Concrete pedestrian refuge islands under construction on 43rd and Skillman Avenues!
The islands on Skillman Avenue are more finished, but I didn't have a chance to get a picture of them today!

We knew that tons of commuters weren't all going to drive to 60th Street, see the signs and start looking for the first "free" parking space. But a bunch of clueless Manhattan drivers had this fantasy and were shameless enough to blather it all over. Reporters and politicians who should have known better repeated it. Let's not do that again when we raise the rates and/or expand the zone!
I've been canvassing for Chuck Park for the past several weeks. I'm sad he won't be getting the nomination for Congress, but proud that all the areas I canvassed in Woodside went for him by 2-1 margins, with large turnouts!
I was looking at this map of the votes, and was struck by the fact that most of the areas that went for Chuck were near subway or Long Island Railroad stations, along the 7 train, the Queens Boulevard line, even the M train! The big exceptions that went for Grace Meng are in central Flushing and the Cord Meyer district of Forest Hills, and for Chuck in scattered patches of Middle Village, Forest Hills, Queensboro Hill and Hillcrest.
It's not too surprising: Chuck made it clear in his interview with Miser that he supports transit and micromobility, and Grace is at best indifferent (to almost everything her constituents care about, but transit in particular).
I'm very sad to hear about the teenager who died yesterday after being thrown from a horse-drawn carriage, and I think this is a great opportunity to ban horse-drawn carriage rides in Central Park.
For years I've resisted proposals to ban horse-drawn carriages in Manhattan, because they've included cockamamie plans for "electric vintage cars" to carry tourists instead.
I'm glad that the current bill, Ryder's Law, just bans horse-drawn carriage without these road hogs. We already have pedicabs. Let's get rid of the carriages!
After the big repave #bikenyc has been waiting for the protected lane return and it's here!
Saw them filling in the #FreshKermit on Skillman residential section this weekend.
Also have been seeing giant numbers of deployments of new trees going in along Jackson Heights to Sunnyside following the route from 34th Ave to end of Skillman.
I had noticed there's now a curb extension in front of Aubergine Cafe at 50th and Skillman (Gary's favorite parking spot). I expect that the DOT will install flexiposts on the edges soon.
Tonight I noticed that they had widened the south crosswalk to meet the curb extension. That'll make it easier to cross from the southeast corner to the northwest corner!
I’m running to represent New York’s 6th Congressional District, which covers neighborhoods in Queens such as Forest Hills, Flushing, Bayside, Woodside, Rego Park, Jackson Heights, Maspeth, Middle Village, Elmhurst, Corona, Briarwood, Fresh Meadows, Auburndale, Oakland Gardens, Pomonok, and Kew Gardens Hills .
I was born in Flushing, a kid of Korean immigrant street peddlers who became storeowners. My origin story and your origin story, all come back to QUEENS, the World's Borough. That's why I’m running to protect us from direct attacks -- from ICE, the Trump Administration, the failing Corporate Dem establishment, and from billionaires rigging the system against us.
I’m running against an out of touch incumbent, and against the corporate class that controls her. My opponent hasn't held a town hall in years. I'll be holding Community Events and Town Halls in different parts of the district every week until the primary election in June (early voting starts June 13th!).
Next Up: BAYSIDE
Join me for a Community Town Hall in Bayside on Saturday, May 30th, where I'll lay out my vision for Queens: universal healthcare, affordable housing, and childcare that works for working families.
Ask questions. Share concerns. Be heard.
Refreshments Provided!
RSVP here: Bayside Town Hall
But for now, AMA! I'll be answering questions today, 5/26, around 1PM.
>Thanks for the great Qs! If you've got more for me, you can find me 1-3p at my town hall in Bayside on Sat 5/30. > >RSVP here > >And don't forget to vote by June 23!
Monday is street sweeping day on the north side of Skillman from 48th to 52nd Street; it's Thursday for the section from 39th to 48th. DOT crews spraypainted the guidelines for the bike lanes and pedestrian refuges, but drivers ignored them as soon as the crews were done. The third photo, of the street sweeping sign, is from Sunday.
I run the Safer Skillman Avenue Facebook page and blog; if anyone wants to organize around getting the one-driving-lane configuration extended west from 50th Street, please get in touch!
How long are we going to be without the Skillman Avenue pedestrian refuges?

It's street resurfacing season! The Department of Transportation has announced that they will be milling, and eventually repaving, Skillman Avenue from Queens Boulevard to 52nd Street.
In past experience, there are weeks or months between when the milling removes the surface of the streets and when the thermoplastic is finally replaced. In between, many drivers pretend that the bike lanes and pedestrian refuges were never there, and park next to the curb. If some drivers respect the old arrangement, the practice is often inconsistent, making the bike lanes and pedestrian refuges useless and leaving the street hazardous to everyone.
Does anyone have any thoughts about how to maintain micromobility and pedestrian space during a street resurfacing?
