New clapper pfp is atrocious

I came back from a weekend trip and my boyfriend’s fish gish wasn’t eating, breathing looked labored and he’s super lethargic, the tank felt cold and the heaters weren’t working so I bought him new ones immediately. We got him a hospital tank and fresh treated water, a new heater and hoped that the tank was just too cold and making him lethargic.

It’s been about three days now and he’s gotten worse, same symptoms plus his abdomen looks swollen, he’s mostly stuck on his side, trying to breach often and getting knocked straight back down when he does. Did some googling and I’m hoping he’s constipated.

I did a strictly epsom salt soak in treated water for 15 mins, it recommended I have him fast for three days then feed daphnia which I bought.

More experienced owners, do you think this is the case? What should I do? I’m hating seeing this little guy suffer and I’m trying to do all I can for him :(

Thank you everyone for your help. We will be doing more research before considering another fish. I want to be able to identify any signs something is going wrong so this doesn’t happen again. If we get another, I’ll post the tank, what we plan on feeding, how we plan on taking care of the water etc to make sure we’re doing the right thing. Gish lived a good two years, I hate to say goodbye :( I appreciate this community and its kindness
