Being forced into a PM role after being a UX designer. Feeling lost and confused

I have worked as a UX designer for four years at a major company in the US. Earlier this year, my company had major layoffs and got rid of all remote employees. Thankfully, I am in person and was not affected by the layoffs.

As a result, the company has been trying to utilize AI to do a lot of the work. This means that all design work is being fed into Figma Make and the designs it spits out is what is supposed to be used. I have a lot of thoughts and opinions on this, but I’ll save those for another day. Leadership does not see the value of having designers and is now making all of us become PM’s. They want to run more lean teams and have higher production with AI to help us.

This has been tough for me to say the least. I have tried so hard to keep an open mind and embrace the new career path, but who I am as a person does not mesh well with being a PM. I am very introverted and I’m not a huge fan of sitting in meetings all day talking. I can’t stand looking at Jira boards and filling out PowerPoint product strategy decks. Frankly, I’m not an organized person either. Trying to remember every little detail of the project is overwhelming and difficult.

Before anyone says it, I do see a lot of similarities between UX and being a PM, so it’s not like I’m learning a whole new language, but they certainly are not the same. I’m also aware that the job market is tough for UX and that job role is changing greatly.

Anyone been in a similar position? How did you handle it? I need this job… I have bills to pay, but I hate that I had no say in doing this. I know I’ll ultimately struggle and not do well, but I’m not sure what to do.

All magic party?

I’m close to finishing my first honor mode run, but my whole party is melee/archer. I want to try a run where my whole party is magic based. So Gale as a wizard and Wyll as a warlock, then my tav as a sorcerer and then maybe respec someone as a Druid? At least before I get Halsin or Jaheira.

Just want to try something fun as I’ve never really used magic based characters before. Good synergy between everyone is a plus!

I wonder who the most recent ancestor between my wife and I is

I was reading tonight about pedigree collapse, which is the idea that the farther back you go, the same ancestors begin appearing multiple times in your family tree because distant relatives eventually married one another.

My wife is Korean, and I’m American with mostly Northern European ancestry. Our recent family histories couldn’t look much more different. But if you go back far enough, at some point our family trees must have crossed.

Was it a merchant traveling the Silk Road 1,500 years ago? A family that migrated across Central Asia? Some person whose descendants slowly spread both east and west over hundreds of generations?

There’s no way to know, and that’s what makes it fascinating.

It also made me think about the sheer number of lives that have come before us. Billions of people over thousands of years. Most completely forgotten. Some lived quiet, ordinary lives. Others had incredible adventures. They all loved someone, worried about something, laughed, grieved, hoped for the future… and somehow every one of us today exists because of an unbroken chain connecting back through them.

And now it’s midnight, and instead of sleeping, I’m thinking about people who lived 3,000 years ago.

Just saw the Odyssey and want ti try this game. Didn’t like Shadows or Valhalla… is this one good?

I know I’m on this sub and there is a strong bias, but I’d love some honest opinions. I watch the Odyssey a few days ago and I loved it, so I even read the book the past couple days. I’d love to play this game as it seems like it would scratch the itch.

However, I played Shadows and Valhalla and honestly I didn’t like them at all. The story of Shadows was a mess and made it hard to enjoy the rest of the game (which mechanically was great). Valhalla was way too bloated and I never finished it.

Is AC Odyssey similar to these games?

Edit: thanks for all the replies! Based on this, I think I’ll definitely get it.. but will wait for a sale lol. And I should have mentioned that I know it’s not a game based on the book, but I’ve enjoyed the Greek mythology, so that’s been the bigger draw.

Long international flight with 7 month old. Any advice?

My wife and I are flying from the US to South Korea for her sisters wedding. We are bringing our son, who will be 7 months old when we fly. It’s a 14 hour flight and I’m already worried about what will happen. He’s been such a good baby so far, but 14 hours on a plane is tough.

Anyone done this before? Any advice?

Finally did an evil run. Never again

I actually hated this character. I wanted to see how different the game could be compared to my normal good runs and it really was interesting to see a completely different outcome.

What a game. Absolutely brilliant. Now to start another good run to cleanse myself from Bhaal.

Has anyone brought a Q3 43 to a sports game?

I want to take photos at a game I’m going to this weekend. The stadium policy is:

“Compact Cameras (still only), and binoculars are permitted inside Bank of America Stadium as long as their use does not interfere with the event or other guests' enjoyment of the event. Video Cameras, Go Pro's, tripods, monopods, selfie-sticks, and cameras with a detachable lens are not permitted inside Bank of America Stadium. Camera cases must be in compliance with the clear bag policy.”

Technically, the Q3 43 meets these guidelines. It can, however, be considered a professional camera. I know it probably comes down to if the security says anything, but would love to hear if anyone has done this before.

LPT: do not watch About Time as a new dad

My wife knew what she was doing when she had us sit down to watch it last night. I figured it would be a nice little romcom to watch with our two month old sleeping next to us.

I’m a wreck still this morning. I’m not opposed to a few tears every now and then, but I can’t recall the last time I sobbed like I did while watching that movie.

I know for a fact that I never followed this account. How is this possible?

I’m positive that the other people who follow this account would not have chosen to follow a heavy duty machinery account as well. They are all street photographers and other artists. I have a feeling this company bought the page from another account that used to be more aligned with street photography, but I’m not sure if there is a way to find that out.

Just curious more than anything.

How come I get a notification for one persons new posts?

There is a photographer I follow who whenever he posts, I get a notification for it. It will say “XXXX just shared a post.” It doesn’t do this for anyone else. Every other notification I have is only regarding my own posts (who liked, comments, etc), so it’s odd that I’m getting this. And no.. I did not turn on notifications for him.

I don’t even interact with his page often, in fact I’ve actively ignored it because these notifications are annoying. I haven’t liked a post by him in over a year as well.

I’m just curious if he’s paying for this or something? He’s a pretty well known photographer with over a million followers, so perhaps that helps?
