[LF[][Daggerheart][Paid][20$/session][Every Other Thurs 6:30pm PST][ROLL20][1/56 players] Recruiting for a new Daggerheart mini-campaign for new players!

Hello! This is a Learn to Play Daggerheart - the new Fantasy RolePlaying system from Darrington Press - adventure. Everyone is welcome and will learn together the system, as we uncover clues to determine what monster is attacking the village of Santavio!

We will have a free session Zero where I will teach the rules and talk a bit about the characters, and get to play a small piece of the adventure!

I will be ordering (and paying) personalized character tokens for the players of the campaign! This way, you can have a digital memory of the character you will be playing!

We will be using the Daggerheart Core Rules as well as the Hope and Fear optional rules.

A little background of the campaign:

Andaluria is a land of sweeping vineyards where beauty and dread intertwine. By day, the streets and valleys are alive with festivals, music, and the scent of wine—but when the sun sets, monsters come out to feast. For generations, the old superstitions and folk rites kept the beasts at bay, but of late the nights have grown unnaturally long, and the citizens of Andaluria live in fear of increasingly terrifying monsters.

In a Dark Heart of Andaluria campaign, you’ll play monster hunters who must investigate horrific crimes, navigate political strife, and slay supernatural creatures to protect the people from eternal darkness.

Join us to see who will survive the Dark Lands of Andaluria!!

About Me

I am an experience bilingual GM (se habla español!) with experience running long term ttrpg campaigns. This is my fourth Daggerheart mini-campaign, so I am very familiar with the system.

I also run games at conventions, in English and Spanish. I have run D&D and Daggerheart games at Wondercon, Comic-Con and Gencon for several years.

My games usually get full and I like to complete the campaigns that I start. I have more than three years in Startplaying and have run games for more than 100 players online. Players that join sessions through Startplaying are usually more committed, and rarely do sessions get cancelled.

I also have a great and friendly Discord community, where we play Wordle, Trivia, QOTD, try out several TTRPG systems and run free one-shots from time to time

Separating the party - one part gets into combat the other doesn’t

I may be in the situation where I am going to have the party split up with some PC’s entering into combat and others do not.

How would you handle this situation in daggerheart? In dnd i would just ask everyone to roll initiative and will go from that order. How would you do it here?

Thanks

Our final session of Chapter one of our Five Banners Burning mini-campaign!

Hello!

Here is the YouTube video of the final session of Chapter One of our Five Banners Burning mini-campaign!

This session ended in a combat where every PC had a different objective — and for a moment, it seems that it will was going to turn into a PVP encounter. But by the end, the party realized some of them needed to give something up, and they chose to join forces instead. There was a blaze-of-glory moment, and a Player Character from Polaris made the ultimate sacrifice.

One of the most interesting parts of this session was watching the party negotiate their own conflicting goals in real time, and choosing to compromise rather than tear each other apart.

SESSION PREP NOTES

When prepping for this session, I worked out three possible endings for the campaign:

Ending One — The Marriage Goes On
Once the combat in the cabin ends, Clover is returned to the political conspiracies. Cerulean is quietly devastated. Clover goes with the party without a fight — hurt, tired, resigned.

The alliance between Polaris and Jasthaen holds. Jasthaen sends labor to Polaris. Whether Clover's fears were right — that this means enslavement for the people of Jasthaen — is a question that will only answer itself slowly, over years. The party may or may not be around to witness it.

Adamant Towers will eventually learn that her child tried to run. What she does with that knowledge is worthy of its own mini-campaign.

Ending Two — Clover Disappears
After the battle, the party lets Clover go. The resistance takes them east, away from Lightning Valley.

The Armada-aligned players have to decide how much of what happened they report back home. The world gets less stable — Krosten may get her war, and Hilltop may claim the fertile land they've had their eye on (the reason they came to Polaris in the first place). But somewhere out there, Clover is healing, with no political value left, just starting to figure out what it means to be a person.

Before the party leaves Lightning Valley, Cerulean asks one question: "Are they alright?"

What the party tells him is their call.

Ending Three — The Split
The most dramatic option. The combat turns into full PVP — Armada players against everyone else. Whoever's left standing has to live with the consequences: prosecution by every nation, a reputation as murderers across the continent. The party gets to make their choice, but the cost is steep. Clover's fate plays out the same as in Ending One or Two.

