Parents of Cornwall, what buggy do you use?

First baby, live in Falmouth so expect lots of beach outings.

Went to the Truro baby store and the sales person very much recommended Mountain Buggy Terrain, but can’t find many reviews of it online.

Interested to hear which ones people like? Looking for one that can work from newborn with a carrycot, but not fussed about buying a car seat separately.

Has anyone got the Mountain Buggy Terrain?

I was pretty much sold on an Out n About Nipper V6, but then went into my local baby store and the staff member raved about the Mountain Buggy!

The Mountain Buggy seemed to have better storage (to the extent that I worried whether the Nipper would be practical for shoving a coat or a picnic blanket in the bottom if going to the beach) and an arguably an easier fold… however, I can’t find as many reviews online and people do rave about the Nipper.

Aesthetically I kinda love the Nipper but absolutely aware that’s not the most important factor!

Would love any thoughts from people who’ve used the Mountain Buggy (or both!).

First time mama, live by the beach and highstreet is cobblestone. Main concern is beach/off road walks, though husband probably will jog with the stroller too.

Witchy / boho / mythological names — help!

I keep also leaning towards names that end in the “ee” (soft e like Marie, rather than hard e like Celeste) or “ahh” sound.

My favourite is Sabrina. I feel like it ticks all these boxes, but husband isn’t sold. In my head that’s what baby is called. Trying hard to find another love rather than pressuring husband into it though.

He prefers Delilah or Jasmine. I don’t mind either of these, but I don’t love them.

I quite like Marina, especially that it can be shorter to Mari or Marie, but we live in a harbour town so it’s a bit too “place not a name” here to be a serious contender.

I did love Calliope a few years ago, but I’ve gone off it after hearing some mispronunciations. I just don’t want to give baby a name she’ll always have to correct.

Names I nearly like but just aren’t quite right: Ariadne, Daphne, Selena, Cassandra, Paloma, Esmeralda.

Names I hate: Sylvie/a, Rhiannon, Camille, Astrid, Iris, Elowen.

I feel like I’m being so pedantic, it’s just so much pressure and so hard to think I’ve found the one only for husband to not feel the same.

(White British, so typically rule out anything that feels like it veers a bit cultural appropriation e.g. Calypso)

Has anyone done the Happy Parents Happy Baby classes?

Wondering if they are worth it for meeting more local parents to be? Have heard the NHS ones have a very scattered cohort so you might not meet people you could reasonably meet up with regularly.

Anyone know much about the HPHB ones? Would be looking at the Falmouth group specifically.

Which high chair did you get? Anyone get the Cybex or the Stokke?

Looking at the 4-in-1 options that have a new born attachment as well as eventually turn into a chair.

I see Stokke everywhere but then got an ad for Cybex and it has rave reviews!

Nipper Pod vs Carry Cot?

From what I’ve read, the nipper pod feels appealing because it’s lighter and doesn’t need adaptors. However, I’m not sure if I’m missing something and struggling to find a clear comparison between the two.

Anyone have these and are able to share experience / logic for purchase?

We live in a beach town so will likely do lots of walks along, sand, coast paths and cobbled streets.

First baby! Keen for all advice!

Thoughts on Camilla?

Particularly keen for UK views because of the whole debacle with the royals.

If it wasn’t for that it would’ve a top tier name for me, I love the nn Cami too, but I just worry the go to reaction might be that baby girl has “that woman’s” name.

What do you think?

Trying to find another name I love as husband isn’t keen on my top choice (Sabrina) and currently rewatching Daisy Jones & The Six and I love hearing people say the name Camilla!

Pregnant and parking: Do you put signs on your car window for space?

I saw something on Instagram where a woman put a sign on her car window driver side saying “I’m pregnant, please leave me some space” so that cars left enough room to open her door wide enough for bump.

We have a council owned guaranteed space, but don’t know the person who has the one next to us (the spaces serve a lot of surrounding roads so it’s not a known neighbour situation where we can speak in person and have literally never run into them!). The spots are a bit tight, as many are here in Cornwall, so I am concerned I soon won’t be able to get in the car if the person next to us parks a bit close or wonky (which they are prone to do on occasion).

Is the note a good idea? How would you react to it? Not sure if it would have the opposite effect and cause annoyance!

(In the UK, if that makes any difference!)

Cannot find any maternity clothes in my style, feeling horrible 😭 Recs?

I have kind of a subtle beachy boho style — I like long skirts and stresses, high rise bottoms and shorter length tops, or longer ones with asymmetric hems, and colour!

Everything I’ve found for maternity just feels so matronly… and also quite formal? Unless you want a striped t shirt.

Just feeling horrible about myself and hating the way my body looks trying to find things that fit but feel like me.

