Confused
Hi guys, confused intern here. I’m not sure about my fellowship goals and have been told I need to decide relatively quickly considering I’m on a J-1 visa. For me, the options would either be direct fellowship or working as a hospitalist for 3 years before being able to apply for fellowship because of the waiver requirements. I know for sure that I want to specialize, so hospitalist is not really an option for me.
I’m looking for a career with a good work-life balance where I can spend time with my family and future kids while still having enough financial freedom to be independent and help support my parents.
I really like medicine and I feel like I could enjoy almost any specialty honestly but I don’t it to be the focus of my life. I’m more interested in the outpatient setting mostly cause of the stable hours, uninterrupted sleep at night & relatively stable patients.
So far, I really like Endo/GI/Pulm/HemeOnc, but I’m not sure how well they align with my goals. For those already in the field - what are the typical hours, workload, and pay like? How much work do you end up doing outside of your scheduled hours, especially with things like literature review and staying up to date? For Endo, is there any potential to earn close to what GI makes?
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts & advice, thank you!
Good luck with the IVs to everyone that applied!
