51M newbie in

I am 51M, don't have close friends (yet) within running community to ask. Run to strengthen my heart and blood circulation because I got side effects of a medicine on 2024. When my cardiologist didn't object anymore about hard exercise, I knew I had to do something. In process, I enjoy the long run.

I've just running for a less than a year and might be not exposed enough for marathon preparation training. I have found some training plan of xx weeks for people who has hard target. But if no strict timeline, what are your suggestions/recommendations of getting ready for a marathon?

I just reached 10 miles/16 km, still have much to prepare/train.

I try to avoid injury as good as I can, and even tend to postponed my next run / undertrain when I still sore on my calfs, hamstrings, tights. So maybe my questions seems like a lazy person. But please don't hesitate inform harshly if you think I am just overthinking.

As a beginner I am thinking of:

  1. I heard body had limitations on increasing mileage per run. At top only 20 miles / 30 km. For short term I might be targeting HM distance mileage, but after that I am confused how a recreational runner with 20 miles training could do 26 miles / 42 km race? If the answer is long, can someone recommend a reading material?

  2. People started recommend me to do tempo run training. I am thinking to intermitten with my long run. So if this Sunday I do tempo run, next Sunday I do long run. Weekdays are for easy run and cross training. Is this kind of plan too conservative?

  3. Weekly mileage. If I train to worth a HM I aim 30 miles/week, then for FM I aim 45-50 miles/week. Is it in reasonable range?

Please recommend fiction of rag tag team, found family, heist themes

If possible, fun stories, but darker theme is okay too. Thriller, Crime, Fantasy and Science Fiction genres

What I already put on my list:

God Save The Mark by Westlake

Dortmund gang: The Hot Rock , What's Worst Could Happen by Westlake

Kings of The Wyld by James

*Six of Crows* duology

The Lies of Locke Lamorra by Lynch

Slow Horses series by Herron

The Murderbot Diaries

Wayfarers series by Chambers

As you can see, I am seeking a bunch of anti heroes/bad guys vs. stronger enemy.

Any more recommendations?

Aged puerh 1997 - Shui Lan Yin Shen Puer

A generous friend shared his good firtune getting a rare puerh from an auction.

Perfectly aged puerh, 1997 - Shui Lan Yin Shen Puer

Lesson that I learn from the experience:

Shou puerh is an attempt to get the taste of aged Shen puerh.

Of course the aged puerh has delicate taste, nothing excessive. Basically what I wish when I drink shou puerh.

Pace 9:10 /km or 14:45 /mile

After several months of routine jogging, I found my pace for long runs and easy runs are around 9:10 minutes/km or 14:45 mins/mile.

I am building my mileage, planning to get HM distance for my long run. Although that will make me running 3:15 hours.

In competition, I could set pace 7:11 for 10k, 6:28 for 5k. But that could be due to adrenalin, water stations, or fun atmosphere.

In the long term, I want to increase my pace, not for competitive sake, but because running 3 hours are boring and exhausting. Any advice to improve my pace?

Intake when long run

I have only two runs more than 10 km. I heard the water and carbs intake is taking more impact for long run.

For 12-16 km distance, I am thinking to bring two flask of 500 ml of water or pocari sweat. Is it enough, or I am still underestimate the situation?

The gap HR measurement between chest belt vs. smartwatch is mind-blowing for me

I started both device similarly. The I try to capture screen around the same time, around 53th minutes 20th secs.

Belt gives HR 194 meanwhile watch only 114.

I saw once even wider gap, between 204 and 104.

If someone asking me how I felt at that time, I just feel neutral or moderate effort, nothing special.

Please suggest me a running training methods or science

Background, I have read two books: Marathon by Hal Higdon; Chi Running by Danny Dreyer.

Unfortunately both books have similarities, have fillers to make books thicker. I feel the readings are rather boring because too many success stories of the practitioners of each book. The running knowledge content itself is good, but coated with unnecessary soft selling stories.

