do these branches seem safe to use?

hi hi!

i'm a noob at collecting my own stuff for my bioactive builds so i'm wondering if these branches I gathered seem safe to use? can someone identify what's on the bark?

for reference I gathered the one of the left from a fallen tree and broke it off, the one on the right i'm more worried about because i gathered it off the ground near the tree and it looks more worn out.

I gathered them yesterday, just now hosed them down and scrubbed. all closeup photos are of the branch from the right, what are these black/green dots on the last photo? they don't seem to come off when scrubbing

thanks in advance!!!

threat assessment?

found centipedes in my crested gecko vivarium. I suspect they hitched the bromeliads i recently planted even though I treated them with warm water and white vinegar and almost killed them in the process.
I keep power orange isopods and springtails, though i barely see springtails so i was planning on adding more to the population.
any ideas which type of centipede this is? i'm in eastern europe if it helps. I added my two bromeliads about a month and a half ago and first noticed this guys yesterday. I was sitting next to my terrarium for more than half an hour just now and got 5 of these guys out. they're fast and have been hiding under the litter so i suspect that's why i didn't see them. all are quite small, this is the largest one in the video. they're smaller than the adult isopods.

what should i do? any advice is appreciated. should i tear down the whole thing or keep hunting them? how big of a threat are they? this is genuinely driving me insane because i always almost kill my plants with my white vinegar sprays and hot water soaks and this still happens

for owners: how bad are their poops?

hi! i'm thinking of getting a leachie and the #1 deterring me is that i've heard their poops are extremely smelly. I keep my reptiles in my bedroom so a smell so strong that would wake me up (i've heard it happening) is a good enough reason for me to reconsider getting a leachie.

all in all i would love to hear your experiences especially if you keep your leachie in your bedrooms, how bad is it really?

thanks in advance

thinking about getting a leachie | feedback/advice

hi hi! so as the title says i'm considering adding a leachie to my gecko family. I currently own a crested gecko and a gargoyle gecko. i'm commissioning a gecko shelf and the top row will have 115cm x 50 cm (length x width) (45.3 × 19.7 inch).

i was originally planning on getting a chahoua but due to my inability to find one and considering the chahoua terrarium would leave open space in the shelf i've considered a leachie.

my questions are:

  1. are these dimensions something that can be worked around for an adult terrarium? i've seen many variations in sizes of terrarium so i'm not 100% certain. i could do a 36x18x45 inch. i've seen a 36x24x36 record so i assume a 36x18x45 would also be fine because it makes up for the lack of depth for length but i'd appreciate if someone could inform me if these dimensions are outdated or unsuitable! if so i'd unfortunately have to reconsider getting a leachie because those are my space limitations for the shelfs weight and size.

  2. this question is more specifically aimed for anyone who possibly keeps them in their bedroom: i've heard their poop smell is quite horrible and hard to clean, how bad does it really get? i keep my pets in a bioactive enclosure in my room so if the smell is unbearable and difficult to clean despite having a bioactive i'll reconsider

  3. for bioactives: how difficult is it to maintain the plants? i've heard they are big plant squashers, is it manageable with hardy plants?

  4. if anyone owns other new cals: are there any notable care differences?

In advance i have to say that i appreciate if anyone took their time to read and respond! feel free to share pictures of your moldy croissant gecko :D

inspo for bio terrarium hardscaping?

hi! i'll be building my gargoyle gecko her forever home terrarium, i plan to do bioactive and I'd love to see other peoples designs for inspiration! hardscaping inspo

I really like the idea of having cork bark tubes come out of the backdrop and create hides, i've seen a few pictures of that

this will not be my first bioactive but the first one i did has rather simple hardscaping

how to remove water stains?

Any advice on how to remove water stains? I've tried scrubbing with a brush but it doesn't help too much. i'm scared to use vinegar, will it harm the springtails and isopods?

Another question, i've reorganized a few things in her terrarium and it left a sort of empty spot as you can see in this picture next to her, any advice on what to put here? Her feeding ledge used to be here but the isopods kept climbing to eat her food out of the cork bark so i moved it.

adult size tank?

hi everyone, i currently have a crested gecko and gargoyle, i'll have some extra space on my "reptile" shelf so i'm considering getting another gecko and researching, i'm mainly considering chahouas but I wanted to learn more about leachies and consider them too. does anyone have any links to good, non outdated resources to learn about their care? the few sites i visited have varying terrarium size recommendations.
also how long does it typically take them to reach their adult size?
thank you!

change in pattern?

My 6 year old crestie developed these darker spots on her body over the last year. The scales seemingly look undamaged, she has been behaving as usual (though she was always skinny and a bad eater). they darken with her body when she fires up.
Does anyone know what could be causing this? just wanted to hear a second opinion because they haven't gone away.

Do you own any other new cal species?

If you do own any other new cal gecko how has your experience keeping them compare to owning a crested gecko? Which new cal is your favorite?

