Meet our foster fail!

I rescued a feral mom and her litter of 5 gorgeous kittens- and they’re all getting ready for spay and neuter and going to their forever homes. Except this one! We’re keeping her! A friend told me about chimera cats- and I don’t know a ton, but I’m curious if anyone here thinks so? Doesn’t matter to me either way; just would be neat if she was!

Rescuers a feral litter- and we’re keeping this one! Chimera?

I learned about Chimera cats after sending a friend pictures of this beautiful kitten; does anyone think it’s possible? Two of her legs on opposite sides are orange and striped; and she has a beautiful mixed coat throughout. I don’t know the specific parameters; and I don’t really care either- just thought be it would be neat to know!

Help with water resistant finish?

I have this wood piece here that’s accidentally a backsplash as it’s behind the main kitchen sink. My friend recommended progressive sanding, and 2+ coats BLO…which I’ve done. Now I’m ready to top coat / seal and I had this shellac can that I thought was the right stuff; but the more I read the fine print, it says not to be used as a top coat. What’s best for a novice to seal off this area for regular water exposure, that isn’t problematic with BLO? Thanks!

I released mom (after spay and weaned kittens) and she’s SO UPSET- advice?

Kittens are 10+ weeks- just waiting for their appointment next week for S&N and they will go to great homes. We’re keeping one. Backstory- mom is a total feral who had her litter hiding in my front yard. Trapped them to get them inside while kittens nursed and got healthy. They’ve been here for three weeks. (I think she moved them here right before I found them- there’s no way they would have gone 4-6 weeks unheard or unseen). Moms hated every moment of it- and even escaped once, but got scared and came back. She opened the window and jumped onto our roof. Anyway- the kittens are all fully on food. Nursing 1x a day at night to go to sleep. We had to trap mom again to take her to the vet because she’s a vicious feral- even after weeks of showing her it’s safe. I struggled with bringing her back in for two reasons.
1- The kittens showed tremendous progress on socializing and weight gain in the 72 hours she was gone. 3/5 were always fairly friendly, but cautious- and two were very spicy. The two spicy ones came around almost immediately and are now the most affectionate.
2- She HATED being inside and just looked out the window every moment the sun was out. She was also (I thought) kinda getting over her kittens. Getting a little nippy and impatient. I didn’t want to have to trap her a third time to release her once they were rehomed

At the end of the day, one way or another she’s gonna say goodbye to the babies. When we loaded her up for the vet I held every kitten to the cage for a few to make sure she saw all of them and they saw her. I opted to release in my yard and leave food out for her. She not only has been loudly crying outside all day- but figured out how to perch herself outside of the window the where the kittens stay. It’s killing me. The kittens are not impacted at all when they hear her meow. If they were- I’d leave the window open for her to hop in. This is really hard. Any advice on how to make mom feel more at ease?

Foster stray- terrified of tower fan

I’ve taken in a feral mama cat and her 5 kittens. They’ve been here for about 5 days (waiting for nursing to end to fix and rehome everyone). Anyway, we’re in a heat wave; and I know cats hate ceiling fans- so I just bought a pricey tower fan to keep the room cool, because yesterday it got scary warm. She seems to also be really anxious about that. Hiding in corner, panting, darty eyes. I can use it sparingly, but we don’t have AC, so no fan isn’t really an option. Any tips? I have it on the quiet setting, and no oscillation so she can avoid the breeze if she wants. Thanks!

Update from last post- caught everyone!

In an incredible turn of events after our first trap attempt malfunctioned and spooked mama cat- patience and mackerel got not only her, but ALL FIVE kittens in the trap at once (a big square trap, not the walk in small ones).

Anyway; everyone’s inside. Kittens have adjusted no problem. Moms protective; but not mean or aggressive. However- I think she’s pregnant?! Her kittens are about 5-6 weeks old, and for being a stray she has a very very round large belly. My research shows to look at her nips for “pinking out”- but I only got to see her nips for the first time yesterday. And yea- they’re kinda big and pink- but she’s nursing.

Everyone’s in a safe quarantine room until kittens are weaned and at weight for S&N, mom will wait with them until then. But any other tips on how to tell? I’m worried she’s like close to fully baked here. I suppose she could just be a fat stray; but her body is slender except for her belly area. She also will not let me touch her, so I can only visually look from a foot or so away.