Please suggest me books that gives you big influence in running techniques, knowledge, or trainings; but don't have much soft selling stuff.

Thank you in advance.

VO2 Max from 20 into 45. I hope my smart watch is not error

My progress since February 2026 to July 2026.

I just noticed VO2 Max measurement on my Amazfit on June 2026.

The I searched internet. VO2 max 20 is very low result at any age. I know I was not in a good shape since I got TBC. Even after cured. at late 2025 I started jogging.

If my watch showed me 50, I may seek proper testing that available in my city.

EDIT: Thanks for the comments especially from u/Legitimate-Ad3237 I found Amazfit has VO2 Max problem.

A beginner runner, asking an ethical issue

I just finished a 10k race. My second race, so still inexperienced. A recreational avarage runner. I want to ask about is there any ethical/rule about elbowing other runners?

Background;

Around km 3 on the race, there were 2 U-turn on the road. The first turn was for 5k runners, then the next turn was for 10k runners. The distance of those U-turns was not far, maybe 100-200 meters.

I was in 10k race within the recreational crowd of 10k runners. Some of elite 5k runners already passed us.

Then after I passed the second U-turn, there was a person that ran in high speed, elbowing other runners to outrun the crowd. From his outfit, he seems an elite runner.

Next is my opinion: this elite is for 5k race. somehow he missed the first U-turn, and turning on second U-turn, but getting panic because on that area, there was no marshall opening for him and he was in the middle of 10k crowd.

Is his elbowing can be accepted in running community? I understand he is an elite, but elbowing runners... I felt negative emotion on that moment.

EDIT: I calculated my split time, assuming the elite was pace 5 or sub 5, indeed an elite 5k passed me around km 3.

Need advice how to utilize his ult effectively

Greetings Pantheon's main players,

I have been adviced to try Pantheon for my jungler/top champ pool. After trying and seeing other players in normal or ARAM matches, I found issues of Panth's ult.

Especially in ARAM with simple battle area, I just need waiting him to arrived at destination point of his ult then cc him.

Any tips or what to check before ult?

I like his basic abilities they are powerful, but I still don't dare to use him in ranked due to his ult.

How to defeat Smolder at the end game?

I never see a complete helplessly Smolder. I triggered to ask here because last night I was in same team with a bad Smolder, and seems useless with 0/2 until mid game, where I as tank support tried to hold died up to 0/12. Smolder build seems weak, no crit, but build like fighter, with trinity force.

Then Smolder got his first kill. Then another and another. Enemy ADC who suppose to be rich in gold could not hold his advantage. My team won. But it made me think, how to keep advantage against Smolder?

My first thought was end game fast, but it needs really fast. First baron must end the game. That's asking too much if other players in smolder's team are decent. For my case, the top and mid were good players.

Any suggestions to stop Smolder?

Usually my HR is 190 at pace 7

Have anyone experience a glitch with the smartwatch?

I share the workout of my training, after run around 30 minutes. I was trying Lactate Threshold Test feature for the first time.

My usual run at pace 7-8 I could hit HR 190. But somehow on that run, the test required me to get HR 140 on warming up, then at 10th minute required me at HR 135-155. But somehow even run at pace 7 then push to pace 6, my HR couldn't hit 130 after minute 10.

After 20th minute, I quit. I am afraid I overtrained, the numbers were too good to be true for me. If I really could stable HR sub 130 at pace 6, I should be participating in HM.

Am I made a good decision to quit? Maybe I will try again the Threshold test but with some preparation if the test is too vigorous. Any advice what should I prepare?

Until what rank I should ban Master Yi?

As title said. I could left game for months and climb rank again. Nowadays i touch many games with diamond players, again but now I feel Dia players cannot handle Yi, rarely players pick a champ with good cc.

I pick good cc champ, but then enemy Yi just feed from other players. Yi got fat, game over. Vice versa if my team got Yi.

I thought Diamond is where I could ban the counter of my champ. But no, Yi is still the priority.

How about Master rank?