I have a crestie and a gargoyle, i'm kinda debating on either adding a chahoua to the family or another crestie, i'm curious to hear about your experiences with different species and how they differ from cresties!

how does your chahoua compare to other new cals?

hi everyone!

i currently own a crested gecko and a gargoyle, i'm heavily considering adding a chahoua to the family so i'm very curious if anyone would like to share their experience on how their chahoua compares to their crestie or garg if you also own one.

what have been the main differences in owning? their temperament? food drive and diet?

I have place on my gecko shelf for another 18x18x36 (45x45x90) terrarium so i thought a chahoua could be the perfect addition

best tank size?

When I first got my garg I had 18x18x36 inch in mind (45x45x90cm) to put on top of my crested gecko terrarium on a shelf, but with the newer research on gargoyle geckos showing that they are not as arboreal as cresteds and are more semi-arboreal and do better in longer less vertical tanks I'm not sure what to do. I've definitely also noticed that mine isn't a big climber and as we all know their toe pads are less sticky as cresteds so it makes sense.
I don't want to risk injury if falling from a height or to get a tank that is not optimal but i'm unsure what other dimension to go with because I have limited horizontal space.
Any thoughts on a 18x24x24? (45x60x60cm)
Thanks in advance!

did i mess up?

hello everyone!

this might be an unusual post for this subreddit but i'm really looking for advice. I bought two bromeliads for my crested gecko vivarium, i'm not certain but i believe they are Vriesea and Guzmania. the guzmania I planted into the soil while i tied the vriesea to cork bark because i read bromeliads don't necessarily need soil and do better without soil, just watering the tank. Is that correct? Can anyone advise me if i made a mistake?

the second thing i'm worried about is the flowers.. they were bought with flower like stems in the middle, one red and one yellow, i believe those are the beginnings of her flowering stage but i'm unsure. As you can see I cut them as much as i could with trying to minimally injure the leaves because i've read that once the bromeliad starts growing a flower it will die within a few months so it's best to cut it to prolong its life. is that true?

This was a last minute plant pick because the plant i already had in the enclosure developed scale so I needed to take it out to treat it asap. I'm really hoping these bromelids don't die and that i didn't mess up. Thanks for any advice in advance

had to redo my tank, any advice?

I had a schefflera in the backdrop of the tank that ended up getting scale so I impulsively took it out today and redid the tank. It was all pretty sudden and quick because I didn't want to risk infecting the plants I had and the plant dying.

The plants i added are:
🌱 Vriesea (Bromeliad)
🌱 Fittonia
🌱 Guzmania (Bromeliad)

The plants I had:
🌱 Pothos
🌱 Philodendron hederaceum

My question is regarding the bromeliads, this is my first experience with them and I read so many mixed things. First of all, the one on the right (vrisea) i tied to the cork bark because I read that their roots are epifine plants and that I just need to water the tank (middle). For the guzmania (its on the left behind the coconut hide) i planted it in the soil because the plant store lady convinced me the plant that big would die without soil and that it absolutely needs soil, but i'm scared I messed up by planting it.
Also i read online that the flower in the middle needs to be cut to prolong its life and if it has a flower it will likely die within a year, all of the ones in the store had a flower so i just bought them and cut it, but i'm not even sure if that was necessarily a flower or just the part of the plant that later produces the flower, it was in the middle and bright red on both plants. AHHH i totally freestyled this and i'm hoping for the best but i feel like i messed up everything. any advice is appreciated

Schefflera in my crested gecko vivarium is extremely sticky for months, pest or normal?

I have a bioactive crested gecko enclosure with a Jungle Dawn LED, isopods, springtails, pothos, and a Schefflera.

The Schefflera has been in the enclosure for about 9 months. Since the day I bought it, the leaves have always been somewhat sticky, but over time it has become much more noticeable, and i've noticed it's mostly affecting the top leaves that are the closest to the lamp.

The leaves develop a very sugary, sticky coating that attracts dust and debris and has these brown dots. I assumed it was normal sap and I've been occasionally cleaning it but I've never seen anyone else mention this issue, it builds up so much. When I wipe the leaves with a wet cotton pad, I get brown residue off the surface, sometimes even black, but the leaves underneath look completely healthy and clean but sometimes misshaped which might not be related to this.

The strange thing is that the pland is growing very well, It is dense and constantly putting out new growth, leaves look healthy overall, I can’t find obvious pests on the stems, I don’t see scale insects, mealybugs, or anything moving, my pothos and other plants do not seem affected, the sticky residue has been present for months.

Has anyone seen Schefflera do this naturally in a high-humidity vivarium, or does this sound like a pest issue that I’m somehow missing?

Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated

what weight/size is your garg?

my female (i assume female?) garg is 11 months old and 30 grams! is that the average weight for that age? how large are your fullgrown grags? i've seen some really huge gargoyles at an expo and now i'm wondering if my girl is too small for her age

u/kikiriki240 — 3 months ago

mars!

Her colors are becoming noticeably more red as she ages, so excited to see her fully developed her colors. She's almost a year old now