Also- kittens are in great shape for strays. No eye or nose infections, and so clean! I can’t find any fleas; but not ruling them out. She’s a really great mom. 🐾

Unexpected litter arrival

I’m in Sonoma county, CA..and this one cats been lurking our property for a month or so. I was suspicious she was pregnant; and I was right…but she clearly was pregnant a while back because there’s a litter of 5 kittens about 3-4 weeks in my yard. Mama is docile; not super spicy, but doesn’t want me around her kids. I’m feeding mom, and calling everywhere to help with a T&R with no luck yet.

My worry is that mom can’t be fixed until kittens are weaned fully; so should I just worry about trapping mom, and getting everyone inside for a few weeks- even though I know that will stress mom out? I’m worried the kittens will start to scatter, unchecked and unfixed if I don’t act soon. Visibly they look ok, eyes are clean, coats are clean, bellies are full.

HELP! I’m happy to foster everyone but I’m not sure if I should trap and keep mom or trap and fix first? Our rescues are overwhelmed here and backlogged so I’m not getting anywhere with best course of action.

Old caddy- window motor replacement?

I’ve got a 59 Cadillac that has power windows; the other day I rolled it down halfway; and tried to roll it back up and it wouldn’t. Not on either switch. But, it could go down more? So seems I have half a connection? Would this mean I need to replace the motor; or likely some sort of wiring? Thanks!

Hi all- my long dental journey summarized is I grew up poor; so access to proper dental care didn’t happen until I started making my own money. About 15 years ago- I spent thousands and thousands doing major repairs; lots of root canals and crowns, even a bridge. Fast forward to current day; damage from a tongue ring and the aforementioned left my bottom two front teeth hanging on by a thread. I went to a well regarded cosmetic dentist in my area, who kind of refused to explore options with me in advance given the risk of losing those two bottom teeth. They were very much on borrowed time. Anyway; in hindsight I should have been more firm about the game plan first before we started treatment…but I have horrendous dental anxiety, and again, timing was of the essence. Long story short- they pulled those two teeth and prepared the neighbor teeth for a bridge, as well as a bone graft. THEN the dentist said I need to have some specialist review all my old crown work as it’s appeared to be failing based on bone loss in x rays. All that said- they did this temp bridge thing and THEN told me we need to make a plan for dentures or implants.

My teeth are beyond saving; which I was very vocal about at the beginning; but the dentist ensured me that it wasn’t that bad, and I’m so young we should really focus on retention and repair. So, I basically spent $10K to have this god awful fake ass looking temp bridge thing that yellowed immediately in the bottom half of my mouth. Fortunately my mouth is kinda small, and when I talk or smoke you mainly see my top 6 teeth, which appear healthy enough- everything else is problematic.

They (this dentist) can do the implants; but not the removal and post install- of course that’s a different specialist. Through them + specialist the entire treatment plan with temps and perms is about $90K. For dentures; about $11k for partials (which doesn’t solve the longer term problem). I have so many issues with this. The first is they didn’t listen to me from the jump, and I blew a substantial amount of money to be in worse shape than before…and second they are persistent in telling me how much I will hate dentures and to do everything I can do get the implants. Who the fuck has $90K laying around for implants?! My parents both have dentures, and they do both hate them (discomfort, not how they look).

So I guess what I’m asking is, who has some stories on why dentures were the better choice for them? If you could afford the implants; would you do that instead? I’m not even 40- and this is literally causing me to lose sleep. No matter what route I take; it’s going to be with a different dental practice; I really feel robbed by these guys; and not heard whatsoever. Not to mention I was very transparent how bad my anxiety is; and I meet with someone different almost every time I’m there for one reason or another. I do plan to spend the next couple days researching other implant specialists in other states. I’m in CA and I’ve read this is the most expensive state to have cosmetic work done.

Part of me thinks I do the partials as a temporary solution to save for the implants- but even my mom advised against that. Do you love your dentures, would you do it again, different? Sorry for the rant I really could use some advice (and minimal horror stories PLEASE). I plan to ask the similar question in an implants sub. Thank you!
