What’s the vegetable you cannot get enough of, and what is your favourite way to prepare it?
reddit.comBain Colonial is actually amazing.
Maybe it’s Tuesday nights, but I popped into BC tonight at around 6:30, and it was absolutely hopping with sexy dark Latino and Québécois men. The vibe is nice, the sex is all over, and the facilities are clean. What more could you ask for?
Free to Love sucks. There I said it.
I have given these guys every ounce of my fandom that I have. They are the best, and the breadth of their work and the variation in the songs that I love is astonishing. Future Past is one of their greatest works, and even Danse Macabre had moments of shining beauty. Their last single is the worst thing they’ve ever put out, and I’m including Out of My Mind. I’m shocked that they put any time into this.
A fascinating little footnote in the history of the New Romantics.
I’d never heard about this language at all, and I’m a bookish 55 year old gay man. This guy is great!
You are forced to give up hearing any more Duran Duran songs for the rest of your life, except for one. Which do you choose?
reddit.comAt the time, when we collectively realized that The Return was (in large part) a satire of nostalgia, it felt to me a little…trivial. Since then, though…
…it’s obvious he was onto something very important. Maybe I’m slow, because it seems pretty clear now, but the world’s embrace of authoritarianism seems very rooted in nostalgia. I follow an Instagram account of recreated scenes of Christmas from various time periods (yes it’s AI please don’t come after me I try to limit my consumption!) and the top comment is why can’t moms stay at home and look after the kids while dad’s at work. The top comment!
So many people are so afraid of the future that they want to go back to some idealized time that they’ve either lived through or have bought into through the “great again” propaganda crap that is flooding a lot of political discourse now. The problem is, well one of them, is that it all conveniently omits the problems of those eras. Lack of choice for women, for starters, invisibility or worse for minorities, contempt for gay or trans folks, othering, bullying, etc, not to mention….
The Return showed us the grotesque inevitability of trying to return, the unintended perversion of it, the catastrophic consequences. In the end we don’t even recognize ourselves as what we thought we wanted turned out to be unachievable. Lynch knew this and maybe his final gift was using his cultural phenomenon from what’s now considered to be peak era happiness to hold up a funhouse mirror on what happens when we turn from imagination and curiosity and bravery toward the familiar and the comfortable to soothe as the same way it once did.
What is your favorite black and white music video?
For me, probably a toss-up between Love Will Never Do Without You by Janet Jackson, The Chauffeur by Duran Duran, and Wicked Game by Chris Isaak.
What are the worst covers of all time?
I just heard an inexplicable version of Sign o’ the Times by Nina Simone and that’s what prompted this question. And I know that 911 Is a Joke by Duran Duran is going to appear here, as it should, but please just not too many upvotes lol.
We all know the boys pioneered music videos. Which shots from those early years are so iconic that they are indelibly etched in our collective memories?
Of course we have Simon on the prow, Simon on the prowl, Simon on the windmill, Simon on the Eiffel Tower. But from 1981 to 1986, what are the shots from their videos that live in your mind rent free?
