25G590B - The World's First Native 1000Hz FHD Gaming Monitor (FIRST IMPRESSIONS!)

Hello everyone! Before I get into it, small disclaimer: LG Invited me to attend this event and covered part of my travel expenses. All opinions are my own.

I was fortunate enough to be invited to an exclusive event at LG headquarters earlier today to get a hands-on first look on at the recently-revealed “World's First Native 1000Hz FHD Gaming Monitor” (“native” in this sense meaning there’s no dual mode switching.)

Okay now on to the good stuff:

Specs:
24.5" Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS Display with native 1000Hz refresh rate
Nvidia G-Sync Compatible & AMD FreeSync Premium Supported
VESA DisplayHDR 400
On-device AI features

First impressions:
Overall it’s obvious that the monitor has a particular audience in mind: hard core esports gamers. Want a smaller screen to limit FOV and see more? Check. Newer, smaller footprint design on the monitor stand to let low DPI settings to swing their arm more? Check. Super high native 1000Hz for crystal-clear motion tracking? DOUBLE CHECK.

Also fun fact: until recently, TestUFO could only test up to 950Hz. In preparation for the release of this monitor, LG worked directly with Blurbusters to officially build software capable of testing 1000Hz and beyond! So we were some of the first people to see a 1000Hz signal verified by TestUFO. Super cool experience. Also in the video, you’ll see TestUFO at 1100Hz - you can actually overclock the display!

I would say though, the prospect of a 1000Hz monitor is interesting as it really begs the question: what does it actually take to hit 1000Hz?

At home, I have a 5090 and that coincidently was also the gpu on the test build powering this display. Do you absolutely need a 5090? My honest answer is: it depends. On most AAA games (or most games for that matter) you just aren’t going to hit anywhere close to the max refresh rate of this monitor without a considerable amount of frame gen. What I would say though is there is an argument to be made on this being more of a future-proof display for esports. Even if you aren’t maxing out the display, that still leaves headroom for upgrades down the line and at least you can still have GSync/FreeSync to fall back on for smoothness.

My take is that this is not a monitor for those who want the most immersive experience. Indeed, it isn’t OLED or even ultra-wide (though honestly colors did look great for an IPS). This is a monitor for those who want performance above all else and the people who want that level of performance are mostly playing games that can usually reach those FPS targets (Counter Strike 2, Valorant, League, Apex etc). Needles to say though, you may be able to play lighter weight or older games that aren’t as graphically intensive at those higher rates, but ultimately, you wont get as much from immersion as you would with, say, an LG 5k2k display.

Overall, while I thought the 25G590B was a fascinating piece of display tech, I wonder if it’s enough for esports adoption. With no price currently announced and no current details on response time, I am unsure of what the reception will be. If the goal was to release a super smooth 1000hz monitor that some of the most discerning players out there will appreciate, I think LG hit the mark. It’s obvious that LG is listening as much as they can, I am curious what others will think as they get their hands on this display.

Again, thank you LG for the opportunity and for everyone reading I hope you found something helpful here! More than happy to answer any other questions to the best of my knowledge.

Best Monitor Arm for LG 39in 5k2k?

Hey everyone! Looking for a minimalistic monitor arm that works well with desks pushed up against walls. It’s my first ultra wide so not sure what to look for with monitor arms for monitors of this size. Any tips?

Steam Controller - STEAM INPUT

So I got my controller today and I'll quickly confirm some things others have been saying

  • Controller is light and comfortable. I have medium hands and its comfortable. Closer to Xbox controller feel vs ps5. Plastic feels fine. May get a dbrand wrap.
  • Controls feel mostly great. Face buttons travel time feels great. D-pad is more or less same as steam deck. Shoulder buttons feel great. Triggers, while an upgrade from the steam deck are a weaker point but still good. Still wish there were trigger stops, tbh.
  • Connectivity. Only connected to PC but, yes, you mostly need steam open to get full functionality. My update failed giving my controller a red light, but i was able to go into settings and update my controller manually again and it was fine. With steam minimized though you can control your desktop just fine and even bring up a virtual keyboard from the controller using the same steamdeck inputs ( ... + X). i would recommend increasing sensitivity to 200%+ to make it feel more usable as a mouse though.
  • Overall taking controller at face value, its great.

Steam input and customization is what takes this controller from an 8/10 to something truly revolutionary and something other controllers can't really compete with (for specific use cases).

In addition to the fact that you have many steam deck presets that just fit the controller well, you have near infinite ways to make this controller fit your needs.

For example, in Arc Raiders, one gripe I've always had on controller was managing my inventory. By default, the right trackpad is configured to be the right joystick, so it doesn't change anything in the inventory. Once you change the right trackpad to mouse and map the trackpad click to left click, suddenly you can enable mouse in game anywhere. I increased the track pad sensitivity to 215% and now i am able to manage my inventory by dragging and dropping and bonus - can use the trackpad, still, to aim and shoot if i need extra precision. I can even swipe and do a quick 180 without using stick flick.

In slay the spire 2, i just loaded the steam deck preset and now i can navigate the menu and cards easier with the trackpad.

This is all without using gripsense, gyro, and all the other options you may have access to on this controller.

This controller is going to change how people play games. How have you all been using your controller? Any tips?

Looking for some favorites. Basically car washes without bristles. I have a ceramic coated car and just haven’t had the time to clean my self.

Interior detailing would also be a plus but I really just want to clean the outside lol

Okay so very very weird question. I’m playing Super Mario World using the bsnes core and it I’m getting some sounds/notes cutting out or not playing at all.

Any tips? For example getting a feather 🪶 will cut out half the sound. Or on the first set of stages the high pitched sounds are cut out - it’s weird.

Any tips?

Thinking about the steam controller and I currently run playnite as a front end and was wondering if I added that as a non steam game would be a valid blanket workaround?

Embark has slowly been increasing the durability and strength of the arc the last few updates and end game arcs have always been a challenge to destroy. Fireflies will chew through not just ammo now, but guns.

All the durability nerfs are going to do is make it so that people have to maybe carry an extra gun in their inventory or risk being weapon less. And that’s just for PvE.

For PvP - you’re just going to have more people run free kits because now everything else just got more expensive to maintain.

We’re not even talking about the loot reallocation on the map which is arbitrarily forcing encounters if you want loot which will exacerbate the situation further.

My tin foil hat take is that this HAS to be a temporary update to force inventory wipes since people are hoarding guns. There’s no way this is actually sustainable or fun long term for ANYONE.

First in my family to get this far. 32M. Looking to see if this seems … optimized? I know not the right word. My IRA is more focused because it’s taken what I’ve learned and I started a few years ago with a clean slate. My general brokerage account still has some stragglers (like NIO) but I’ve been working the last year or so by cutting my losses and reallocating some of the capital into ETFs. Overall, I am up about 27% in my normal brokerage and 63% in my IRA. I’ve had my general brokerage since 2021 and IRA since 2023.

Overall since I am young I am leaning ETFs but I’ve had a few big wins like AMD (+214%) in my general brokerage that has caused the balance to be a little off. And while I’d take some profits to rebalance, it’s not in a tax advantaged account so I’m a little stuck and just investing heavier into the ETFs to rebalance.

Anyways - any tips? Allocation make sense? Is DES/DON a smart play? Any help would be great! Want to build for my family and then some.