Ending Four — Anything Else
As always, my players are excellent at just messing up whatever I plan, so there's always the possibility of a fourth option: the ending I didn't see coming. Working through the first three gave me the prep I needed to improvise if that's what happened.

What do you think actually went down? Check out the session to find out! (Spoiler, it is on 02:00:44 Fate of Clover - Oziver)

Quick note before we go to other updates - we are looking for one player to join this campaign in Startplaying- we are just starting Chapter Two so this is a great moment to join! Send me a message or put a comment in the post if interested.

You can also see the whole post of this session, art and other things in my Patreon.

Thanks! Hope this is helpful for anyone that wants to run a Five Banners Burning campaign!

Apostasy - Umbra Lessons

Hello!

I posted this a while back with my previous Reddit username, but here it is again! I ran an Age of Umbra Mini-campaign that ran for 10 sessions, and here are some of the things that I learned while running that campaign frame! Hope you enjoy the reading!

NOTE: Reddit did not allow me to post pictures or screenshots! If you want to read the post with the pictures and screenshots, please see the Patreon original post.

After ending our Age of Umbra mini-campaign I’ve been reflecting on what a nice surprise it has been to tell a story within this campaign frame.

For those who haven’t run it or heard about it before, here’s a bit of lore about the setting, along with some thoughts on what made it such a remarkable experience to run.

The Lore

The gods have left the world.

When they departed, they ruptured the cycle of life itself. Now, living beings are forever trapped in the world after death, transforming into hideous creatures that wander endlessly. The land is now filled with bizarre and dangerous horrors born from this broken cycle.

But not everything is lost. There are still the Enduring—those who continue to live and resist the darkness. Using the magical power of the Sacred Pyres scattered across the world, they build fragile communities and attempt to reclaim the world from the shadows of Umbra.

Setting and Mood

The first thing that came to my mind when reading this campaign frame was Elden Ring.

The Sacred Pyres and the dark tone of the world reminded me a lot of the Lands Between and the Sites of Grace. It feels like an Elden Ring world where you are not the only Tarnished wandering through the world —there are other Enduring trying to survive alongside you.

Another key element for this campaign is darkness.

In Daggerheart, there is no darkvision, which makes darkness more dangerous—and more interesting. It was honestly great and funny to watch the party struggle to navigate dark battlemaps. Monsters dragging characters into the unknown hits very differently when the players physically cannot see where their token has been pulled.

This feeling really shines when using a digital tabletop platform like Roll20.

And to strengthen the mood even further, tense and creepy music is the cherry on top. I created a dedicated playlist in the Monument Studios Fantasy+ app just for this campaign. (See screenshots on Patreon original post to know which tracks I used from the Monument Studios app!)

Deadly Encounters

Because of the adversaries found in the Age of Umbra Adversaries Supplement, and the fact that some of them score critical hits on a 19, many encounters in this setting can be deadly—especially for a level 1 party.

Because of this, some of the most memorable encounters weren’t necessarily about defeating the enemy. Instead, they were about surviving, resisting, or finding alternative ways to end the confrontation.

The PCs often felt overwhelmed during these encounters—but that’s why their victories felt more rewarding.

Hope

In such a dark setting, it’s important for GMs to remember to include moments of light.

Small things can make a big difference: a strange but funny NPC, a quiet moment of rest near a Sacred Pyre, the beauty of the stars shining in the night sky.

I’ll admit this is something I didn’t do as often as I should have. But when those moments appeared, I could see the relief at the table. The players enjoyed those brief sparks of joy, knowing that once they left the safety of the Sacred Pyre, the world would once again become dangerous and unforgiving.

A word of caution

During Session Zero, I made sure to warn the players about how deadly this campaign frame could be. I encouraged everyone to have a backup character ready.

This warning ended up shaping the way the party approached the game. They became cautious, strategic, and very thoughtful about their decisions—which actually enhanced the survival-horror tone of the campaign.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Age of Umbra was an extraordinary surprise. It created tension, memorable moments, and a truly unique atmosphere at the table.

Below you can see some magnificent art from Peach (who played Sylvera in our campaign).

