accounts (separate profiles with separate email signatures would be best)
  • Be able to roll the top-level of my email and all sub-folders into a tar ball and then compress it (backup).
  • Be able to restore the folder structure from a compressed tar ball.
  • Be able to migrate to a new PC, install Betterbird, restore the compressed tar ball outside my user home folder, point Betterbird to the restored folder, continue without any data/email loss.
  • Be able to switch Linux distros (ex: from EndeavourOS to Fedora or Linux Mint), install better bird, restore the compressed tar ball outside my user home folder, point Betterbird to the restored folder and continue.
  • Lose no data, emails, or attachments of course.

Folder structure outside of my Linux user home folder:

  • main top-level folder path = /mnt/james-data/email/
  • sub-folders for each POP account under the top-level folder path
  • ISP-Main folder path = /mnt/james-data/email/isp-main/
  • Main-Biz folder path = /mnt/james-data/email/main-biz
  • Job-Hunter folder path = /mnt/james-data/email/job-hunter/
  • Ref-Only folder path = /mnt/james-data/email/ref-only/

I believe readpst can take my PST files and convert the email messages to mbox format. I think mb2md can convert my mbox files to maildir. I may have to convert each Inbox and sub-folder, within the MS Outlook PST files, to mbox, one at a time.

  1. Can Betterbird share a single storage of vcard contacts between multiple POP accounts?
  2. Will Betterbird be able to handle the amount of email and contact data I have without slow and bogged down?
  3. What if I had double or triple the amount of email and contact data, would that be a problem for Betterbird performance wise?
  4. Are there problems/bugs/issues with running Betterbird within KDE/Wayland?
  5. Are there problems/bugs/issues with running Betterbird within X11/Cinnamon desktop?
  6. Can I have email message displayed as a list in a folder within Betterbird, but without a reading pane, which requires a double-click to open the message to read it?
  7. Does Betterbird have any anti-malware features like blocking malicious scripts embedded HTML formatted messages?
  8. Does Betterbird have SPAM and SCAM detection/filtering?
  9. Does Betterbird have features/setting to protect against malware attachments?
  10. What is the upper limit on attachment size when sending a message with an attachment?
  11. Does Betterbird suffer any performance loss when downloading large amounts of email from POP accounts (ex: downloading 800+ messages over a fast 500mbps downlink... all ethernet and fiber optics)?
  12. Does Betterbird employ any forms of telemetry (opt-in, opt-out, etc)? I prefer to be telemetry free.

Thanks in advance.

Questions about TheCoreLite Hotkey setup

I downloaded TheCoreLite v2.3.9 from GitHub. It was last updated for the v5.0.14 PTR patch, back in Oct 26, 2024. I game on Linux with a G.Skill KM780MX keyboard ( https://www.gskill.com/product/155/156/1541645396/KM780-RGB-Cherry-MX-Brown-EOL ). The switch at the back of the keyboard is set to "G" to enable n-key rollover. However, from what I'm able to determine it is not compatible with rapid fire setups. If I hold 2 keys at the same time it just repeats the last key (it does the same thing in Windows 10). I use the right-handed mouse setup, in TheCoreLite, with my left hand on the left side of the keyboard.

My questions are:

  1. Is there a way to get around the limitation of my keyboard?
  2. The warp-in key is bound the period which is on the right side of the keyboard. Was this set in error? Is there a better key bind that I should use?
  3. The move command (not attack-move) for all units is set to "H". Was this key bind set to discourage using the move command? I would prefer not to reach beyond the "G" on my keyboard.
  4. The set rally point command for all races is set to the letter O, is there a better key bind to use, instead of reaching across the keyboard?
  5. For the Zerg Hatchery, Lair, and Hive, the set worker rally command is set to 9, would the number 4 be a better key bind to prevent reaching across the keyboard?

I'm considering setting the gather command for workers to number 4 and the set rally point command to Y. The letter Y is currently bound to the gather command for all workers. I know that I'm free to pick whatever I want, but I'm sure others have come up with workarounds and solutions to the questions I'm asking so there isn't much point in re-inventing the wheel.

My List Of Questions For How I Evaluate Linux Distros

I've composed a list of questions that help frame the way in which I approach evaluating distros. I'm sharing this with the community because we have the freedom to experiment with and explore the wonderful artwork that is Linux distributions. My list of questions can be used to:

  • collect a wealth of info. in the process of determining if a distro. is a good fit for a user's tastes and needs
  • gather info. for the sake of learning about Linux and increasing one's awareness
  • get one's inquisitive juices flowing

The answers to my questions, along with actual time spent using/interacting with distros, will assist in the evolution of one's preferences. To go beyond individual enlightenment, the questions and answers should be shared with the community in conversations, hence the purpose of the r/DistroHopping subreddit.

