how to track with compression?

currently integrating compression into my chain after gain staging.

my current method is using Uad distressor on default mode and playing with the headroom knob to get compression going without messing with the plugin.

i like my compression fast. is that ok tracking or better saved for mixing?

i record vocals. any advice?

thanks homies.

tracking vocals question

is it normal im more comfortable committing to eq while tracking then compression.. ive heard its the opposite for most people.

more things can go wrong with compression IMO.

i dont mix track just influence with eq.

how about you?

Trying to get “high-res” vocals using filters

I understand boosting high end gives crispness, but something about the filters themselves sounds more pleasing to my ears.

I got the idea from the Type-R filter in MixBox (models the classic Roland IR3109 filter chip) and I’ve been experimenting with FabFilter Volcano to get that same high-res / crisp sound (like modern rap vocals), but I’m not sure if I’m using it right or if I should be using a different type of filter altogether.

Right now I’m doing all the basic stuff—removing background noise, hum, etc., EQing, compression, sounds good.

Then with Volcano I’m:

  • Using a high shelf / high cutoff
  • boosting little 3k
  • Keeping it subtle

It kind of works, but im not satisfied with results.

is Volcano a good tool for this?

Appreciate any advice

What is the difference between the Neve 1073 preamp and the Neve 1082 preamp?

I’m trying to understand the actual sonic differences between these two Neve preamps.

  • How do they compare in terms of tone, saturation, warmth, clarity, and character?
  • Is the 1082 basically an upgraded/expanded version of the 1076, or are they completely different flavors?
  • For recording vocals ( modern Creative-hip-hop/rap vocals), which one would you choose and why?

I’m more interested in the preamp sound itself, not just the EQ differences.

Would love to hear from people who have used both hardware or good plugin emulations.

recording vocal with 2 microphones?

I’ve been recording rap vocals and I’m wondering if it’s worth using 2 microphones at the same time instead of just one.

Does it actually improve sound quality or give more options when mixing? Or does it just make things more complicated?

If anyone here has tried it, what are the real benefits (or downsides)? And how do you usually set it up?

one obvious benefit i like with this method is, i dont have to record doubles.

using neumann 102 and sm7b through an apollo twin x

Appreciate any advice.
