Uncirculated and still in packaging

I inherited this 1971 S, uncirculated silver dollar many years ago. It's still in its original packaging along with the envelope. As I was inspecting it closer, I noticed this across the "1". The plastic sleeve doesn't seem to be damaged at all. Normally, I would chalk it up to PMD.

Is this a chipped die or greased die? If so, would it be worth grading? No plans to sell.

1776-2026 ASE

I just received a couple of 1776-2026 Proof ASE's from the Mint. One of them is a gift and the other one is for me.

I noticed that they looked like they had debris under the holder. I cracked one open, and without touching it, put it into my own holder. I noticed that there is debris and bumps on the coin.

Is this normal for a proof coin from the Mint? Can the debris be removed without scratching?

I was thinking about getting the other one graded but unless it would come back a 70, I would pass. It's in the same condition. I don't plan on ever selling.

Unintentional neat idea

I saw this ad on Instagram for the US Mint. They are advertising the 2026 Morgan and Peace Dollar. I know it's for the traditional whole bullion but they only put the portraits in the ad. It got me thinking, is there a 1oz Morgan or Peace portrait-only silver piece out there? I think that would be a really cool collectors item. Or even laser carved out of the Morgan or Peace dollar itself. It kind of hurts me to say that but in the name of curiosity and art I think it would be neat.

1947. Nickel

I inherited a small Canadian coin collection from my grandparents years ago and I've slowly been going through them. I came across this 1947 nickel and immediately noticed the dot as an error. Looking into it a little further, it seems to be a fairly valuable coin.

I'm not very skilled with my grading yet but I'm thinking this is either XF or AU 50. What are your thoughts? Also, does it appear to be cleaned? The front doesn't seem to be but the back looks like it might have been.

Happy Father's Day!

New incoming niece - gift ideas?

My brother is having a baby soon (about 3 months to go) and I'd like to get the kid started off on the right foot with some silver. I was thinking of getting the 2026 West Point Morgan Silver Dollar coming out in August from the Mint.

Before I pulled the trigger on anything I thought the Silverbugs community would have some good suggestions. I'm not afraid to pay a premium but I'm not made of money, think $250 budget max.

It's a girl and she'll be born in Texas in 2026. Do you have any cool or unique suggestions for a silver gift?

New acquisitions

Picked up these two beauties while on vacation in Roswell, NM today. We were in a large antique store and they were asking $70 each. I offered $65 each and they took it!

The ring of death is on the plastic casing only. Other than fingerprints the coins are pretty clean.

Inflation: An anecdotal adventure

Last year my wife and I decided to purchase a home so I really started watching our expenses. I now have enough data to start properly nerding out. Below is my 12 month rolling average for a couple of categories. This is for a family of three. Note, we moved into a new house in March 2025 which decreased my driving distance to work by about half and significantly decreased our gas and electric bill (went from a 1970s home to a 2018 home).

Since I started tracking, my monthly expenses have changed accordingly:

Groceries are up 2.7%

Gasoline is up 4.1%

Natural Gas is down 23.9%

Electric is down 2.0%

It's only 7 data points but it'll be very interesting to see how the next couple of months will play out and effect our pocketbook. I filled with my car with $58 worth of gasoline this weekend. It wasn't cheap. In February, that same trip to the gas station would have been about $29.

Best investment account for teen investor

I've been talking to my daughter about investing and we set up an E-Trade account for her. We put in some money and bought a share of SPY and it's done well.

We've talked about her putting more money in her account from each paycheck but I've come to realize that we're not able to (or we can't figure out how to) buy fractional shares.

What is a good investment account that will allow her to put $50/paycheck and buy some fractional ETF shares?

The Silver Swan Automaton (1773). No motors, no electricity, just pure clockwork genius. Built over 250 years ago and it still works flawlessly.

This is the Silver Swan, a life-sized automaton built in 1773 by mechanical genius John Joseph Merlin (with inventor James Cox).

I've come across a lot of pennies that have this wear in the same place. While most wear seems to be smooth across the full face of a penny, a lot of them have this weakness in the same area in STATES and into E PLURIBUS.

What causes this abnormality in this particular location? Is it just wear or is there something else going on in the minting process? Have others seen this or am I making it up in my head?

I got this on a live auction on TikTok from a reputable seller and paid $145 for it. How'd I do?