The intended audience is everyone but specifically:

  • newbies trying to find the "best" or "right" distro for themselves and their situation (this goes beyond the find one and done crowd)
  • intermediate level users
  • those who recently switched and have caught the distro hop itch
  • the distro hoppers who constantly distro hop looking a distro that is just right (like Goldie Locks)

My bias: I tend to compare, in my mind, almost every distro. against:

  • Linux Mint Cinnamon and XFCE editions
  • Pop_OS
  • Manjaro
  • EndeavourOS
  • raw Arch Linux
  • the Arch Wiki
  • the Calamares GUI installer

Linux Veterans: If you think I've missed/omitted something important please let me know.

Overzealous Reductionists: Please stop. I'm fully aware of the distro. chooser site. I'm going well beyond the distro. chooser.

The tl;dr crowd: There is no tl;dr.

Newbie users (mostly coming from Windows) who are in a rush to get to a working graphical desktop and move on with life: You have an opportunity to slow down, read, think, and contemplate before you leap. You are no longer in the World of Micro$loth Windows, where your options are limited and dictated to you. Here in the Linux community you have lots of options and choices. **If you are just looking for a quick distro. recommendation:

  • please create a new topic
  • place your request there
  • the community will drop recommendations in the comments of your new thread**

Before you go off to make your new topic, Linux is a journey not a destination. Welcome.

  42. What is the latest versions of KDE, Gnome, XFCE, Cinnamon, MATE desktops in the repos.?
  43. Does the distro support my hardware, especially older hardware, older GPUs (ex: GTX 10 series and older), Macs, and bleeding edge hardware that recently hit the market.
  44. What do I like about this distro and what do I dislike?
  45. Is this distro. worth using a daily driver for me?
  46. Is there a part or feature of a distro that I would like to replicate or see replicated in another distro. (ex: fonts used in the distro, wiki/documentation structure, a guide, kernel management handling)?
  47. If evaluating a derivative distro, then how does the base distro. influence the derivative (the base distro. should to be evaluated)?
  48. What is the distro used for (Server, Workstation, Desktop, Handheld)?

The Recent Arch AUR Attack Is An Opportunity

With the recent attack on Arch Linux's AUR (Arch's community contributed package repository) and several other recent CVEs affecting Linux, it has without a doubt, spooked many community members and raised eyebrows. Arch will be fine because this isn't the first time someone or some group has messed with the AUR. However, this is an opportunity. It is an opportunity to put fresh eyes on the many distros that are available, especially the lesser used and lesser known distros. The site ( https://distrowatch.com/ ) provides a list distros based on page hit rankings, which is a good place to start and get a sense of what is available.

If this AUR attack has given you even the tiniest bit of alarm/concern, don't run. Pick a distro. you haven't used before or haven't touched in a long time. Load the distro into a VM or backup your data and install it directly to drive(s), and explore. I created a post with a list of questions that I use to guide how I evaluate distros ( https://www.reddit.com/r/DistroHopping/comments/1ub5cxt/my_list_of_questions_for_how_i_evaluate_linux/ ). Use the questions, explore a distro, take some notes, report back to the community. Compare it to the distro you are already using. I did this exercise when I purchased my Asus TUF Gaming A16 laptop. Several other community members who recently purchased the same unit at the time, joined in and contributed their knowledge and experience in a thread I started ( https://www.reddit.com/r/AMDLaptops/comments/159mj6i/anyone_have_experience_with_asus_tuf_gaming_a16/ ). If you start with a VM and the distro. looks pretty good, then you might want to install it on your drive(s) (aka the bare metal). For me, I'm going to take Solus ( https://getsol.us/ ) and Void Linux ( https://voidlinux.org/ ) for a ride in VMs and then maybe on my Asus TUF A16. Both are independent distros. meaning they don't use another distro as a base.

This AUR attack feels like it was to scare folks away from the Arch distro family

Update:

Thanks everyone. It seems my instincts were off. Its great that the community is kind enough to allow folks bounce ideas off of community.

=====

It feels like it was done to intentionally to scare folks into distro. hopping away from the Arch distro family. Its like setting off a fire cracker in the middle of a herd of wild buffalo, which is going to cause the herd to stamped away from the noise source. If folks leave Arch, the most logical bleeding edge distro targets are: 1-Fedora, 2-OpenSUSE, and Ubuntu maybe a distant 3rd. Are my instincts in the right place?

