What I like about this story is how it shakes up the lore of Batman a bit. At this point Bill Finger was writing Batman for 15 years and he was still so creative. I think Finger’s ‘50s Batman comics are overall my favorite period for the character next to Alan Grant and Norm Breyfogle stories of the late ‘80s/early ‘90s.
In this case we have Bruce Wayne discovering a bat costume belonging to his father. In the ensuing narrative we discover his father was targeted for his brave stance against a mobster by the name of Lew Moxon. During a masquerade ball Thomas Wayne is dressed as a bat before being accosted by gangsters to save their mob boss Lew Moxon.
Wayne fights back and in turn sets forward into motion the fateful night in crime alley.
Plus we have some cool blimp action and Batman acro-bating from plane to blimp.
It’s an epic story and it’s only 10 pages. Drawn beautifully by Sheldon Moldoff and Stan Kaye.
At one point Commissioner Gordon becomes Batman for a day and takes on some ne’er-do-wells. When Batman comes back to town and bids, as Bruce Wayne, to be Batman for a day the idea seems ludicrous to the public. Plus Robin is stellar in this story as he guides each new Batman in their crusading.
That’s the silver age for you, folks.
I told another redditor that I’d dig this out and so I have.