I’ve tried the “just size up” advice a couple of times, but then things don’t fit over my shoulders properly and I just wind up with massive arm holes and my bra showing and I’m out of pocket £10 after postage and return fees 😮‍💨

Any advice on brands to try? Or links to specific items?

ETA: Thanks for all the responses!! I’ve ordered a few things from the Free People sale and H&M 🤞

What was worth buying and what wasn’t?

For example, I’m seeing the Stokke Trip Trap highchairs everywhere — they look brilliant and are £200. Meanwhile Amazon sells a (less impressive looking) highchair for £30. Maybe I don’t need brilliant or maybe it’s a game changer?

What were the things you splurged on that were worth it? And what were the things you scrimped on that felt sensible to do so?

Anything and everything for baby or mama I’d love to know about! It’s my first baby and I only know one other person with a baby, so my pool of knowledge is very limited 😅

Give me every mythical girl name you can think of!

My favourite names all seem to fall into this category, but I’m struggling to find one that husband and I both love.

My personal favourite: Sabrina (because it’s mythic, witchy, boho, and has a softer sound)

Also like, with reasons I don’t love:

Calliope (like the nns Callie and Poppy, don’t love condemning baby to a life of spelling her name)

Ariadne (like the story, not sure about the sound/flow)

Daphne (like the nature/water theme, struggle with Daffy Duck!)

Camilla (loveee the nn Cami, and soft sound of both short and full name, hate the “other woman” vibes as in UK)

Cassandra (like all the nn options, really don’t like the posh arrhhnn sound in the middle)

Don’t like, with reasons why:

Phoebe (too common, too Friends)

Penelope (like the sound, but hate Penny nn)

Iris (too hissy and grandma ish)

Astrid (too much of a harsh stop with the “id” sound)

Athena (too obviously a goddess name rather than a nice name with an interesting meaning)

Please help name nerds! I’m drowning in reading the same options again and again — and discovering I am so fussy!!!

Maternity swimsuit or springsuit recs?

I swim in the sea (south coast Cornwall) and my midwife has said it is safe to continue through my pregnancy, as I’ve been swimming at least twice a week for a good amount of time pre-pregnancy, and only do short dips in the winter.

The best looking swimsuit I’ve found so far is the Next Seraphine — but I usually opt for a colour like red or yellow though for visibility which they don’t have.

Does anyone know of any others? So many look super matronly and/or are only in black!

Long shot but I also live in my BeachBum springsuit through winter, so would be obsessed if there was a brand that did a maternity equivalent! Anyone seen anything?

I’m a UK 10 but usually wear a UK 12 in swimwear because I’m an hourglass shape so have wider thighs and hips, the “shortie” wetsuits typically don’t work for me as the leg holes are too narrow.

Recs for maternity swimsuits?

I live in Cornwall (UK) so the sea will start getting colder again by the time my bump is biggest! Therefore looking for a one piece over a bikini.

So far have only found an option on Next, but don’t love the colour choices.

Any favourites?

What pregnancy apps did you like?

I’ve been using what to expect. I like that there’s something to read everyday and it has things like the baby’s size. I worry it’s a bit US centric though e.g. today it told me the first scan will be between 6-9 weeks, but that’s not true in the UK (midwife appt for bloods but no scan until 12 weeks).

First trimester: how to hide not drinking at a wedding?

Some close friends will be at this wedding, and we all love a glass of wine, so it’s unusual for me not to drink! They would also be comfortable just filling up my glass, so looking for good excuses/ways to hide this.

It’s easier when going up to the bar and ordering for myself. Mainly concerned about prosecco on arrival and wine at the table.

Any tips?

(I don’t want to tell them yet, especially as I suffered a miscarriage earlier in the year so am very nervous about this pregnancy — however, one of them is the type that might bluntly ask “are you pregnant?” if I’m not drinking.)

Explaining first trimester fatigue to husband

Any good resources out there I can share to show how crippling fatigue truly is?

I feel like he thinks I’m “just a bit tired” when I genuinely feel like a zombie — I don’t think I’ve ever felt like my limbs are so heavy and even making a cup of tea is such a mountainous achievement. I don’t think he realises I genuinely mean those things, I’m not over exaggerating.

I spoke to my friend who’s had a baby about it, and she said sometimes she literally napped on the floor because she was too tired to get to bed. Reddit subs also seem to agree with this.

He can need a bit of training on female issues e.g. growing up his mum and sister never told him about period pain, or even if they were on their periods, and then he met one friend who said “running helps my period cramps” and so would to tell me to go for a run if I was struggling until I literally sat him down and explained the reality and shared a load of resources. Now he seems to get it.

With pregnancy, husband is quite focused on what the NHS says, which tbh isn’t a lot. Are there any “respectable” resources anyone knows of that explains what a big deal it really is?