This guide was written with the Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition in mind, but works for the XFCE and MATE editions. This guide was written with the Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition in mind, but works for the XFCE and MATE editions. It should also work with the LMDE edition but I have not installed and test that edition. The content of this guide is a revision of the steps I use to get Mint ready for gaming as described in the following comment ==> https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/1hr4kw9/comment/m4vo355/

It is not necessary to consult my comment linked above. My comment is included for the purpose of completeness. The content of this guide was written by me without the use of any AI chatbots. The target audience is anyone who wants to get Mint ready for gaming quickly, but the guide is written to be readily accessible to newbie Linux users/gamers. The guide may seem long, but it is a series of very short steps. Running through the entirety of the steps can be done in minutes.

Installing Mint, initial updates, and snapshots

  • install the Mint Cinnamon distro with the correct ISO ==> https://www.linuxmint.com/download.php
  • reboot, login, and connect Mint to your router via Ethernet and 2G/5G WiFi
  • setup Timeshift and do the 1st TS backup (this takes 30-60 seconds)
  • go to "Update Manager" and click "Install Updates" to run the 1st Mint update
  • reboot after the updates complete

Installing the latest kernel and changing Power Mode

  • go to the "System Settings" app > "Power Management" and set the "Power Mode" to "Performance"
  • go to "Update Manager" > "View" menu > "Linux Kernels"
  • install the latest kernel and reboot using the new kernel

Installing Nvidia drivers (AMD GPU users can skip this section)

  • in the Mint menu, go to the "System Settings" app > Driver Manager > select the recommended driver > click "Apply Changes"
  • once the driver installation completes click "Restart"

Installing WINE

  • go to https://www.winehq.org/
  • click "Download", scroll down a bit and click "Ubuntu"
  • there are a few lines to copy/paste and run in the terminal... these are SAFE because they are coming directly from the WINE project as the source
  • when adding the WineHQ repository, ONLY copy, paste, and run the commands for Ubuntu v24.04... Mint v22.3 is based on Ubuntu v24.04 (Noble)
  • I'm going with the "stable branch" branch so, I ONLY copy, paste, and run the command for the "stable branch"

Installing Lutris

  • go to https://lutris.net/
  • click "Download"
  • scroll down a bit to the Ubuntu section and click the Github link for Mint/Ubuntu ==> https://github.com/lutris/lutris/releases
  • download the latest *.deb file (v0.5.22 at the time of writing this guide) from Github to the "Downloads" folder in the user home directory
  • open a terminal in the "Downloads" folder
  • run "sudo dpkg -i <package_name.deb>", obviously replacing "<package_name.deb>" with the name of the downloaded *.deb file
  • close Lutris (DO NOT INSTALL GAMES YET)

Installing Steam

  • go to "Software Manager" (GUI app store) in the Mint menu
  • install the i386 Steam package
  • after the install completes, close the "Software Manager", and launch Steam from the Mint menu
  • log into Steam
  • close Steam (DO NOT INSTALL GAMES YET)

Installing ProtonUp-Qt and GE-Proton components

  • make sure your internet connection is up
  • in the Mint menu, go to "Software Manager"
  • once it loads, search for "ProtonUp" (without quotes)
  • select "ProtonUp-Qt" > click "Install"
  • once the install completes, close "Software Manager"
  • go to Mint menu > "Games" > select "ProtonUp-Qt"
  • in the drop-down list right under "Install for:", make sure Steam is selected
  • click "Add version"
  • under "Compatibility tool:" make sure "GE-Proton" is selected
  • under "Version" select the latest GE-Proton package (GE-Proton10-34 is the latest at this moment), click "Install"
  • follow the above steps to install the GE-Proton package that is the version prior to the latest
  • with the 2 GE-Proton packages installed, close the "Install Compatibility Tool" dialog box
  • click the drop-down right under "Install for:", select Lutris
  • click "Add version"
  • follow the steps above to install the latest GE-Proton package and the version prior to the latest
  • with the 2 GE-Proton packages installed, close the "Install Compatibility Tool" dialog box
  • close ProtonUp-Qt

Documenting your installation

  • open a terminal
  • run "inxi -Fz > Mint_vA.B.C_inxi_report_after_full_setup_on_yyyy-mm-dd.txt"
  • open Timeshift and run the 2nd TS backup

(vA.B.C = the mint version) (yyyy-mm-dd = year-month-day)

I suggest a clean reboot and then install your games. With Steam you can have all games run via Proton or selectively use proton for some games. To use the GE-Proton versions installed you will have to select one in the Steam settings, or by specifying a GE-Proton version in a game's properties. The same needs to be done in Lutris settings.

Congrats the core setup is complete.