You can also check out the episodes of this mini-campaign on YouTube, or listen to the podcast version here on Patreon (link below) where I include GM commentary and tips on how to run the campaign.

TIPS FOR GM'S THAT WANT TO RUN AGE OF UMBRA

If you’re considering running Age of Umbra, here are a few things I learned while running this mini-campaign that may help you and your players get the most out of the setting.

Lean into the darkness.
Make Sacred Pyres feel safe.
Not every encounter should be a fight to the death.
Use strange, unhinged and memorable NPCs.
Give players moments of hope.

Running Age of Umbra is a balancing act between despair and resilience, and when that balance is right, the story stays in your players mind!

Lessons learned while running Five Banners Burning

The previous post got taken down, so I am submitting it again!

Hello!

For some time, I have been running a Five Banners Burnings campaign, and we just finished Chapter One of the campaign.

As you may know, this campaign frame is highly political and involves several nations with their own objectives, all fighting for control of the continent, but not necessarily with combat, instead, they are using politics, arranged marriages, backstabbing, trade agreements to try to establish dominance in the region . Each Player Character chooses which of the five nations to belong to, and the campaign really excels when all players belong to different nations with conflicting priorities.

So what have I learned so far? How is running a highly political campaign different from your regular heroic high-fantasy setting?

CONFLICTING PRIORITIES

This campaign works very well when the PCs have different and conflicting priorities. In the campaign I am running, a marriage is set to create an alliance between two nations — but the groom went missing, so the party went to find him. The catch is that the marriage would mean the people of one nation being sent into an arrangement where they will obtain a lot of forbidden knowledge in marriage, but might be mistreated, while granting another nation prosperity, territory, and power and to make things more complicated, another nation was going to get a stable workforce to work on their cities if the marriage went through. Some PCs wanted the marriage to happen. Others did not.

When the groom was finally found, the party had to make a decision — and for a few moments it turned into a PVP-style encounter. It was heroic, tense, and unlike anything I had run before.

This is what I think this campaign frame is designed to achieve. When preparing a session, make sure that once the final objective is met, the party have goal conflicting enough that someone is going to have to give in.

STRESS AND SOCIAL INTERACTIONS

This type of campaign has very little combat. So what is at stake if there is no risk of losing HP? This is where the Daggerheart Stress mechanic plays a key role. Political campaigns are full of social complications — deceiving people, convincing them, lying — still plenty of opportunities to roll the duality dice, still plenty of tense moments. But how do you make those moments feel like they have real stakes? Lean into the rule that a roll with Fear means the players gain Stress. This is probably the campaign where my characters have accumulated the most Stress, and where it has most meaningfully affected what they can do at the table.

THINK ABOUT THE BIG PICTURE

I initially planned this campaign the way I plan any other — a general outline, with the overall arc filling in as sessions progress. But I quickly realized that approach would make this feel like any other high-fantasy setting, where good and evil are more clearly defined and the party is working toward the same objectives.

For a campaign like this one, the events that happened before the campaign started — the objectives of each nation, the history, the overall arc — carry much greater weight. They need to be detailed enough to serve as a guide on how each NPC will react to the characters. NPC’s will not always be telling the truth and this will not necessarily be evident as a lot of them are politicians trained to deceive.

The characters will determine the final outcome, but the history and intentions of the NPCs require more preparation than in a standard campaign. NPC motives should not be immediately clear, and twisted, layered reasons for their actions fit well here. Political campaigns benefit from more plot twists than most.

LEAN INTO CHAOS — GM TIPS

Different PC objectives, NPCs with hidden agendas, and reputations on the line will generate a lot of chaos at the table — moments where PCs openly debate and argue with each other, sometimes at length.

As a GM, this might sound like things are getting out of hand. But these moments are expected in this type of campaign, and they are a feature, so don’t panic! When it happens, lean back, savor it, take notes, and build on the chaos unfolding in front of you for the next sessions.

CONCLUSIONS

In summary, even though the mechanics are the same, running a heavy political campaign requires distinct preparation. NPC motives should be layered and complex, and time should be spent developing them before the campaign begins. Figuring out how the NPCs — and the PCs — do not share the same objectives is work that needs to happen at the prep table, not the game table.

I have this post in my Patreon as well, along with art and some adventures and modules there.

Hope you enjoy the reading!
