Advice on moving to Australia and options, best way to start?

Me and my wife and our 6 month old baby are looking to start a new life abroad after living in England since birth.
I’m a software developer and my wife is a prescribing pharmacist. Im 34 turning 35 next year and wife is 2 years younger. I’m only giving my age as I’ve heard age is a big factor in the application of becoming a resident, although I don’t know if this is true. Before anything, no I’m not looking to get away from the cost of living crisis over here and the extortionate rent/housing costs. I know Australia and other countries are all going through similar periods. I’m also not expecting to move and for it to be all sunshine and rainbows, all my family are in England so it will be a very tough move emotionally but I want to give my daughter a better start in life than I ever had, and I feel like moving to a country where the sun is more present and the people are more friendly is going to help with that..but I will miss those cosy winter nights in England. I currently own a property in England which we want to sell before we move and bank all the money but take little bits out to help fund our move but also keep a backup of those funds incase it does not work out.

I’ve been looking primarily at Sydney and Melbourne, these are the biggest tech company cities in AUS for software devs. Pharmacist roles seem to be consistent throughout each city. I have recently been diagnosed with ADHD which explains a hell of a lot to me about myself. I’m not sure if this will interfere with the move? Personally it’s never affected my career as I’ve kept it quiet and undisclosed.

Does anyone here have any experience of moving from the UK/England to Syd or Melb? Should I start applying for remote software jobs in AUS and work from England until my job is solid enough to initiate the move? Should I go all out sell the home tomorrow and just go? How do I start? Are there any agencies out there which help with the move?

Thanks in advance

Octopus is trying to charge me peak hour rates

Hi all I’m on IOG directly connected to my VW ID3. Nearly every day I plug in my charger which is a granny charger and I always check every day the slots octopus assigns for charging and I can always see the car start and end on time. My charge cap is turned on so I only charge at cheap rates. However looking at my usage data for the week just gone, nearly every day they’ve put all my charging and general usage at the peak rate and zero for my EV. I spoke to them on the phone and they seem to think I’m using 17-20+kwh every other day and not charging properly (we are a 2 person household). I assured them it’s definitely charging within the cheap slots the app assigned. They said to wait another week and see if it changes. Has anyone faced this issue recently?

Referrals for EV home charger installation?

Hi all

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but has anyone got any referrals or know of any referral schemes to get a home charger installed? Looking to get the ohme home pro or any other that connects up to Octopus’s smart EV tariffs. Looking to get it installed right away. And on a side note, do you recommend any installation companies? I live in Buckinghamshire and have a VW ID3.

Thanks in advance!

First time EV owner, any advice appreciated

Hi all

I’m new to this sub and the EV world. Long story short our diesel car’s engine seized up and we were given a ID3 as a courtesy car and completely loved it. So much so we’ve now purchased one just yesterday from VW Approved Used! Specifically a 2023 VW ID3 Family Pro Performance with 57k miles and 95+% battery health.

I know nothing about the EV world, only that I need to get a home charger installed this week. My options are the Ohme home pro, Ohme epod or the Easee one. Ohme installed by Octopus at 999 I believe or Easee installed by Fuse energy for 899. Which should I go for?

Also I’ve learnt that public chargers need some sort of RFID card or subscription? I’ve only seen Octopus Electroverse but is there any other recommendations?

Anything else I need to know?

Thanks in advance!!

Investing for my child’s future, have I created a good pie split?

Hi all
So our daughter was born a couple weeks ago and I want to get started early for her future. At the moment I am thinking of splitting the investment between VWRP 80%, VUAG 15% & VFEG 5%. I wouldn’t class this as aggressive growth since it’s heavily weighted to the FTSE all world. Plus my plan is to have this ready for her when she’s between 25-30 years old which gives a lot of time for growth. For this reason I’m not using a Junior ISA, but my own S&S ISA allowance.

Does this look like a good split between the funds I have chosen or can anyone recommend a more popular split/or more appropriate funds? Looking for the best growth possible, don’t mind some risk as it’s such a long term.

Thanks in advance.

Looking to switch to a new fixed deal. Moving away from octopus.

Hi all I’ve come across this fixed deal from Fuse Energy which I’ve never heard of. Is this a good deal and does anyone have experience of being with fuse energy? In a couple months time we are thinking of getting an electric car and I noticed they don’t have a WV tariff unless I’ve missed it. Would appreciate some input! Thank you
